Kara Louise grew up in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles. In 1991 she moved with her husband and son to Wichita, Kansas, where they lived for over 20 years. In September of 2013, they moved with their dog and 5 cats to the St. Louis area to be near their son and his wife. Four days after they moved there, they found out a baby was on the way and would soon be grandparents. They have three very spoiled and very loved granddaughters, and a few other animals added (and subtracted) from the menagerie.
Kara began writing Pride and Prejudice variations in 2001 and has 12 published novels based on Pride and Prejudice: Assumed Engagement, Assumed Obligation, Master Under Good Regulation, Drive and Determination, Darcy’s Voyage, Only Mr. Darcy Will Do, Pemberley Celebrations, Pirates and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy’s Rival, A Peculiar Engagement, Chance and Circumstance, Mr. Darcy’s Magpie, Encounter to Remember, and Frosted Window Panes.
Here is a sampling of Kara’s novels ~
Only Mr. Darcy Will Do
After her father’s death, Elizabeth Bennet goes to work as a governess. Little does she know the Willstones are social acquaintances of the Bingleys and the Darcys, and Elizabeth finds herself once again drawn into Mr. Darcy’s orbit. To make matters worse, Mrs. Willstone’s sister sets her sights on Mr. Darcy. With Elizabeth’s social status even lower than it was before, she knows she must abandon all hope of Darcy renewing his proposals, even as she begins to see him in a completely different light…
Darcy’s Voyage
In this enchanting and highly original retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet sets out for the new world aboard the grand ship Pemberley’s Promise. She’s prepared for an uneventful voyage until a chance encounter with the handsome, taciturn Mr. Darcy turns her world upside down.
When Elizabeth falls ill, Darcy throws convention overboard in a plan that will bind them to each other more deeply than he ever could have imagined. But the perils of their ocean voyage pale in comparison to the harsh reality of society’s rules that threaten their chance at happiness. When they return to the lavish halls of England, will their love survive?
Pirates and Prejudice
After Elizabeth Bennet refuses Mr. Darcy’s offer of marriage, it takes a heavy toll on him. He withdraws to London and disappears near the docks, away from family, friends, and acquaintances. When he is mistaken for an escaped pirate, he is thrust into an adventure he would never have imagined. Will this be what he needs to forget the one woman he had come to love?
When her aunt and uncle have to cancel their plans to tour the Lake District, Elizabeth Bennet has the opportunity to sail to the Isles of Scilly with her father. After a pleasant visit, the voyage home brings storms, a shipwreck, and pirates! When she is rescued by gallant Captain Smith, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him. What will she do when she discovers he is the very man whose offer of marriage she refused just a few months earlier?
Mr. Darcy’s Rival
Mr.Darcy has learned he must prepare himself when he and his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, make their yearly visit to his aunt, particularly when it comes to Lady Catherine’s expectation that he marry her daughter, Anne. This year, however, will throw in a few additional obstacles to Darcy’s peace of mind with the presence of a nephew on the de Bourgh side of the family, and quite unexpectedly, Miss Elizabeth Bennet. An interrupted proposal, a letter written and unknowingly lost, a harsh accusation, and a rival all conspire to thwart Mr. Darcy in securing Miss Elizabeth Bennet’s affections when he visits his aunt at Rosings. Will Elizabeth find the handsome and engaging Mr. Rickland more suited to her than Mr. Darcy? And will a novel she reads that was written secretly by Miss Anne de Bourgh help smooth the path to the couple finding true love?
A Peculiar Engagement
Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Miss Anne de Bourgh have been promised in marriage to each other since their birth. They have what might be called a peculiar engagement. As per the events in my Pride and Prejudice variation, Mr. Darcy’s Rival, Miss de Bourgh is secretly an author and penned this reflection of stories about their engagement as they grew and matured. What was it like to know that one day they would marry? Did they love one another? Did they want to oblige the particular wishes of their mothers and marry? Did Anne grow weary waiting for an offer of marriage? Included in this novel is a special bonus chapter that explains how Mr. Darcy plays a part in Miss de Bourgh finally getting her true happily ever after.
Chance and Circumstance
Chance brings about an early encounter between Charles Bingley and Elizabeth Bennet soon after his move into Netherfield. He soon begins to favour this pretty and lively young lady. Circumstances have kept Jane Bennet and Mr. Darcy from the neighbourhood, thereby changing the events that Jane Austen penned in “Pride and Prejudice.”
When Mr. Darcy finally arrives, will he be able to keep from interfering when he meets this young lady his friend so greatly admires? When Jane returns from touring the Lake District with her aunt and uncle, will the young gentleman who returns with her prove to be better suited for her than Mr. Bingley ever was?
In this “Pride and Prejudice” variation, chance and circumstance greatly affect the way several of Jane Austen’s characters arrive at their happily ever after, but not necessarily the way you think.
Mr. Darcy’s Magpie
When Elizabeth Bennet is forced to remain at Pemberley due to her uncle’s accident and injuries, she does everything she can to prevent Mr. Darcy from realizing she is there. During those days she is successful in keeping her presence from his notice, she comes to learn more about him, his honorable character, and how well he is regarded by others. How long will she be able to keep her presence a secret from him, and what will happen when he finds out she is there? Mr. Darcy, meanwhile, is curious about the odd incidents taking place that he cannot explain. How will the reason he returned to Pemberley a day early affect him and those he cares about? Is the beautiful, accomplished, and admirable Miss Westerfield someone to whom he has already attached his affections? Does he truly intend to ask for her hand, as everyone believes? And how does the magpie play a role in the events of this story?
Encounter to Remember
One year after Elizabeth Bennet refuses Fitzwilliam Darcy’s offer of marriage, they unexpectedly encounter each other inside a London bookstore. Neither is certain how the other feels, but after a few awkward moments and simple conversation, each realizes something in the other has changed. There are expressions of regret and apologies offered to one another for the things that were said and done that day one year ago.
Mr. Darcy extends an invitation to Elizabeth to join him at his London townhome the following day, along with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner. Both leave the store filled with a sense of renewed hope, anticipation, and excitement. But when Miss Bennet does not show up at his home at the expected hour with no note of explanation, Mr. Darcy begins to doubt all he believed about her character, as well as what actually transpired at the bookstore that day. This novella explores how Darcy and Elizabeth must both discover the truth of what happened that day and what obstacles they must overcome to finally get their happily ever after.
