Swap Meet Chapter 1

Hello, all! This story has been hanging around my hard drive unfinished for a couple of years now, and I’ve finally decided to finish it and let it see the light of day. It’s a modern comedy and eight short chapters that I will post relatively quickly. Happy reading!

From: Elizabeth Bennet

To: Jane Bennet

Subject: Weekend

Jane –

I’ll get in late Friday night, conference all day Saturday, post-conference cocktails after, fly out Sunday evening. I might be able to do a late dinner Saturday night and can def do brunch on Sunday. Let me know what works for you.

Lizzy

From: Jane Bennet

To: Elizabeth Bennet

Subject: Re: Weekend

Lizzy-

I’m so glad you’re coming to town! I wish you were staying longer but at least I get to see you. I have a date Saturday night. We’ve only been out a few times and it isn’t serious, but I hate to break it off because scheduling has been a nightmare. It’s already been 2 weeks since our last date. Definitely put me down for brunch Sunday and if we go early Saturday night I can meet up with you afterward.

Love you sis!

Jane

From: Charles Bingley

To: F.J. Darcy

Subject: weekend

Will –

I’ll be in town after all. Free Saturday night if you want to meet up.

Charles

From: F.J. Darcy

To: Charles Bingley

Subject: Re: weekend

Charles –

I have a date Saturday night, can’t cancel. Find a date and make it a foursome?

Will

From: Charles Bingley

To: Elizabeth Bennet

Subject: Surprise!

Liz,

Remember that conference I wasn’t going to? Well, guess who’s going? I know we’ll be so busy that we probably won’t have much time together, but do you want to grab dinner Saturday night? I’m meeting an old friend and his girlfriend. We can hold hands under the table. 😉

Charlie

From: Elizabeth Bennet

To: Charles Bingley

Subject: Re: Surprise!

Charlie –

Sounds great! I’ll plan on it.

Lizzy

From: F.J. Darcy

To: Jane Bennet

Subject: Saturday night

Jane,

I know we’ve been trying to get together for ages, but an old friend is unexpectedly in town Saturday night. Would you mind if he and his date joined us for dinner? Can’t wait to see you.

William

From: Jane Bennet

To: F.J. Darcy

Subject: Re: Saturday night

William,

Of course I don’t mind! More people to show off my new dress to.

Jane

From: F.J. Darcy

To: Jane Bennet

Subject: Re: Re: Saturday night

Now I really can’t wait.

Will

From: Elizabeth Bennet

To: Jane Bennet

Subject: Plans

Jane,

Don’t worry about Saturday night. I’ve got plans with that guy I told you about from the firm across town – the one who asked me out after I beat him in the Clarkson deal. We’ve only been out 4 or 5 times but he’s really fun. You’d love him!

Lizzy

From: Charles Bingley

To: F.J. Darcy

Subject: Lady Luck

A date you won’t cancel on? Who is she? Would I like her?

C

From: F.J. Darcy

To: Charles Bingley

Subject: Re: Lady Luck

Her name is Jane and she’s very sweet and kind. Please don’t embarrass me.

W

From: Charles Bingley

To: F.J. Darcy

Subject: Who me?

I’m hurt. I can’t believe you think I would embarrass you! A sweet girl is just what you need. Not another hag like that last woman you dated.

C

From: F.J. Darcy

To: Charles Bingley

Subject: Re: Who me?

Really, Charles, you shouldn’t talk about your own sister that way. Even if it is true.

From: Charles Bingley

To: F.J. Darcy

Subject: The truth hurts

Hey, just being honest.

From: Jane Bennet

To: Elizabeth Bennet

Subject: Re: Plans

Lizzy,

That sounds good. My date is turning into a group thing, so we may grab a drink or something after, just the two of us. I’ll meet you in your hotel lobby at 10 on Sunday. Sound good?

Jane

From: Elizabeth Bennet

To: Jane Bennet

Subject: Re: Plans

Jane,

Better make it 9. My flight is at 8 and I wanted to squeeze in a little shopping if you’re up for it.

Drinks just the two of you, late at night… Sounds like fun. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. 😉

L

From: Jane Bennet

To: Elizabeth Bennet

Subject: Stop it

Get your mind out of the gutter! It’s only the fourth date! And each date has been almost 2 weeks apart. I barely know the guy. Definitely not getting naked with him yet.

J

From: Elizabeth Bennet

To: Jane Bennet

Subject: Denial

Haha! Whatever you say, Janey! I’ll pretend you’ve never slept with a guy before going steady for at least 6 months. You can pretend I’ve never… What would be the equivalent to that? Crap! Counsel’s back.

From: Jane Bennet

To: Elizabeth Bennet

Subject: Re: Denial

You’re terrible! You’re lucky I’m so nice or I would have ditched you ages ago.

BTW, I’m putting in an offer on that co-op uptown I told you about. Would you look over the papers for me Sunday?

J

From: Elizabeth Bennet

To: Jane Bennet

Subject: Papers

Of course I’ll look at them for you. Boarding the plane now. See you soon!

      Elizabeth,
What a clever move to pair Elizabeth with Charles and Jane with Darcy!
Must admit I had to double check I’d read the emails correctly!!
So looking forward to finding out how this particular ‘arrangement’ pans out! 😉
      Thank you.
      Mary.

      1. I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I got the wild idea and ran with it for my own amusement. It makes me laugh more than anything else I’ve written. Maybe.

It is an interesting beginning. I cannot imagine Bingley dating Lizzy and Darcy dating Jane. Can we expect fireworks at the group date that sparks some changes?

    1. I think it could be possible. Not as serious partners, but I could see them going on a few dates. Darcy likes to have the best, and Jane is very beautiful. Bingley is fun loving, and so is Elizabeth.

BTW…Like I stated before, I would love to see “On Equal Ground” up on the big screen. I truly believe it would make an amazing movie.

Reading this was fun! I would devour an entire book like this in no time. I can’t wait for the continuing chapters. ….and inquiring minds want to know…why was thing hanging around for so long? This story doesn’t just have potential it has the promise of being another great read! Also, I absolutely agree with a previous post…. “On Equal Ground” would make a fantastic movie with the right casting, of course.

    1. THANK YOU!!! And the answer is, I don’t know what it was hanging around. Maybe I lost the inspiration. Who knows?

And I am wildly curious to know who you would cast in On Equal Ground. Share, please!

This was hilarious. I can’t wait to see what’s next. This is a trainwreck waiting to happen. What fun!! I love a good trainwreck… oh, not really, just a good trainwreck story. You know what I mean. Gad!

    1. Haha! Yes, I know exactly what you mean! Posting the next chapter now. 🙂

  2. Love the quick, breezy style. The notes are short, yet you get a clear sense of the characters personalities, and even without knowing the original, the reader knows a surprise is in store for the characters. Cool twist having the partners mixed up–it will be fun to see them untwist.
Thanks for posting it! I look forward to being able to read more.

I have been saving the chapters in that I hate to read just one chapter and then when I pick it up again I can’t remember what the story was about…I just read too many stories. So I am hoping I get notice when the book is complete.
