A Matter of Prudence Cover Reveal & Excerpt

Happy Tuesday!

Last month, I told you about, A Matter of Prudence, my soon-to-be released new novel. It has its official launch on 7 August (not quite six weeks away!), and features something new for me—an Elizabeth and Darcy who are attracted to each other right from the beginning. There might be one or two other fun plots. (I think they’re fun, at least—haha.) You can read the first post here.

Today, I am back to to share the cover and another excerpt. Be sure to comment on this post for a chance to win a free e-book of A Matter of Prudence. Quills & Quartos will be awarding three prizes.

First, the cover. It was designed by Josephine Blake at Covers & Cupcakes. (Side comment: Isn’t that a great name?) When I first saw it, there were two things that immediately jumped out at me and that make it wonderful for A Matter of Prudence. The first are the autumnal colours, since the story does start in the autumn, and Elizabeth Bennet is particularly fond of long walks; she is bound to enjoy the changing colours of the leaves. The second is that the woman in it (Elizabeth, of course) looks strong and confident, and I would say that this Elizabeth is. I’m going to add a third thing that jumped out ant me—how absolutely gorgeous her dress is. I could just see Mrs Darcy wearing it to an elegant event in town, her proud husband introducing her to all his acquaintances.

Here it is! Let me know what you think in the comments.

On to the excerpt! Last time we met Bingley, and this time, we meet his sister. Enjoy!

Chapter 2

Caroline Bingley, age twenty and, by her own estimation, a very pretty, well-dressed lady, paced the bright drawing room, checking the mantel clock every few minutes, certain a greater interval had elapsed since the last time she had looked at the instrument.

“How long can it take?” she muttered, even though no one was there to hear her. “If Charles decided to go to his club or some such thing, I will strangle him! Perhaps he remains with Mr Darcy. If so, I shall not complain. Whatever we must do—”

The sound of people at the front door made her eyes fly to the room’s entrance. She stood still, listening carefully for clues as to whether it was her brother, or if someone had dared to call at such an inconvenient time. Footsteps approached the door, it slowly opened, and—

“Charles!” Caroline impatiently waved the butler away and pulled her brother to a seat. “Well?”

His grin was full of satisfaction. “He will come.”

“Oh, that is wonderful!” She let out a heavy breath in a rush. “Tell me everything.”

“There is not much to say. I told him I took Netherfield and said I needed his advice. I do not, thank you very much, but you know Darcy.”

“He likes to feel useful,” she agreed, her eyes flickering upwards. While she did like the man, he could have an inflated sense of his own knowledge in comparison to others.

“That is a charitable way to view it. I hope this works. I only took the place so you could keep house for me, and he could observe how good a mistress you are.”

Caroline rested a hand on his arm. “Papa wanted you to purchase an estate. It is earlier than you planned to do it, but…”

Bingley made a noise that conferred agreement. “I would never purchase a house in such an unfashionable neighbourhood, but it will not be so bad. It is just a lease, and Netherfield Park is close to town. I told him Louisa and Hurst would join us sometime in October and we would invite friends. He believed me—why would he not?—and I think that convinced him to accept. He is fastidious enough to find it a little odd to stay with just the two of us.”

“It will be easy to excuse Louisa and Hurst’s absence, but we shall have to be mindful about how we avoid asking others to visit. If we do, we must make sure they are chosen carefully.”

“No eligible ladies drawing attention away from you.” He fixed her with a stern expression. “Remember, Caroline, while Darcy will feel his superiority to simple country folk such as we shall be amongst, he puts great stock in treating people with generosity and appreciation, regardless of their station in life.”

She rolled her eyes. “You mean I should not make it plain how much I hate each and every person I meet? I shall do my best, but none of them had better provoke me. You know I prefer town life, but a month or two in the country impressing him with my suitability to be his wife and mistress of his estate, and he is sure to propose. Then it will be up to you to win Georgiana. Will she join us?”

Her brother shook his head. “She is in the country with the Romsleys and will remain there until the end of the year.”

“That is a shame. I am certain if he saw what a good sister I shall be to her, it would encourage him to propose sooner. Just imagine, Charles! Once I marry him, I shall be niece to an earl and countess. Then, after you marry Georgiana, you will be their nephew. How pleased Papa would be!”

Their father had died soon after Bingley’s twentieth birthday. A factory owner until the birth of his first child, he gave it up with the aim of making his offspring true ladies and gentlemen. On his deathbed, he insisted each of his three children vow to do everything possible to elevate their position in life and ensure the next generation were fully accepted members of the ton. Louisa had done her part by catching Hurst—an unattractive oaf, but one with excellent connexions—and it was up to Bingley and Caroline to do theirs. That would be accomplished by marrying the Darcy brother and sister. Shortly before their father’s death, and while Bingley was a student at Cambridge, Mr Darcy had attended some event or another, and the two gentlemen had met. Bingley pursued the friendship thereafter, using his recent bereavement to his advantage. Mr Darcy, too, had lost his father when he was young. Caroline was proud of the way her brother had skilfully deepened his friendship with Mr Darcy. Bingley had appealed to his vanity without annoying him with his persistence. She had grieved for her father, but at the same time, she took satisfaction at their family making such an advantageous connexion.

Returning to the subject of Georgiana Darcy, Caroline said, “Once I am Mrs Darcy, you will have ample opportunity to pursue her. You are my dear brother and will naturally be with us often, and I shall ensure she meets few other young men and thinks meanly of those she does. She is young, to be sure, but if she thinks only of you, if you make her a little in love with you now—but not so much it risks becoming exhausted by the time she enters society—no other man will have a chance of winning her hand. She will be seventeen in less than two years. Mr Darcy will agree she is old enough to marry off then, especially with me—his devoted wife—assuring him she is. That gives us a year and a half for you to convince her you are the very best of men.”

“I have every confidence in myself, especially with a girl like Georgiana, who is sweet and naïve in equal measure.”

Brother and sister exchanged excited smiles and continued to assure each other their scheme could not possibly fail.

I look forward to your thoughts on Caroline, the Bingleys, and their scheme! By commenting, you have a chance to win one of three e-book copies of A Matter of Prudence. (You do not have to be in Canada or the US for this.)

You can read the complete first three chapters on Book Funnel. 🙂

A Matter of Prudence officially releases on 7 August and is available for pre-order at Amazon.

    Oh my goodness. Ma-ni-pu-la-tive!! Yikes!!!
It will be goood to see those two get their comeuppance.
I love the colors of the cover. It reminds me of fall on the east coast. Beautiful!

The Bingley siblings definitely have an interesting perspective on how to treat other people. 🙂 Thanks, and good luck in the draw, SamH!

This is such an intriguing plot! I enjoy evil Bingley stories. I look forward to reading it! Congratulations on another book!

    1. Thanks, Rebecca! I had a great time writing a different sort of Bingley (for me). Good luck in the draw. 🙂

  1. Wow, a conniving Bingley! I love it! (Well, I hate it for Darcy’s sake, but it promises tension in the future, that’s for sure!) The Bingleys remind me a little of the Crawfords in MP—another sibling pair I love to hate! 😉

    Congrats on another release, Lucy!!

    1. The Crawford are easy to love to hate. I wonder who the equivalent of Fanny would be in A Matter of Prudence…🤷🏻‍♀️ I do feel bad for Darcy. This time, I can’t even blame him (much) for his own misfortunes. Thanks so much for commenting, Christina!

Wow! I’m not used to a scheming Bingley. I hate to think that Darcy is being used by both of them. It makes me anxious to see how it will all turn out. The cover is lovely!

    1. Bingley is usually a good guy, if a bit clueless. That’s part of the reason I thought it would be fun to write a scheming Bingley. I can give you a hint as to how it turns out—a HEA for those who deserve it. 🙂 Thanks, Kim!

Wow! This promises to be quite a wild ride, with characters so delusional and confident in their own abilities to seduce that I am on the edge of my seat with eagerness to read!!!

    1. There is nothing quite like having someone else who agrees that your plan is foolproof to convince you that it is! They (and Louisa Hurst) are so certain they will succeed that they cannot imagine any other outcome. Hmm… Thanks for reading and commenting! 🙂

‘Good grief! What a conniving duo! How much more deceitful could they be. Once Darcy realizes (probably with the help from the Colonel) their plans, their friendship and trust of Bingley will be over. There have been very few stories where Caroline and Bingley are working together to trap both Darcys, when they do, they are evil.

    1. I wouldn’t advise asking how much more deceitful they could be… heehee

Thanks for commenting, Caroline, and good luck in the draw!

How devious they are, I hate them already and hope the Darcys discover their true characters so they get a comeuppance.

    1. I have to say, there really isn’t much likeable about the Bingleys, although I did try to make them more misguided in their cruelty than out and out seeking to injure other people, if you know what I mean. I do like a good comeuppance, don’t you?

Thanks so much for your support! 🙂

Always look forward to reading your latest, Lucy. I’m not sneaking a peek. I want to savour it all at once! Love the cover with such a richness of colour. Can’t wait for the release.

    1. I completely understand not wanting to take a peek, although I usually cannot stop myself from doing it! Thanks so much for stopping by and checking out the cover! Good luck in the draw. 🙂

  2. Oh, Lucy! I can feel the angst settling in and squeezing my gullet! I never thought I’d ever dislike Mr Bingley but you’ve done it. Your cover is lovely. Congratualtions!

    1. Thank you, Susan; you are always so kind! I’d love to know your opinion of Bingley at the end of the story. <3

I’m really looking forward to reading this. Interesting new twist! I hope Jane sees through Bingley. If he is after Georgiana maybe he doesn’t pursue Jane? Nice story line of Collins living with the Bennett’s.

    1. Hmm…I guess you’ll have to read to find out what happens with Jane and Bingley! I’ll only say that something does. 😀

Ugh! A selfish hateful Caroline? yes that’s almost a given, but an equally hateful Bingley? not so common! I do hope they don’t get away with any of their plans and that they definitely get their comeuppance? 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻. Poor Darcy, thank goodness he seems to find a friend in Elizabeth, I do hope nobody manages to come between them 💘💞.
I love the colours on the cover, especially Elizabeth’s beautiful dress, that shade of burgundy is a favourite. 🥰🥰

    1. I always strive to dish out a healthy serving of comeuppance where it is deserved, and I promise Darcy and Elizabeth get their happily ever after—as they always must, in my opinion. Thank you so much for your ongoing support, Glynis. 🌷

Omg! These Bingleys are greedy, social climbing, evil and awful! Darcy is going to have a hard time avoiding their traps since he’s thinking that Bingley is a true friend. I’m so nervous for him.

    1. But, but they promised their dad! I’m sure there are some *nice* Bingleys, but I’m afraid, we don’t meet them in AMoP. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and good luck in the draw. 🙂

WOW! What a different spin on the Bingley siblings . I anticipate chaos erupting in Hertfordshire.

The cover is stunning — the color of Elizabeth’s dress is gorgeous!

    1. I don’t know what came over me when I was thinking about this book—change the Bingleys (especially Charles), toss Mr Collins into the Bennet household…and I may have a little wee change in a minor character too, something I’m thinking about further developing in a future story. How’s that for sounding mysterious? Haha. Thanks, Regina!

Well indeed!! What a pair of scheming chits!!!

Obviously their scheming will fail – and I hope it will be soon enough that Darcy’ eyes are open – maybe with some help from a perceptive and good judge character (for a change) young lady ?
They seem to be as despicable as Wickham – and I dread the conjuncture of their meeting in Meryton! – and poor Darcy coming just from Ramsgate….

Looking forward to the release day – and the cover is lovely (that colour of the gown…. wow!)

    1. I could just see Wickham figuring out what the Bingleys were up to and deciding to help them, couldn’t you? Yikes! What a disaster that would be. Thanks so much for your support, Mihaela! 🌻

I don’t read excerpts. Doing so makes the wait for the full copy to become available. Besides, I saw the author and knew I needed no further enticement, Lucy.
I like the foliage in the announcement, actually better than that on the cover, which is more ordinary. It is, however, a good cover. Admittedly, I think there are many covers that do not reflect the period of the novel, the characters have the wrong color hair, the clothing is later, and Darcy is OK, but not particularly handsome, let alone extremely handsome. This one does not fall into that category for me.

    1. I hear you on reading excerpts. Thank you so much for the compliment; it made me blush. 🙂

  3. The book sounds very intriguing and I just want to dive right in. The fact that Caroline Bingley is manipulative, mean spirited and just plain nasty is not new to me, but Charles? I know Charles to be wishy-washy and indecisive, but downright manipulative, crude and a liar, this character is new to me.
I love the cover, especially Elizabeth. Yes, she does look strong, she has some meat on her bones, but she has that look of confidence and an inner strength that only a fool would challenge. Great cover, great book.

Thank you for your give away. I hope that I am one of the lucky ones to receive your new book.
