Have you heard the news? The latest film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility has everyone talking!
Tomorrow (October 16) represents the release date of director Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility in the US. In the UK and other markets, however, the film has been out for several weeks.
Have you seen it? Will you see it? What do you think of that long, unbrushed hair?
Here at Austen Variations, we are writers, so we tend to prefer books over films (even Dame Emma Thompson’s brilliant 1995 adaptation)! Some of us love Sense and Sensibility so much we have written variations or edited annotated versions of the novel!
To celebrate the release of the film, we have put these books on sale starting today in the US and UK Amazon marketplaces!
Let’s be honest: Sense and Sensibility doesn’t get the same love as Pride and Prejudice, certainly not in the world of JAFF. Maybe it’s time to let one of these variations convince you to try something new!

Colonel Brandon in His Own Words by Shannon Winslow
Colonel Brandon is the consummate gentleman: honorable, kind almost to a fault, ever loyal and chivalrous. He’s also silent and grave, though. So what events in his troubled past left him downcast, and how does he finally find the path to a brighter future? In Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen gives us glimpses, but not the complete picture.
Now Colonel Brandon tells us his full story in His Own Words. He relates the truth about his early family life and his dear Eliza – his devotion to her and the devastating way she was lost to him forever. He shares with us a poignant tale from his military days in India – about a woman named Rashmi and how she likewise left a permanent mark on his soul. And of course Marianne. What did Brandon think and feel when he first saw her? How did his hopes for her subsequently rise, plummet, and then eventually climb upwards again? After Willoughby’s desertion, what finally caused Marianne to see Colonel Brandon in a different light?
This is not a variation but a supplement to the original story, chronicled in Brandon’s point of view. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the things Jane Austen didn’t tell us about a true hero – the very best of men.
“I fell in love with Colonel Brandon all over again!” – Amazon reviewer

The Second Chance by Joana Starnes
Soon after the Netherfield ball, a troubled Mr. Darcy decides to walk away from a most unsuitable fascination. But heartache is in store for them all, and his misguided attempts to ensure the comfort of the woman he loves backfire in ways he had not expected…
Why is it that the worth of a true blessing is never felt as keenly as when it seems to have become quite out of reach? In this tale of ‘Pride & Prejudice’ meets ‘Sense & Sensibility’, Mr Darcy is compelled to reflect on this very question, as he struggles to come to terms with the effects of his wrong choices, and fervently hope for a second chance at finding happiness.
“Well, sir, what shall it be? The joy of music or of the printed word?” she asked, in a manner so highly reminiscent of their past interactions as to make him almost giddy with renewed hope.
“The joy of you. My greatest folly was to ever walk away from it.”
Once again, Joana Starnes completely had me, hook, line and sinker. I can’t recommend enough! – Amazon Reviewer

The Year in Between by Christina Morland
Marianne Dashwood was “born to an extraordinary fate…to discover the falsehood of her own opinions, and to counteract, by her conduct, her most favorite maxims” (Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility). After Willoughby’s betrayal, how did Marianne learn to see Colonel Brandon–and herself–in a new light? And how did Elinor Dashwood and Edward Ferrars fare during their first year of marriage?
The Year in Between explores the untold year in the last chapter of Sense and Sensibility. Whether you know Austen’s novel well, or this is your first introduction to Elinor, Marianne, Edward, and Brandon, I invite you to visit Delaford, where friendship, love, and all the challenges that come with these gifts abound.
“I do not think I have the words to describe how indescribably brilliant this work is! It is everything I could have hoped for, wanted, expected, and more!”~Meredith Esparza, Austenesque Reviews

Hi Christina,
I saw it Monday night!!! Alamo Drafthouse had a national screening and talk back with the lead actresses. I only found it by dumb luck. It was pricey but worth it. I enjoyed the film and give it a 3.75-4.25. AiB is seeing it Sunday. It will be interesting to see how AiB’s S&S superfan reacts to it. She posted some negative reviews, which motivated me to see it solo. In the post film talk back…the Elinor actress was worthy of Emma Thompson and Hattie Morahan. The Marianne actress swore three times and did launch a passionate defense of the hair! JASNA’s VP of Publications posted a review yesterday that I think is spot on.
