Friends, it’s my pleasure to tell you that the name of Wickham shall feature not once but twice at the Bath Jane Austen Festival in September. Firstly, my erstwhile editor, Catherine Curzon, shall be giving a talk on a scandalous lady and all matters militia. Later in the Festival she will be joined by Mr Adrian Lukis, whose name is synonymous with my own, to discuss theatre, Austen and no doubt one or two other things as well.
The fragrant Mrs Wickham shall be delighted that I am still a topic of conversation in that most delightful city!
Mr Wickham and Mrs Clarke: 17th September 2018, 12:15 pm-1:15 pm
This talk will delve into the militia in Jane Austen’s era and lift the lid on the scandal of Mary Anne Clarke, the mistress of the Duke of York and a woman who sold commissions at mate’s rates to her favourite gentlemen. Mary Anne ruined a reputation and left the royal family reeling. It’s a story that any budding Mr Wickhams would do well to learn from.
Book tickets here.
In Conversation with Adrian Lukis: 21st September, 12.30-m-1.30pm
Join Adrian Lukis, perhaps better known as Pride and Prejudice’s dashing Mr Wickham, in conversation with author, Catherine Curzon. Familiar to viewers from Pemberley to Downton and beyond, Adrian will recall his experience filming the iconic BBC adaptation, as well his long and varied career on stage and screen.

sounds delightful!
I hope it shall be!
Wow… what fun. That is a Festival that I would like to see.
I read somewhere about actors that hate the movie franchise and the character that made them famous/iconic. It is a double-edged sword. I wonder if Lukis is one of those? Does he regret having participated in the BBC movie? Has it hurt his career or enhanced it? Just wondering out loud. Thanks for this post. It will give me something to look forward to in September.
I can’t wait, it’s always lovely to chat to Adrian so to be able to do it on a professional basis is the icing on the cake.
Adrian certainly doesn’t regret being part of P&P, quite the opposite, and he loves meeting the fans and enthusiasts. He has some wonderful memories of filming and we’ll be sharing them this September!
Jeanne, I was present at the event in the photo above (I think I even took that photo) and Adrian was definitely NOT regretting his role in the 1995 production when he and Catherine were chatting on stage and in the Q & A afterwards. I even got to ask him a question myself!
Will ‘Mr. Wickham’ be wearing his ‘redcoat’? With all the lovely ladies attending, I wonder if ‘Mrs. Wickham’ will be in attendance too? Unfortunately, I will have to tender my regrets…I will be unable to attend…sigh. And to think I will miss both you and Miss Curzon…sigh.
Mr Lukis shall be wearing the garb of a modern sort of gent and I shall be a keeping a keen eye on the fragrant Mrs Wickham, would that you could be there!
Wish I could be there. I am sure it will be wonderful.
Lovely to see that photo from the Huddersfield Literary Festival last year. – brings back happy memories of a wet Sunday afternoon in March 2017. Comparing it with the one that’s still on my phone, I suspect I was on the other side of lens on that occasion and it was one of the ones I posted on FB afterwards. It was great to meet you both, however briefly. Wish I could make it to Bath this year but I think that the plans I had are going to be scuppered by some unexpected building repairs at home.
I thought that one was taken by a friend of mine or I would have sought your permission to use it – so sorry, do let me know if you’d rather I didn’t! It was lovely to meet you and would be lovely to see you again, curse those building repairs.
I don’t have a problem with you using the photo, Catherine. Even though I do say it myself, I think it’s a pretty good one of the pair of you!
Thank you, I love the photo!
One day!
