The Story Behind The Lady of the Thorn
A Regency Romance Rooted in Arthurian Legend
There are certain legends that never truly leave us.
They linger at the edges of the countryside — in thorn trees that bloom when they should not, in rivers that feel older than their banks, in family stories that refuse to settle into mere superstition. I have always been drawn to those kinds of myths. The quiet ones. The ones that feel less like fantasy and more like something misremembered.
The Lady of the Thorn was born from that fascination.
I wanted to write a story where magic did not arrive in spectacle, spells or grand battles. But something older and more rooted — a vow once made, once broken, and now asking to be remembered.
The novel draws its inspiration from the traditions surrounding the Lady of the Lake and from British thorn-tree lore — particularly the idea that certain trees bloom out of season, marking sacred ground or ancient promises. I began to wonder:
What if such a legend had not vanished?
What if it had simply gone quiet?
And what would happen if, generations later, two descendants of that story met without knowing they stood at the edge of its return?
In this book, Elizabeth Bennet is not merely encountering a country estate or an inherited curiosity. She is encountering something bound to the land on which she was born.
Fitzwilliam Darcy, for his part, carries a different inheritance: a family history tied to Sir Bedivere, the knight who once failed to fulfill his duty at the end of Arthur’s reign. That failure echoes forward. And like many inherited burdens, it is easier to ignore than to examine.
The resolution is not about restoring what once was. It is about renewing a vow in a way that honors both truth and choice. Because love, like legacy, is strongest when it is chosen freely.
For Readers Who Love…
If you are drawn to Regency romance layered with folklore…
If you love estates with secrets and families with complicated histories…
If you prefer magic that whispers instead of shouts…
I hope The Lady of the Thorn feels like coming home to a story you did not know you remembered.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Doris!
The truth is, I’m not big on magic in JAFF. But I’m a goner for Arthurian legends, so I’m already hooked!
Author
I’m not either, Isabelle, which is why I call this “Fantasy lite”. It’s not entirely rooted in reality, but we aren’t riding dragons, either. Hope it lives in that middle ground for you!
Sounds amazing!

I love reading stories about Arthur and Merlin. I am so looking forward to reading this book. Thank you for writing a story with such a blend.
Author
Well, sadly you won’t actually see Arthur or Merlin. We went in a little different direction, but Arthur made it possible. <3
What an interesting and different premise. I have done a fair amount of reading of the Arthurian legends, mostly in more modern tellings, that look at the legends from different perspectives but had not thought about connecting them to the Pride and Prejudice story. I look forward to reading how the legends have lasted into the 19th Century.

I had a lot of fun digging through some of the historical stuff we can actually account for. It was certainly a treat to research and write this one!
I’ve always loved myths, folk tales, and legends. This story sounds like it would hit all my wishes and it’s wrapped around P&P characters — the cherry on top. Look forward to the release.

Oh, yay, Gayle! This one doesn’t have any spells or dragons, so some might call it “Fantasy-lite” but it’s definitely deep into the lore category. I hope it tickles your fancy!

Congratulations on your new release! I am not familiar with Arthurian legend, I will have to swot up.
Oh, it’s fascinating, Ceri. Some of it isn’t all that tidy, though.
Congrats on the new release, Alix! (And no need to enter me in the giveaway — just wanted to say congrats on the cool concept and book!)
Thank you, Christina!
Always love your variations. Looking forward to reading this one.
This looks SO GOOD!!!
I love the backstreet you provided here. I am part way into the book and was puzzling the Darcy link – the hint of promises broken had tipped me, wrongly I see, towards violated boundaries over time. It made little sense, but the land (Pemberley and Longbourn) protesting seemed to lead that way.
I am intrigued by Darcy’s pragmatic rejection of what’s in front of him, and Lizzy’s unconscious acceptance of the same peculiarities.
