My kids love to play the game Would You Rather. The questions range from, Would You Rather have Wi-Fi that’s always slow, or have a phone that’s always about to die? To questions like, Would You Rather burp every time you speak, or fart every time you kiss someone? A lot of the questions are ones where I’m like NEITHER, but they always force me to pick one.
So I thought, for a fun end to the summer, why not a game of Would You Rather, but Jane Austen style? Some will be fun and easy, and some will be the neither type of question, but too bad, try to answer anyway!
Would You Rather…
…read each of Austen’s works only once more OR only be able to read Pride & Prejudice, but as much as you want?
…be best friends with Mary Crawford OR be wooed by Henry Crawford?
…elope with Wickham OR be dumped by Willoughby?
…be a Bennet sister OR an Elliot sister?
…listen to one of Mr. Collins’ sermons OR one of Mr. Elton’s sermons?
…have Sir Walter Elliot as a father OR Mrs. Bennet as a mother?
…spend a night in Northanger Abbey OR a day in John Thorpe’s open carriage?
…have fine eyes like Elizabeth OR be rich like Emma?
…have Mrs. Bates for an aunt OR Fanny Dashwood as a sister?
…dance with Mr. Tilney at a ball OR read with Colonel Brandon at an intimate gathering?
…attend a concert in Bath OR a party at Netherfield?
…tell a secret to Lucy Steele OR be bossed about by Mrs. Norris?
…accept Edmund Bertram’s proposal OR Edward Ferrars proposal?
…have to listen to Lady Catherine’s advice OR listen to Mary Musgrove complain?
…nurse Tom Bertram back to health OR be nursed back to health by Charlotte Lucas?
…receive Wentworth’s letter OR Darcy’s first proposal?
So, what would you rather? Feel free to answer some (or all) in the comments below or make up your own Would You Rather: Austen edition questions.

So many questions ! Receive Wentworth’s letter again and again…😉😍
SAME!
Never heatd of this game but I will give it a try!
Read P&P!!!
Mary Crawford
Be dumped by Willoughby
Bennet sister!
Mr Collins
Mrs Bennet…this was tough to answer!
Northanger Abbey
Fine eyes
Mrs Bates
Colonel Brandon
Netherfield
Mrs Norris…another no win!
Edward Ferras
Lady Catherine
Charlotte Lucas
Who can resist Captain Wentworth’s letter!!!! But as long as I would get the 2nd proposal from Darcy…Oh Darcy or Wentworth…tough one!!!I can’t choose!Argh…Wentworth!
Madam, I am astounded!
Haha Wickham!
Oh, I do not like questions that are obviously a lose-lose situation. It is worse than being between a rock and a hard place. I don’t think I’ve played this before.
1) read P&P of course
2) Henry Crawford, so I could be done with him.
3) Willoughby, I’d then be in good company and done with him.
4) Elliot sister, it would be quieter
5) Elton, surely he is less winded and condescending
6) tough… Sir Walter… less nervous and always lamenting the entail and pushing for marriage
7) night at the Abbey… my reputation and virtue would be intact… I don’t trust Thorpe even in the light of day
8) tough… fine eyes don’t pay the bills but a fortune draws vermin like rotting meat… I suppose the fortune
9) Mrs. Bates… has a kind heart and I can trust her to not abuse me or throw me out at the slightest provocation
10) another tough one…I do love the good Colonel
11) party at Netherfield… more intimate and less ton society to judge and ridicule
12) grrr.. both are vicious harpies but Aunt Norris… I would still have my secret
13) team Edmund Bertram
14) dang… my ears are bleeding and my patience is set at naught… Lady Catherine’s advice… productive
15) nurse Tom Bertram… who knows…
16) another tough one… Darcy proclaims his love in his proposal… hopefully that won’t be dismissed
Man, I don’t like this game. On some of those A-B choices… I clearly choose C… none of the above. Thanks for the mind blowing headache. I need a nap now and a handful of something to ease my pain. **snicker** this was fun.
LOL! My kids always ask me the toughest, grossest questions and I’m like you- I choose none! I tried to mix it up and put some easy ones in with the hard ones!
I’m going to ride on your coat tails, because I chose the same answers as you did for the same reasons, except for the last. Darcy’s proposal is rather arrogant. I’ve always LOVED Persuasion as equally as P&P, so I’ll vote for Wentworth’s letter. As DH and I were finally married when I was 28, I’ve always had a soft spot for Anne Elliot. At least I was with my man for those 7 1/2 years instead of pining for him. 🙂
What a devious list!
Oooooh, some of these were difficult!!
My answers:
1) only be able to read P&P as many times as I want.
2) be best friends with Mary Crawford.
3) be dumped by Willoghby.
4) This one was hard!! I’d have to go with be a Bennet sister (though I’d love to be a Dashwood sister instead so I could be wooed by Colonel Brandon!).
5) listen to one of Mr. Collins’s sermons.
6) have Mrs. Bennet as a mother.
7) spend a night in Northanger Abbey.
8) have fine eyes like Elizabeth.
9) have Mrs. Bates as an aunt.
10) This one was easy for me: read with Colonel Brandon at an intimate gathering!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
11) attend a party at Netherfield!
12) tell a secret to Lucy Steele.
13) This one was hard because I’d rather choose C: Neither – accept Colonel Brandon’s propsal!
14) have to listen to Lady Catherine’s advice.
15) be nursed back to health by Charlotte Lucas.
16) This one was easy: recieve Wentworth’s letter!
Now, I have a few:
Would You Rather…
…accept Colonel’s Brandon’s proposal or Mr. Darcy’s proposal?
…be a Dashwood sister or a Bennet sister?
…dance with Darcy or dance with Wentworth?
…accept Wickham’s proposal or accept Mr. Collins’s proposal?
“…accept Wickham’s proposal or accept Mr. Collins’s proposal?”
Surely there could be no contest?
I disagree, Mr. Wickham. That is, indeed, a toughie. 😉
You have a keen sense of humour; marvellous!
Oh my goodness, some of those choices are……..unprintable!
1. P&P and could I also have The Lord of the Rings?
2. One of the unprintable ones!
3. Dumped by Willoughby. Who knows what would happen after eloping with Wickham? Abandoned in some seedy inn in London, probably.
4. I’d only want to be either if I could be an Elizabeth. Elizabeth Bennet for her personality and Elizabeth Elliott because she’s the only one Sir Walter has time for. Actually, now I’ve typed that, scratch the Elizabeth Elliott choice. Who’d want Sir Walter as a father?
5. Mr. Elton. I expect Mr. Collins’ sermons would be full of fawning over his ‘noble patroness’.
6. Mrs Bennet – see also the answer to 4.
7. Northanger Abbey. Don’t fancy getting tipped out of Thorpe’s curricle!
8. Fine eyes because…..well….Darcy!
9. Mrs. Bates. She is, despite her faults, kind-hearted. Fanny……isn’t.
10. Read with Colonel Brandon, particularly as my dancing skills make Mr. Collins look like Fred Astaire!
11. Concert in Bath, especially if Captain Wentworth is also attending, as I tend to be a bit Darcy at social gatherings.
12. See answer to 2.
13. A gentleman whose first name begins with E.
14. Listen to Lady C’s advice. I can take it or ignore it as I please. It’d be hard to ignore Mary Musgrove’s constant complaining without committing murder eventually.
15. Nurse Tom Bertram. Who knows how grateful he might be eventually!
16. The letter, every time!
3. Possibly. Or a high old time indeed and tales to tell for a lifetime!
Read each book once and I would not like Wickham or Willoughby niether both men suck lol…I’d rather have fine eyes than be rich like Emma and I’d rather nurse Tom Bertram back to health lol
1. If you’d made the one novel Persuasion, you’d have had a deal. Otherwise, P&P I suppose
2. Wooed by Henry – and laugh.
3 Dumped by Willoughby. There’s always Co. Brandon
4. Bennet sisters have real affection. Easy.
5. Oh the sheer delight of a Collins sermon!
6. Northanger Abbey! Not creepy John…
7.Fine eyes like Elizabeth. Be nothing like Emma, ever.
9. Mrs Bates. One can be polite from a distance.
10. Colonel Brandon, in the person of Alan Rickman.
11. Netherfield Ball
12. Mrs Norris.
13. Oh dear, my own preference would be Ferrars
14. Lady Catherine’s advice would make me laugh internally!
15. Nurse Tom!
16. Wentworth’s letter, wait for Darcy to get it right!
