Congratulations to the 4 winners of the giveaway! They are:
Linda A (Pemberley’s Promise paperback); Wendy Luther (Something Like Regret paperback);
Anna (Pemberley’s Promise Kindle); and Jan DeVries (Something Like Regret Kindle).
I will be contacting each of you some time this week!
Greetings to you all! It has been a while since I have posted here, except for the few P&P Behind the Scenes I contributed that were posted the last couple years. I have a bit of news I wanted to share, as well as what I’ve been going through the past couple of months.
This past March, severe storms were forecasted for Friday night. For almost the full week before, it was a dire forecast. I was supposed to watch my three granddaughters early Saturday morning, and so I decided to spend the night at their house so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting out. We live on a rural dead-end street with lots of old trees, so in any storm, we can have limbs, branches, or whole trees fall on the road. I didn’t want to get stuck.
The storms were severe, and while at our kids’ house, we all sat in an interior room of their basement watching a Disney movie. Little did I know that as the worst of the storm hit, a tornado was going through my own neighborhood. My husband was apparently rushing down the stairs to our basement when he heard the sound of a train, as people claim they hear when a tornado passes through. It was 10:00 at night, and the power went out, so once it was all over, he couldn’t see a thing.
I couldn’t get home until afternoon the next day because of all the trees down on our road. Fortunately, a neighbor had contacted a tree company the night before, and they had a crew there in the morning clearing the road.
We live at the end of the road and have a circular driveway, which was completely blocked with trees all the way around it. Fortunately, one of the tree crews finished clearing our neighbor’s driveway and then came over and cleared one side of our driveway so we could at least pull in and out. Our road also eventually got cleared enough to drive in and out.
Fortunately, our house suffered only minor damage. There were no windows broken, but we did have some damage to our back deck, 2 outdoor sheds were crushed by trees, and our roof and some of the siding were damaged. We got a brand new “Tough Shed” to replace our 2 sheds, and a new roof. Insurance also paid for a lot of the cleanup from the trees (at least 16 fell or mostly fell). Right now, the only evidence that we were hit by a tornado (on our property) are the many stacks of wood we have around the house. Our street, however, is still quite a mess, but I am grateful!
There were also several power poles down, as well, so we figured it would be quite a while before power was restored. I decided, while we were without power and internet, to pull out my books and re-read them. Now a confession! I have a difficult time reading my books once they are published. I either see things I wish I could change or find little mistakes that make me cringe. But I decided to go ahead and do it. I finished six of them, and I have to say, I enjoyed it!
In the midst of all this, I was able to get the rights back to my two books which were published by Sourcebooks Publications. I had originally self-published Pemberley’s Promise in 2006 (three years after writing it and posting it online) and Something Like Regret in 2010. They were picked up by Sourcebooks and published as Darcy’s Voyage in 2010 and Only Mr. Darcy Will Do in 2011. Unfortunately, these two paperbacks were recently put out of print, although they had still been available on kindle.
But I am excited to say that I have re-published both books, back with their original titles, but with new covers and a few changes that I have made. And the best news of all is that they are much more affordable!
In case you aren’t familiar with these two books or need a reminder, here are the blurbs for each of the books:

Pemberley’s Promise: Pemberley’s Promise – the name of the ship holds
promise for those in its confines. When Elizabeth Bennet encounters Mr. Darcy on a voyage to America, their story, known by all in the Jane Austen novel, “Pride and Prejudice,” is significantly altered. When Elizabeth becomes ill down in steerage, and her condition worsens, Mr. Darcy makes a very unexpected offer to assist in her healing. When they later return to England, albeit separately, that offer he made will change the course of their lives and become woven into the events found in Jane Austen’s original novel, with several differences, however, that were affected by it.
Something Like Regret: Mrs. Bennet’s greatest fear comes to pass with the death of Mr. Bennet in the early summer after Elizabeth returns from Kent. Longbourn is entailed away to Mr. Collins. Elizabeth and Jane become governesses in London; their mother and sisters move in with Mr. and Mrs. Phillips in Meryton. Elizabeth could not be happier with the family for whom she works, but soon comes to discover that they have a long-standing association with the Darcys. As she is thrown into his presence and walks the beautiful halls of Pemberley, she comes to a greater understanding of his goodness and admirable character while comprehending the even greater disparity in their stations.
When the books went live last week, I was excited to see that the original reviews for my self-published books had transferred over to these newly self-published books.
If you have read either of the books, do you have a favorite scene you remember without giving too much away. Here are mine: In Pemberley’s Promise it is when Jane innocently tells everyone at Netherfield about Elizabeth’s secret crush on Mr. Wright. In Something Like Regret it is when Elizabeth and Darcy play chess. Oh, and when he saves the cat. What are yours?
I’m giving away two paperbacks (to a US mailing address only) and two Kindle digital copies that I will email to your kindle (worldwide), one book per winner. To enter, let me know your format preference (paperback if you’re in the US, or Kindle anywhere) and which book you’d like. Or you can let me know if you are open to any option. I would love to win Pemberley Promise. I’m in the US and I’m open to either option or really either book.
Woow I would love to win either book soo exciting
Thanks! Good luck on the giveaway, Wendy!
Thanks, Brenda! Good luck in the giveaway!
I first found Darcy’s Voyage in a bookstore and to say it got me hooked on P&P fandom is an understatement! What a totally awesome story! After that I looked for every Kara Louise story that I could find and thus found online JAFF. So thank you for starting me on this wonderful journey and a hobby that I happily follow to this day. If I were lucky enough to win this give away, I would choose the updated paperback of Pemberley’s Promise, but would also cherish either book in either format. (I’m in the US)
Thank you for sharing your stories with us over the years. You have a true gift for writing. I must also say that reading of your recent trials makes me incredibly sad.
Thanks for sharing your story, Jeanette! I’ll enter you in the giveaway!
I would love either of these books in US ebook for Kindle. I am thankful you didn’t have too much damage, and definitely that no one was hurt. I look forward to reading your writing again!
Thanks, Rebecca! We were very fortunate that we were probably on the outer edge of the tornado. Some of the houses on our block weren’t as fortunate. Good luck in the giveaway!
Pemberley’s Promise has long been one of my favorite P&P variations. My favorite part is when Elizabeth first see him in the drawing room and starts to call him William before she catches herself. I own both books in paperback and they have been on my bookshelf since 2009! (According to Amazon-that is when they say I purchased them.) They are both well written and enjoyable and I prefer to re-read these than some of the newer variations out there. I would love a Kindle copy of Pemberley’s Promise. I purchased the paperback long before I could afford a Kindle.
Thanks for sharing your favorite scene! I love that one, too! I’ll enter you in the giveaway for the kindle of PP!
I would love to win a Kindle copy of Something Like Regret! I’m so sorry about your tornado experience! 😟 St Louis has been hit hard this year.
Yes! St. Louis has had several tornadoes! I will enter you for the kindle of SLR! Good luck!
Hi Kara Louise, SO glad you all weathered the storm! I got goose bumps reading about your husband running downstairs when he heard what sounded like a train. That must have been terrifying!
I have read and loved Pemberley Promise but I don’t think I knew about Something like Regret, I would love to be entered to win a print copy please. I’m in the U. S. Thanks for this and good luck to all!
Thanks for your kind words, Kaidi! I will enter you for the print of SLR.
I read and reviewed both of these stories (both rated 5 stars from me) under the first names.
Thanks, Sheila! I appreciate your reviews!
I would love to win either book in digital format. Regardless of which one I win should I be so fortunate, I will be reading both books. Thank you.
Thanks, Susan! I will enter you into the drawing for either of the books!
I have read Darcy’s Voyage/Pemberley’s Promise more times than I can count. I love it. It remains out of hundreds of JAFF in my top 5 favorites.
I would love to be notified of any of your new releases.
Diane Clements
P.S. I am so glad that you and your husband arrived safely on the other side of the tornado. I once upon a time lived in what was known as
Tornado Alley. Scary!!
Thanks, Diane, for your kind words. We’ve lived in both Kansas and now St. Louis since 1991 when we moved from Los Angeles. So we went from earthquakes to tornadoes. I do prefer a tornado over an earthquake, but they’re still scary!
I’m okay with both books in either format. I haven’t read either of these. Yet! Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
Thanks, Linda! I will enter you for any of them and if you win, I hope you will enjoy them!
We went through a storm a couple of years ago, in the beginning it seems like it will take forever to get back to normal, but eventually everything gets fixed, hauled off or cut up and cleared.
I would like a kindle version of either book.
Yes, we are anticipating things getting back to normal. I will enter you in the giveaway for a kindle. Good luck!
Hi again, Anna! I just wanted to make sure you knew you won the digital copy of Pemberley’s Promise, and I have sent you 2 emails, but have not heard back. Please check your junk or spam folder in case they went there. The subject matter is Pemberley’s Promise. (I had sent them under 2 different email addresses.) Thanks!

I would like a kindle version of either book. I have yet to read either book.
I’d prefer paperback of either book, but I won’t say no to a digital copy either! 🤭
OK! I’ll enter you in either! Thanks!
I am glad your husband is safe! That must have been terrifying! You sound like you have a positive attitude and great neighbors. I am happy that you are digging out!
Thanks, Audrey! We have 4 couples at the end of our block who get together frequently to share all our woes, frustrations, and successes. You didn’t say anything about being entered in the giveaway, so if you would like to be entered, just pop in here and let me know. Thanks!
Oh, Kara! I am so glad you and your family came through the destruction with little damage. What a scary thing! I hope the rest of your community recovers fully soon.
I own both Darcy’s Voyage/now PP and Only Mr. Darcy Will Do/now SLR in paperback and Kindle. I also own everything else you’ve written in one or the other format, but these two are my favorites!
SLR favorite scene…too many great scenes, but the storm and how Elizabeth and Darcy bonded over service/duty to others (and Misty’s rescue) is one of my favorites.
PP favorite scene…when Elizabeth finds the sampler at Pemberley and confirms who he is.
Anytime a friend (or even someone online) asks me about a good romantic read, I recommend both. It’s not often a novel makes me put my hand over my heart with emotion every time I read it, but both of these do. I am SO glad you are re-releasing them! Hopefully others can now discover these STELLAR books.
I don’t really need one of the books for myself, but a paperback version of either book would be neat so I can share it the next time a friend asks me for a recommendation.
Thanks for all you do, Kara! Maybe we’ll see something new from you soon?
Thanks, Kristina! I really appreciate your kind words (and for sharing your favorite scenes!) I will enter you in the giveaway for either paperback. Thanks again!
I am glad to hear that all is getting back to order for you after the storm. As for your books, I cannot say that I have read either, but I would certainly enjoy reading both of them. My preference is to have a paperback to read and I would be happy to have either of your books.
Thanks so much!
Thanks, Laura! I would love to enter you in the giveaway so you can have a chance to read them. And if you win (or if you end up having to buy either one), I hope you will enjoy them!
Congrats on getting the rights back and on the new release. Would love either format.
Thanks, DarcyBennett! I will certainly enter you in the giveaway for either book in either format! Good luck!
Dear Kara, so sorry about the storms and all the havoc they caused for you and yours, but so glad for the silver lining of you revisiting your books! (I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to read one’s own writing. When I’ve put out a book, I don’t want to look at it again, for exactly the reasons you mentioned.)
Congratulations on acquiring the rights and republishing two of your books! (No need to enter me into the giveaway, as I’ll make sure to pick these up on my own.)
Thanks, Christina! I’m glad I’m not the only author who struggles with this! I think part of the problem is having read it so many times in writing and editing it! 😆
I’d love either one, in either format! I’m going to be looking these up…very exciting for you!
Thanks, Katy! I will be entering you in the giveaway! Good luck!
I’m very sorry that you had such a hard time, but I’m glad the damage isn’t worse.
I like Only Mr Darcy will do/Something Like Regret very much, but Darcy’s Voyage/Pemberley’s Promise is one of my alltime favorites. I’ve re-read it several times, which is very unusual for me.
Above all, I like how protective Darcy is and the agony ODC feels towards the end. A little angst makes the happily ever after so much better.
Please don’t enter me in the giveaway, because I already own both books.
Thanks for your very kind words, Sabrina. I’m so glad you enjoyed the books!
Hi Kara,
What a terrible experience with the tornadoes and outages, and I’m glad you and your hubby were safe.
We had similar experiences here this spring although ours happened during church services on Sunday. We were sheltered in the church basement, but we were eager to get home to make sure our fur baby was okay (She is a rescue dog and has separation anxiety issues). We were worried that the high winds and crashing branches would really scare her. Luckily, she went to our lower level and curled up in my daughter’s room where she sleeps at night. But she was safe and happy to see us when we got home.
I would love a Kindle copy of Pemberley’s Promise if my name is picked. It sounds very interesting!
Thanks! It is indeed scary! Glad your little baby had gone downstairs in case anything did happen! We had a dog who hated thunderstorms (ad fireworks), and fortunately learmed to go down to the basement and hunker down under the stairs. I will enter you in the giveaway. Good luck!
Glad you are all ok. I love paperback but open to whichever is available.
Thank you, Glory! Good luck in the giveaway!
Congratulations to all the drawing winners!
