Small homes and likely even smaller minds. Meryton was every bit as unimpressive as Darcy had always imagined it would be. The undistinguished persons on the street gawked at his carriage as it rolled by, and he fought the urge to snap closed the curtains.
“This seems a pleasant place,” Bingley enthused from beside him. “I daresay Netherfield will be quite agreeable as well, and so near town! It seems we have scarcely set out from London, and here we are!”
“Do not be in too much of a rage to approve of it,” Darcy warned as the carriage slowed. “People are less refined here, and I have myself suffered first-hand from their savagery.”
“Have you?” Bingley gave him a quizzical glance. “How so?”
“Um, no, I mean, not these people, but those like them.”
Bingley may not have believed his hasty demurral but did not demand an explanation. Instead, he grinned, saying, “You have been mysterious about your engagement here.”
Darcy cringed at the word engagement, then spoke tersely to disguise his discomfort. “And mysterious, I shall continue. See there, I think that is Morris come to take you to Netherfield. I should not require more than an hour to complete my task. Shall we meet in that”—he scanned the little town, seeking a suitable tavern for a meal. The only one his eye settled on looked absolutely dreadful, but he supposed it was better than starvation—“place over there?”
“Consider it done,” Bingley replied cheerfully.
“Bingley, pray do give the estate careful consideration. I know you only intend to let the place, but it can still become a headache if—”
“Yes, yes! So you have said the whole way here!” Bingley cried good-naturedly as the door was opened for him. “Do not fear, Darcy, even I cannot lease a house and fall in love with a country girl in the space of an hour.”
Bingley exited then. Darcy watched as his friend hailed the land agent, Mr Morris, who was awaiting him in his own curricle. Bingley clambered aboard, and the two were quickly off.
Bingley was considering Netherfield firstly as a temporary place to entertain his friends and secondly as a more permanent dwelling place. Darcy knew he should have gone with him—Bingley knew nothing of what to look for in either land or a house—but he had more urgent matters to attend to.
The direction he had been given sent him down a deeply rutted, dusty lane. Fortunately, it was scarcely a mile until he entered the village of Longbourn. It was nothing of distinction, either for good or bad; only a house of middling size and common-looking fields being used as fields often were. Darcy had heard the estate brought in only two thousand a year, and though his glance was cursory, he could readily see many improvements—sadly lacking—that would increase that. Lazy stewardship disgusted him, and it was in plain evidence here.
A housekeeper called Hill brought him in and took his coat and hat. “The master awaits you in his study,” she said, and Darcy nodded.
“Take me to him, then.”
She went towards the back of the house, and he followed her, passing a drawing room that must have contained no less than fifty ladies for all the loud chatter he heard. He wondered if one of the squawking voices belonged to Miss Elizabeth. Was there anything worse than a woman with an unbridled tongue? A house like this one would soon send him mad, he was sure of it.
By contrast, Mr Bennet’s study was quiet and peaceful. Darcy immediately understood its location at the back of the house where it overlooked serene fields and was shielded from the clamour of the drawing room. The study was the first thing Darcy saw that met with any approval from him; Mr Bennet had a genuinely impressive library for a country squire in a backwater like this one.
The gentleman himself was a man in his sixth decade who sat comfortably in styles of two decades past. There was something in his countenance which suggested intelligence, and Darcy hoped it would prove true. It would make things much easier if Bennet could see where the advantages were.
The man did not rise from his desk but merely pointed him towards a chair. “Mr Darcy,” he said by way of greeting. “Good to see you, sir. It has been quite a long time.”
“It has,” Darcy owned. “Above three years. Miss Elizabeth is, I believe, one-and-twenty now?”
“No,” Bennet replied, looking surprised. “Elizabeth is just twenty.”
“She is?”
Bennet nodded.
“Ah.” This was a wrinkle and one for which Darcy was not prepared. “I…I had believed she had reached her majority.”
“I am afraid not.” Bennet stood and came round his desk. He took a seat in a worn-looking companion to Darcy’s chair. Darcy noticed a puff of dust which rose as the man settled in. “Does that matter?”
“I had hoped,” said Darcy stiffly, “to appeal directly to the lady herself, as her guardian has been rather intractable on this matter.”
Bennet chuckled wryly. “So I have. But one day, sir, should you be blessed with children of the fairer sex, you may understand my determination. I do not wish to see my Lizzy made unhappy.”
“Nor do I,” said Darcy, although in truth, he did not much care what sources of happiness Miss Elizabeth Bennet might find. He only knew it was not to be with him. “But perhaps you will allow for felicity of a different hue than might have been considered before.”
Darcy opened his valise and removed a folder which contained the papers his solicitor had drawn up. He handed the folder to Bennet, who took it, albeit with a suspicious look in Darcy’s direction.
“What is this?”
Darcy paused a moment, choosing his words carefully. “I am prepared to offer a considerable sum, as you see,” he said, gesturing towards the pages in Bennet’s hands.
“A sum was offered—and refused—three years ago.”
“I am offering it again,” Darcy replied tightly. “But as my desire to be rid of this problem has increased, so has the money offered.”
Bennet’s eyes fell to the pages. For a man whose cravat was frayed at the edges, Bennet did not seem excited by the monies indicated. He began to read, a tight frown his only expression. Long minutes ticked by. It seemed Bennet wished to memorise the words on the page, rather than simply read them.
At last, Darcy spoke. “Surely your daughter will recognise that her prospects will be advanced by having a fortune.”
“My daughter is a woman with a broken engagement. A long-term engagement,” Bennet said, eyeing Darcy over the tops of his spectacles.
“There is no engagement,” Darcy retorted. “I have never offered for her, nor consented to be betrothed to her. In fact, I have only ever laid eyes on her once!”
“It was not the laying-on of your eyes which led to this predicament, was it?” Bennet replied with mild reproof.
Darcy flushed. “Need I remind you that Miss Bennet is not wholly innocent in the matter? She was in a place where no decent lady ought to have been.”
“She had no idea where she was,” Bennet replied. “She was just sixteen, and had not been in town.”
“A lady of just sixteen should not have been unattended at a ball.”
Bennet’s eyes hardened, but the rest of his face did not change. Darcy was reminded that he needed this man’s signature, and so softened his tone. “If accommodation is given for her age,” he said, “then it must be for mine as well. At that time, I had not been much in town myself since leaving university and the death of my father.”
“A folly of youth for you both, then.”

Oh my lands, but this sounds like a delicious story! Darcy at his arrogant best. Looking forward to seeing what happens when he meets Elizabeth again. I agree, the cover is wonderful. I love the colors and that she is standing alone. It seems to hint at the story. Congratulations on publishing a new story.
Author
Thank you!! His meeting with Elizabeth is right around the corner here as she happens to come in and here the two men deciding her fate–and she doesn’t much like it!!!
Your cover is GORGEOUS! Congratulations and best wishes for a wonderful launch.
Author
Thank you much Joy!!
I absolutely adore this cover – and this story! Congratulations on a fabulous reveal Amy!
Author
Thank you!!!
First of all I love the dress on the cover even though Elizabeth looks quite sad! As for Darcy? surely he should meet the twenty year old Elizabeth before deciding to reject her? I do hope Mr Bennet insists on it 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻. In fact I’m praying for early marriage? 🙏. Whatever, I’m already fascinated by this story. Obviously it looks like Darcy may need Saye to save the situation 🥰🥰🥰
Author
Alas, there is only so much photoshop one can perform on the models before they look psychotic haha!
THank you Glynis!
It appears that you have written another goodie for us ODC fans.
Thank you.
Author
Thank you Betty! I hope so!
As soon as I have seen the cover – and not the pink fake one – while on Amazon, I have not even looked attentively but rushed to order the paperback! I knew it would be online as well!
After that was accomplished, I could appreciate the cover …. 🙂
Not so the excerpt – I must say ! Poor Darcy! AGAIN oblivious and at his haughty self and thoughts…. oh well…. I guess I will know soon just how you (and Elizabeth) would torture him….
Congratulations, Amy, in advance 😉
Author
Aren’t you just an angel!!! Thank you– I hope you enjoy!
Lovely cover. Not often we see gray for the colour of a gown. I wonder if there’s some significance there. Anyway, I give Amy. After weeks of teasing I am more than ready to read this one. Compromise? Forced marriage scenario.? Yup, right up my alley. Can’t wait!
Author
Hm, its actually more of a dark teal? Computer monitors can be tricky! If you’ve ever seen the 95 adaptation, it is very much like the color of Charlotte Lucas’s dress for the netherfield ball!
Thank you Marie!
Congrats and beautiful cover! Darcy appears to be in high dudgeon but maybe will change his mind when he re-meets Elizabeth or actually has a conversation with her? Looking foward to seeing how this plays out.
Author
Darcy is FOR SURE in high dudgeon! Its hard to go all into the research but fake “breach of promise” suits were just beginning to be the rage back then. People were sending their daughters to London to try and capture a guy and get money out of him. There was a pair of sisters who built up quite a dowry in the 1820s doing just that!
Thank you Jennifer!
Sounds great as always ans love the cover can’t wait for this one
Author
Thanks Wendy! I hope you snagged an ARC!
Beautiful cover, Amy, for what promises to be a fantastic story! Congratulations!
Author
Well there are few who make covers as nice as yours but I do think James comes close! Thanks Susan!!
Can’t wait!

Thanks so much Lisa!
The cover is gorgeous.

Thank you Bats!!
LOVE THE COVER!!! And this teaser….can’t wait to read it!!!! Thanks Amy 🙂
Author
Thank you Char! I hope the story lives up to the cover!
oo. I love this beginning. Darcy’s thought that there must be at least fifty ladies from the noise level at Longbourn gave me a chuckle too. I’m off to add this to the wishlist 🙂
Author
I love to give a chuckle wherever I can! Send me an email if you’d like a blogger copy–I’d be happy to send you one!
I like the subtle simplicity.
Does the story has strong Elizabeth leanings, despite the fact that Darcy has to rescue her, Or can Darcy not help but become entranced despite himself…!?!
Love the cover and the excerpt, and cannot wait to read it!!!!
Author
Thank you CathE!!
Lovely cover! Oooo a compromise and engagement of long standing. Much anticipation over here! Darcy is a stuck up prig, isn’t he 😆. Pay her off, tsk tsk. Hmmm wonder if Mr. B accepts the money then D and E meet up again and he’s floored by her? I KNOW you’ll have a great twist on this one. Pre-order ✅
Author
Aww thank you Chris!!! Yes its a bit of a twist for ODC but it does end with all happiness!!
Beautiful dress. And love the background. Thinking the women’s face has ambiguous expression from concerned to determined…even aloof is a possibility. Gives great opportunity for range of emotion within the story.
Thank you for this excerpt. It is always entertaining when intelligent characters match wits. Darcy seems to be winning this one. Looking forward to reading more when published.
Author
Concerned to aloof… and I’ll add in a bit of “all done with this BS” haha! Elizabeth for most of the story has been coping with a wrong turn for 3 years and she’s quite fed up!!
Thank you Adelle!
I like the subtle simplicity.

Congratulations, on my way to Amazon now!
Author
Thank you Sam!!
Elizabeth has definitely had to be strong and at the crux of the story is Elizabeth working WITH Darcy to extricate them both from a situation that neither of them wants… until they do of course haha!!
Looks exciting and different, so should be a fascinating read as Darcy grows into his character! Love all your stories.
Author
Thank you so much Cheryl!
Guess what I will be doing on my birthday, reading your new book.
Author
I think it’ll go well with a nice slice of cake!! Happy birthday in advance!
Sounds very exciting and the cover is beautiful! Congratulations on your newest release, Amy.
Author
Thank you Regina!
It’s a beautiful cover and the excerpt has me wanting to read more. Thanks for sharing Amy and congratulations on your latest novel. –Leslie
Author
Many thanks Leslie!
Sounds like a great read as usual Amy❤️
Author
I miss you!!! XOXO
Beautiful dress and cover of an innocent young girl. Can’t wait to read how this issue plays out. Mr. D has run up against Mr. B fighting for his favorite (not yet 21 year old) daughter.
Author
Thank you so much Mary!!! Mr Bennet will definitely annoy everyone in the scene after this one, I have to say haha!
The cover is lovely! Elizabeth seems to be summoning her courage. I wonder at her views on matrimony – now that ‘only the deepest love’ may not be an option. Ooo yes, the men are deciding her fate so no worries… Can’t wait to know what you’ve stirred up!
Author
Elizabeth has for sure given up on love… respectability and getting away from her family will do!!! Thank you Deborah!
Beautiful cover, and OH MY, this teaser has me ready to read!! Darcy, Darcy, Darcy, your pride knows no bounds. Just wait, Elizabeth will put you in your place soon enough. Looking forward to the release!
Author
Me too Lisa! Thanks!!
Nice cover and an intriguing excerpt. Makes one wonder just what happened when it seems to be a compromise. And one that Darcy doesn’t like. Look forward to seeing how this story develops.
Author
Sort of a compromise on steroids! Elizabeth was WAYYYYYYY where she should not have been!
I can’t wait to read this story! I am intrigued by the excerpt and the premise — you certainly got my attention and interest. I hope the book launch is a big success and I will be an eager early reader. Thanks for giving us a preview here.
Author
Thanks so much Catherine!
Lovely cover, thank you for sharing it with us. The question we all want to know – is Saye in this one? 🙂
Author
Not only in it but quite demanded his own story line. The Nay-Sayers (see what I did there haha) might have to skip a few chapters about him and Miss Goddard!
Mr. Darcy seems to have gotten himself in a pickle with a very angry Mr. Bennet. Where are your manners Mr. Darcy? And who the heck do you think you are just because you have money? After all, you get into your pantaloons like Mr. Bennet does, one leg at a time. Since we don’t have any knowledge of what happened when Lizzy was sixteen years of age, I am assuming she was somewhere she shouldn’t have been. I love Mr. Bennets’ lack of greed and his fatherly protectiveness, but I am looking forward to learning what happened. Why does Darcy want to buy out of an engagement? Where was Lizzy without a chaperone? The cover does not reveal anything. I will be grateful to have this book added to my e-book library (if I win).
Author
I hope you win Christa and hope you enjoy it! The cover does show Bath which is where most of the book takes place– I got tired of the usual haunts and it was fun to research something semi-new for once!
Interesting twist!
Lovely cover, congrats on the release!
Must. Have. More.
Please tell me it’s coming to Audible!
I immediately thought of Charlotte ’95 when I saw that dress. Elizabeth looks like someone with a lot on her mind.
This is an interesting start, with Darcy’s less favorable traits on display in a new way and a potential foil in an older Mr. Bennet. I look forward to reading D&E’s story (as well as Saye’s)!
Already engaged!! Darcy and Lizzy, and none of them seemed happy about it…
Oh Oh Oh…
How many difficulties and obstacles must there be for them to tackle down.
My best wishes for both of them.
Oh Oh Oh…
I’m all agog to know what happened in their past (!) and how it will be resolved. Happily, I’m sure, with much delicious angst and moving interludes along the way. The cover only adds to the suspense and excitement. Well done! Looking forward to the read.🥰
Beautiful cover & added it to my wishlist.
Love the cover!!! Congratulations! I really like how the font curls around her, as if she is being caught in a tangled web of the follies of her youth! Very telling.
I guess I am not the only one whose computer’s color resolution is not quite accurate. I could have sworn her dress was gray and I was already thinking – half mourning. What??? Now that I know better I can let my mind wander after reading your intro snippet. Yes, of course Darcy is being Darcy. Why would anyone think otherwise unless he is acting OC. Yes, Amy, this will go on my TBR list, which with all the new publications this month, is getting longer and longer. I have to ask you…. have you given any thought to giving Saye his own story, with Miss Goddard , and ODC and others we know so well only “cameo” appearances here and there throughout the story? I though you had about married him off in “A Match Made at Matlock”. We love Saye so much, he deserves his own story!!!
Great cover! I can’t wait to read after the teaser. I agree Saye needs his own story!!
Cover is beautiful love a mysterious cover.
Tale sounds intriguing.
My favourite book of yours is Best part of love.
So this was no brainer for pre order a while back as soon as I heard it was coming.
Looking forward to it.
“even I cannot lease a house and fall in love with a country girl in the space of an hour.” Bingley is hilarious, haha! I can’t wait to see how this turns out! I always enjoy your stories. 🙂
Lovely cover and story.
Thank you.
Oh, this sounds like another great book? I wonder if Elizabeth is aware of her “engagement” and how she feels about it. I see potential for a lot of misunderstandings and bad feelings until Darcy realizes that marriage to Elizabeth might not be such a bad thing.
Very elegant cover. I like the colors and detail. So glad you have another book out!
Great excerpt! I’m really intrigued. What could have happened to Elizabeth? Love the cover too. Good luck with the release.
Love D’Orazio tomes. Looking forward to May 8!
