His Family Objects: Cover Reveal & Excerpt

What better way to start a new week than with a cover reveal and excerpt! I first told you about His Family Objects, my new Regency Pride & Prejudice variation, at the end of March (see here), and today I’m ready to share more. The book comes out on Monday, 20 May (via Amazon in paperback, e-book, and via Kindle Unlimited). Be sure to comment on this post for the chance to win a copy of the e-book!

Let’s take a look at the cover. It was designed by Stephanie Fontecha at Beetiful Book Designs. I absolutely love the colours. Elizabeth being dressed for the outdoors fits, as she might just take a walk or two—some with a certain gentleman—in the story! It also fits that she is alone, since I am afraid she often feels alone. But—as always in my books—she and Darcy do have their happily ever after!

And now the excerpt. This is the prologue, and as you’ll see, we jump right into the angst. You’ll have to read more to learn what brought our poor Elizabeth and Darcy to this point.

Prologue

December 1812

It seemed wholly appropriate that the clouds were thickening and the wind growing stronger as Elizabeth made her way along the path. She had slipped away from her family and prayed no one had seen her leave Longbourn. She dreaded the prospect of their questions if they had.

He was waiting for her. Elizabeth did not know how long he had been standing by the pine trees she had named as their meeting spot, and she did not care. Stopping some fifteen feet from him, she pressed her lips together, pushed her shoulders back, and silently invited him to say what he would. No matter how much it injured her, she would not let him see it.

“How are you?” he asked.

She shrugged. Since he was the one who wanted to meet, he should bear the burden of speech. As resolute as she was determined to be, she was afraid that if she opened her mouth, too much would pour out—too many emotions and accusations.

After running both hands over his face and letting out an audible gust of air, Mr Darcy paced back and forth along a short section of the path. “I…I intended to return, I truly did, but—” He made an inarticulate noise, and it was a moment before he continued. “I am sorrier than I can say that I…could not. You will want to know what happened. You have every right to know. I am aware that Lady Catherine visited you.”

Elizabeth gritted her teeth, both at the remembrance of that woman’s deplorable behaviour and because she began to see why Mr Darcy had abandoned her. Lady Catherine had made her displeasure clear to him, just as she had to her. A fire began to rage in her belly.

“After seeing you, she came to London,” Mr Darcy said. “My aunt announced to my family that I was on the point of making an unsuitable match.”

“Were you?” Elizabeth interjected, unable to keep the bitterness from her voice. At the moment, she could not believe she would accept him if he were to propose.

His feet abruptly stopped moving, and he almost stumbled. He regarded her for a long moment, and something in his eyes melted a layer of the ice that was wrapped around her heart.

The truth was that she would not have hesitated to agree to be his wife; she would have thrown herself into his arms and cried tears of joy. She loved him. It was why she was presently so wretched and nearly sick with distress. Straightening her spine, she resolved anew to be stoic.

“Lady Catherine said she had it on good authority that I was about to propose to you,” Mr Darcy continued. “I do not know who told her. My family demanded to know whether what she said was true. What could I say? It was. They were not pleased by your position in life, but when they heard about your family’s connexion to Wickham, they…had a great deal to say—none of it good.”

“They objected?” Elizabeth had to suppress an angry bark of laughter. Her hands curled into fists.

“Strenuously and repeatedly.”

“Were they as disgusted by the idea of having a woman such as me as a relation as you said they would be last spring? Was it too much for you to overcome, or did you simply remember that it would be disgraceful to connect yourself to me, given I have relations in trade? You have met my aunt and uncle, invited them into your home, showed every sign of liking them, and yet you can—”

“You do not understand,” he insisted, stepping towards her.

“Shall I congratulate you on your marriage to Miss de Bourgh? It cannot be long in coming. You were quick to give in to your family’s demands to forget about me. Surely you will also accede to their wishes regarding which lady you should make your wife.”

“No!” he cried, his expression suggesting confusion. “I care nothing about my uncle and aunts’ opinions, but—”

“I refuse to continue this conversation. There is nothing you could say that would make me understand the choice you have made.” Elizabeth turned to walk away. She felt his hand touch her arm.

“Elizabeth—”

Spinning to face him, she hissed, “I do not give you leave to use my name! You forget that my sister is married, and I am Miss Bennet henceforth—especially to you. If we have the misfortune to meet again, you will address me as Miss Bennet until I find a man who will not reject me because of my connexions and lack of fortune. Until I find a man who is truly worthy of me.”

He blanched. “The situation is complicated. Please allow me to explain. This is not easy for me, but I have responsibilities.”

“Oh yes, of course you do, and an association with a lady of my sort would preclude you from fulfilling them. I understand. Do not spend a second of your precious time worrying about it.” Her tone was mocking, and as she spoke, pink spots appeared on his cheeks, either ones of anger or guilt.

“You do not understand.” He spoke quietly this time, and the look he gave her was one of longing, but she was too trapped by her hurt to admit it.

“I think I do, well enough. After everything that has happened, after how horrible I felt for misjudging you last spring, everything that passed between us in Derbyshire, everything I believed, you have decided that because your family does not think I am good enough for you, you will not have me. When it comes to the point, your family objects, and I am rejected. Goodbye, Mr Darcy.”

When she began to walk away, he called her name, and she heard the unmistakable sound of his boots stepping on twigs and dried leaves. There was no escaping him if he wished to pursue her. Her only hope lay in convincing him that she would not listen to more of his excuses. Without halting her steps, she spoke. She strove to keep her voice strong, though she knew it faltered.

“There is nothing to gain by continuing this conversation. Do not be so ungentlemanly as to force me to hear you when I do not want to!”

With that, she picked up speed and, after several minutes, accepted that he was not following her.

Oh my! What have I done to them this time? Let me know what you think. Everyone who comments will be entered into a draw for one of three e-books, generously supplied by my publisher. Winners will be announced on the Quills & Quartos Facebook page.

His Family Objects will be released Monday, 20 May. You can preorder it here. You can also read the first few chapters free via BookFunnel.

Beautiful cover. O what a scene. Why did he decide to marry Anne. Poor Elizabeth.

      1. I love the cover! Darcy did not marry Anne; don’t worry about that! Elizabeth just accused him of being ready to agree to Lady Catherine’s wishes that he does. Thank you for commenting, Bosa, and good luck in the draw.

    1. That is the question of the hour! Good luck in the giveaway, Kate!

Oh no! I really struggle with angst between ODC 😢😢😢. I think Elizabeth should have listened to him despite her heartbreak, there may have been a light at the end of the tunnel? I do hope they reach an arrangement soon and the remaining angst is between the two of them together against his family 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻.

Me too Glynis! You captured my sentiments exactly!

      1. I can certainly understand not wanting to see angst between E&D, but those crazy kids just can’t seem to help misunderstanding each other! 🙂

    1. I know you aren’t fond of angst—but what if I tell you there is also a lot of love between them? Elizabeth will eventually realise she probably should have let him speak—just as he realises he should have done more to let her know what the problem was. Thanks for commenting, Glynis. 🌸 🤗

Wow! That was heart-breaking. I could feel Elizabeth’s pain and wonder exactly what it is that Darcy wants her to understand. Her final sling about ungentlemanly behavior if he continued to follow her must have really hit home! Looking forward to reading the entire story. Congratulations on publishing another wonderful book.

I think Darcy appears desperate to make things right but seems very hesitant about a great many things, I know not what. Perhaps another letter to explain would help Elizabeth to understand?

And poor Darcy, tounge tied and inarticulate giving EB time to let her anger and sadness overwhelm her. Congrats on another new release. Thanks for the giveaway chance.

    1. I think Darcy is full to overflowing with heavy emotions even before he speaks to Elizabeth. 😢 Poor him & poor her. Good luck with the draw, ColleenL, and thanks for taking the time to comment!

Oh dear. Darcy tried to tell her that he did not care about the objection of his uncle and aunt, but should have insisted on telling her why there was obviously someone in his family whose objection he DID care about, and the clues tell us who, and why. But I can see why Elizabeth, hurt as she is, would not listen at this time. I love the cover —the autumn leaves and the association of fading love, the coming of winter’s ice, her pose that is turned away and yet with a hint of her wishing to turn back. I am looking forward to reading and seeing how a happy HEA can be possible in the end.

    1. Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Kate. I’m glad people recognised that Darcy had more to say but Elizabeth did not let him explain. You managed to capture exactly why I love the cover for this story; it just fits so well. Good luck in the draw.

This is definitely a new twist. There have been obnoxious Georgianna characters but never one that couldn’t handle Wickam as a brother-in-law. Is she in deep depression and can’t see how she is hurting her brother? Can’t wait to see how the characters develop.
Love the jewel toned dress and that her back is to us, just like Darcy in chapter 1.

If that wasn’t a heartbreaking beginning, I don’t know what would be. I feel very sorry for each of them. Elizabeth because her anger caused her to refuse to listen or him because his shame allowed him to be silent. She had no reason to trust him. He, on the other hand, wouldn’t explain. People being people – even in books – are so irritating even when you know an HEA may be at the end. I can’t quite imagine how you’ll reach that HEA but the journey looks to be exciting.

    1. I’m with you on ‘people being people’. As readers (or viewers), I believe we often think ‘what they should have done is…’ (or what I would have done is…), but we all don’t always act rationally—especially when our emotions are all over the place.

I assure you, I found a way to get them together—with no one objecting (apart from Lady Catherine, but of course she does!)

Looks like a lovely angst fest! Thank you for the excerpt and giveaway. Congrats and best wishes on the new release!

    1. Thank you, Robin G. I wanted some good angst this time, and I think I achieved it.

I very much look forward to reading this. It seems that Elizabeth has not yet learned to control her habit of jumping to wrong conclusions and Darcy has not yet learned to speak plainly when given the opportunity. He should not have started the conversation with “his family objects,” but instead should have gotten straight to the point regarding Georgiana’s fragile state and how it relates to Lizzy’s connection to Wickham. These two always mess up their conversations.
    😉

    1. Oh, I agree. But their emotions are definitely running high. Darcy is devastated (as becomes more evident in future chapters) and Elizabeth heartbroken. 😢 Thanks for commenting, Wendy, and good luck in the draw!

Oh, dear, the angst. Looking forward to reading it.

    1. I definitely added a bit of angst this time. It was fun! 😂

Oh my. How are you going to get things resolved between them? Thank you for sharing! (I think.) 😉

    1. You’ll have to read to see—but rest assured, they do find their way together again. 😊

I love the cover but not Darcy here. He’s acting like Bingley.

    1. I’m usually pretty iffy on Bingley, but I adore the Bingley in HFO. Just saying. 😀 Thanks for commenting!

Lucy Marin is one of my go-to JAFF authors. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by her. I can’t wait for this latest release. The cover is let’s us see Elizabeth standing straight and true in her world.

    1. What a lovely thing to say! Thank you very much. 🌸

Lovely cover. I always prefer the back view because we all have our own picture of Lizzy in our minds. And great prologue. Thank you for sharing it.

    1. That’s a good point about Elizabeth. We certainly do all have our own ideas of how the characters look (and I tend to keep descriptions rather vague for this reason). I’m glad you liked the prologue. Thanks for commenting!

How could Darcy resist going to Elizabeth at once and at least extending a hand? The deep burgundy attire would emphasize her lovely English complexion. A few words of how he adores her might have been a better start, but then he’s still like Darcy at Hunsford, unfortunately. Can’t wait to read it. Congratulations on another intriguing plot

    1. I’m sure Darcy will be reviewing everything he did and did not say, what he should have done, etc., during the long sleepless nights ahead of him. 😔 Poor man.

Thanks for taking the time to comment & good luck in the giveaway!

Ghaaaaaa! Cliffie! Beautiful cover…you can just feel the hurt; the anguish in the color of her gown. Her back to him. There is the impenetrable wall. Oh I can see this one will be full of some serious angst. Woohoo, I can’t wait!

    1. Elizabeth will show her steel spine in HFO—but also her tender heart. I hope you enjoy the book. Thanks for commenting, Chris!

Omg! You are trying to torture us by jumping right into all of the angst. I can’t wait to see how Darcy fixes the mess he has made. I just love all of your stories.

    1. Better to set the tone right away. Heehee. Thank you for your kind words; I really appreciate them. 😊

It is a lovely cover, but I have a feeling I may have a hard time seeing through my tears as I read. Unfortunately for me, even if I know there will be an hea, a well written heartbreak, as I know this will be, will still make me cry.

    1. I went through a fair few tissues working on HFO—and I knew exactly what would happen! Thanks for commenting, and good luck in the giveaway. 🌸

Oh my goodness, my heart is racing a mile a minute! I was living Elizabeth’s upset right along with her. Can’t wait for the release.

    1. I really feel terrible for both of them (knowing what’s behind Darcy’s actions). Thanks for your support, and I hope you enjoy the book!

Such a beginning! Love it and May 20th is my birthday. Waiting! Best Wishes!

    1. Happy early birthday, Jennifer! I’m glad you like the sounds of my latest book baby. 🥳

  2. Just adding my voice to the many above who have expressed their excitement! Oh, you do love to give these two a hard time, don’t you? It strikes me that, in other novels, you’ve made Darcy the “blocker” to their happiness, so to speak. It will be fascinating to see Elizabeth have to wrestle even more with her pride in this case! (No need to enter me into the drawing, of course…just wanted to say congrats and yay!)

    1. Haha, yes, I do like giving them a hard time. In HFO, I think Elizabeth also becomes an obstacle in their relationship, but that comes later. Ultimately, I think the reasons they both have to stay apart are valid—but there are always other paths we (or they, in this case) might have taken. Thanks for taking the time to read & comment, Christina. 🥰

Just the sample intrigued me. You captivated the emotions of a heartbroken rejection, that is unfortunately a universal theme in so many people’s lives. I’m so glad you’ve assured the reader that ODC will hz d a happy ending!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment, Karon. I’m glad you liked the excerpt. 🌸

I was too overcome to respond in a timely manner. My heart is broken. Once again, you have destroyed my peace. How can I survive the whole book when I was overcome with just this segment? I still adore you, just saying.

    1. 😂 I knew *some people* would comment on the angst. 🤗 If it is any consolation, I think this might be my most romantic book in the broad sense of there being a lot of love floating around (along with a lot of sadness).
