Jane in January: Daydreams and a Prologue

Where does our inspiration come from? Such an intriguing theme to start the New Year with! I loved the previous posts and I’m looking forward to the ones to follow. I hope you’ll enjoy them all and thanks for joining me today to chat about the things, big and small, that inspire me in my writing.

Every happy hour spent daydreaming or typing is of course owed to the wonderful lady who keeps giving us so much joy two hundred years on. Her works are the major source of inspiration: a scene, a dialogue, a rather secretive character, a path not followed which tempts the imagination towards a tantalising what if…?

In my case, once the main idea of a new ‘what if…?’ had started to take shape, all sorts of little things come to add to it: the adaptations I love or a country house I visited or a great landscape or a deeply moving song.

Some scenes in From This Day Forward and The Unthinkable Triangle were inspired by music: an aria performed at Basildon Park and a very poignant piece played on the harp at the Jane Austen Festival in Bath. Other scenes from The Unthinkable Triangle sprang from an inscription on the bench where I often go to write, from a lovely gift of a scented candle, from glimpses of garden follies, orangeries, woodland walks and the houses we know as Pemberley. And if the garden folly seemed to belong to a different era but I loved the setting, there’s always the good old cut & paste: take one garden folly from the south of England, enlarge it, flip the image, paste it in the northern location and hey presto, here’s a garden folly, perfect for secret assignations.

Beautiful Cornwall had inspired much of The Falmouth Connection: paths through dark woods seemingly fraught with danger; a Great Hall with its display of ornamented shields and blades that might come in handy in an impromptu duel; romantic beaches that might have formed the backdrop for Mr Darcy’s proposals or an overgrown garden where our favourite characters might have come across each other and exchanged a few confusing words and a fair number of feverish kisses.

Scenes in Miss Darcy’s Companion were inspired by a great house decorated for Christmas, a Regency game I saw my friends play, an exquisite music room and a poignant aria about sentiments that could not be openly expressed, but would be discerned in sparkling eyes if one were to look closely.

The Subsequent Proposal and The Second Chance had something to do with a rose that changes colour as it opens, a watercolour painted by my husband’s grandfather and especially with the feeling that Jane Austen’s characters seem so real that I can almost believe they lived and breathed and moved through the Regency salons – in which case the Miss Bennets, the Miss Dashwoods and Miss Anne Elliot might well have crossed paths with Mr Darcy and his sister.

Mr Bennet’s Dutiful Daughter came to be because I really wanted to write an early-marriage scenario where both Elizabeth and Mr Darcy are vulnerable in their different ways. She – because the risk of losing her father’s protection compels her to marry without love for her family’s sake. He – because he comes to the marriage with no post-Hunsford epiphany and thinking himself loved, only to see his world collapse and his illusions shattered when he discovers she had given herself to him out of nothing more than duty.

My latest book, The Darcy Legacy, was inspired by the wish that Mr Darcy did not have to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders and had a father figure to guide him along. As it happens, he gets to have two.  And there’s always a certain flamboyant cousin who never minces his words.

As for my current WIPs, they take turns in prodding me and asking to be written. The one that pokes & prods most insistently was inspired by dark clouds threatening to bring a pretty heavy storm. So here I am, back to my old habits of raining trouble on Mr Darcy in more ways than one 😉.

I’m still in several minds about the title so I won’t share it yet, and it’s a long way till The End, but this is how it starts:

PROLOGUE

“Steady on, lad,” Darcy muttered, wishing he were atop one of his own trusted mounts instead of his uncle’s skittish thoroughbred who bridled and snorted, unsettled by the fog. Not fog as such, but low-lying clouds descending from the hilltops into the steep valley.

Darcy tightened the reins. They felt slick in his grasp, dampened like everything else by the fine spray blowing in the air, part mist, part light drizzle. He could see very little of the road ahead. Still, the stone walls that bordered it were of some assistance in the matter. Yet the stallion seemed of a different mind about the road or the tightened reins or both. He tossed up his head again and stamped a forehoof in protest.

“There, now,” Darcy sought to soothe him.

Diffuse light flickered in the grey skies, followed by the steady rumble of a distant roll of thunder. Darcy grimaced. So, he would have his promised wet ride after all.

Rain caught up with him sooner than expected. What had begun as a gentle patter turned swiftly into a downpour. Lightning flashed again and again and the rumble of thunder grew increasingly louder. Bowing his head into the slanting rain and into the wind that threatened to make away with his hat, Darcy felt compelled to own that the innkeeper might have had the right of it: he would have been wiser to take lodgings with the old fellow for the night.

No sooner had he negotiated the sharp bend in the road than the brightest fork of lightning split the skies, startling both horse and rider. With a high-pitched neigh of terror, the stallion shied and reared up, fell back on his fours shuddering uncontrollably, bucked, then reared up again. The rider’s fast reflexes were not enough to keep him in the saddle. The wet reins slipped from his grasp and he was thrown off for the first time in upwards of eleven years. He caught the top of the stone wall as he fell, hit the ground with a groan, then remained motionless and silent. The stallion still snorted and shook, pounding his hooves, then gave yet another shrill neigh and, of his own accord, made an about-turn to clatter apace uphill along the track, back towards the country inn and the remembered sights and scents he had long come to associate with comfort and safety.

Mercilessly whipped by the cold deluge that kept falling from the skies, the stallion galloped as fast as his feet would carry him – further and further away from the dark valley, from the dreaded spot where the hair-raising flash had struck, and from the dreadfully unnerving inert shape that lay prostrate in the pouring rain. Thank you for the excerpt (thanks also for telling us that no character is seriously harmed. It would be disheartening if a dear character acquired a severe injury).

Such wonderful collection of P & P stories, it will hard for the winner to choose from any one.thank you for being so generous.

Thank you for the excerpt and the wonderful pictures, especially Osterley Park. I’m glad Mr. Darcy isn’t critically injured, but I imagine he will be quite bruised and sore once he wakes up. I have to wonder how urgent his business may have been for him to ignore the innkeeper’s advice to push on despite the warning. An intriguing beginning.

So glad you liked the pictures, Florence. Osterley Park looks great at Christmas and because the style is very Regency it feels so right for the period. Glimpses of Pemberley all round. Lovely.

Oh no, he can’t be critically injured, it’s *Mr Darcy*!!

“I imagine he will be quite bruised and sore once he wakes up” – I think so too. And in need of a fair amount of TLC, I expect 😉

Hi Glynis! Not sure yet when it will be published, it’s still quite a long way from The End.

Glad the PS was useful 😉 . Oh, yes, help is coming pretty sharpish, no worries.

“I also hope you don’t torture him too much in this story (or any other) although I suppose that is a forlorn hope 🙂 ” Ooops, sorry about that :)). I must admit it doesn’t look like plain sailing from where I’m sitting, not this time. TDL was an easier ride. But I don’t think this one’s going to be on the par with ‘Mr B’s Dutiful Daughter’ or ‘The Unthinkable Triangle’ either. Hope you won’t have to feel sorry for him for a very long time, and that the sunny days will make up for the hard times for our favourite fictional gent from Derbyshire.

Huge thanks for your wonderful support and see you again soon at Pemberley, fingers crossed!

While our weather is not as bad as Darcy’s today, it is gray and gloomy. Your newest book sounds very tempting!!!

I, too, love all your books and am excited to know you are working on another one. The excerpt is a cliffhanger. We do know that Darcy will survive. I am sure that when the horse shows up at the inn some there will look for him but I imagine rescue is coming sooner on the roadside. I look forward to reading more. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year, all.

Oh, he has to survive!!! What’s JAFF without Mr Darcy? It doesn’t bear thinking. Thanks for reading the prologue, Sheila, I’m so glad it caught your eye 😉 and huge thanks for your wonderful support. Have a very happy New Year and lots of joy coming your way.

Ah, mist and drizzle. In The Falmouth Connection, they’d be calling it ‘mizzle’, wouldn’t they? Although I’ve loved all of your books Joana, I stiil have a very soft spot for ‘the garden scene’ in that particular book and still, even now, my insides melt into a puddle of goo just thinking about it.

Thanks for sharing this tantalising excerpt with us. Would I be anywhere near the answer if I suggested that a certain lady with ‘fine eyes’ might be the one to come along and find the unconscious Darcy? Or, given that he’s riding one of his uncle’s horses, is he in Derbyshire? Probably neither of these scenarios is right but I’m sure we’re in for another treat!

Thanks ever so much for the kind words about my books, Anji! I’m so happy you loved them and that the garden scene in The Falmouth Connection stayed with you. I’m sure it won’t come as a huge surprise that a certain lady with fine eyes can’t be that far from the unconscious Darcy 😉 . Hope you’ll like this ‘what if’ too. Have a very happy New Year and here’s to us meeting face to face at last. Best wishes and thanks again!

Late to all the parties per usual! Love, love, love this post and your inspiration and had never heard the story of the Rose changing color as it opens but what a beautiful analogy and so perfectly executed by your stories. Love the excerpt. As others have said, I’m on pins and needles and need more to happen soooooon. ❤️❤️❤️

Goodness, Jami, don’t worry about it! ‘Late to all the parties’ is my middle name. That, and ‘tweaking till the cows come home’ and ‘procrastination’ (I have a veeery long name 😀 ).

I’m so glad you love the post!! I’ve got to show you the rose someday. Fingers crossed for you coming back to the UK in the summer. Actually, never mind, come whenever. Photos will do if it’s the wrong time of the year for roses. This one is quite unusual, I’ve never seen anything like it. But when I posted photos on FB it turned out that Ceri Jane has just one like it in her garden. Sadly, neither of us know what variety it is. The bud is very small, wrinkly, yellow and nothing to write home about, but as it opens the petals turn a fabulous fire-red. Thought it was a nice metaphor for a certain gent’s change of heart from jealousy to fire-red passion 😉 . Sorry about the pins & needles, I’ll try to get on with it already. Thanks, hugs and have a good week!

I really like to look at the pictures and imagine what it is like to visit all the beautiful sights in England which I plan to tour one day. And the excerpt is intriguing as well. Thank you for sharing the prologue for you new book. It has caught me in suspense: Where was Darcy going and why? Why could he not wait for better weather for his ride? How long before help arrives? And many more. I am interested in reading the rest of this story for sure. Thanks for the chance to win one of your books, too.
