Now I’m in trouble…

Uh, oh. Now I’m in trouble! You can throw rotten fruit, but no death threats, okay? 😉

Evil Plot Bunny

I like writing happy books. But last summer I posted something on Facebook about how much I’d enjoyed writing variations where Mr. Darcy had a brother, and suddenly an evil plot bunny sprung full-grown into life right in front of me. It was such a high-angst idea that I could barely manage to look it in the eye, much less think about writing it, but that scary little plot bunny sunk its teeth into me and wouldn’t let go. I’ve been working on it ever since, though I have to say I didn’t pick a good time to decide to write an angsty story! But I’m about 3/4 of the way through it now, and it’s time to share my dark secret with you.

Now, pray keep in mind that I have an absolute, unbreakable rule: Darcy and Elizabeth have to end up together and happy, so I give you that guarantee. I’ll even add in that I don’t kill anyone off, and everybody ends up happy unless they’re named Wickham, in which case they get what they deserve. And, boy, does he ever deserve it this time! 😉

So, with that reassurance, I’m going to show you my scary, terrible, horrible, no good, very bad plot bunny, and then you can throw things at me. Except I’ll be hiding in my bunker, just like I did when I wrote my other angsty book, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy: The Last Man in the World.

Why, I hear you ask, would you want to read about my angsty scenario when the world is angst-filled enough already? Well, if you make it through and leave a comment without any death threats directed to me (rotten vegetables permitted), I’ll add your name to my list for potential beta readers and ARC readers for this story, and you can be the first to read the agony I put poor Darcy through the story. I only have a certain number of slots, though, so if there are too many, I’ll pick randomly.  ETA: Already have far more comments than slots, so I’ll be picking randomly. Wow, had no idea so many people would be interested in an angst-fest!

Here is an excerpt from the first chapter so that you can see what I’m struggling with. It takes place the night Darcy returns to Pemberley, the day before the rest of his party arrives, but there was no miraculous meeting with Elizabeth on the grounds.

Home. He was home, but it was all wrong. Elizabeth was supposed to be with him, lighting the darkness with her smiles, bringing laughter back to Pemberley, the sort of laughter he remembered from his childhood. But all that joy had ebbed away as he grew up and all the arguments over Drew had poisoned the atmosphere. Then his mother’s death, and his father’s long illness had completed the process. He had thought Elizabeth’s fine, sparkling eyes could banish the joyless emptiness, that her wit and warmth could rekindle love and happiness at Pemberley. And then she had refused him. Bitterly, angrily, and leaving him no room for hope.

The butler appeared at the study door. “Mr. Andrew Darcy is here to see you,” said Hobbes.

Darcy straightened. Drew was actually here, at Pemberley, and seeking him out? Wonders never ceased. Perhaps something good had come of all of this after all, and at least he would have regained one person he had lost. “Show him in.”

Hobbes hesitated. In that slight, almost imperceptible shift of tone the old butler used for matters he deemed significant, he said, “Mr. Andrew is in the drawing room.”

Darcy glanced around the study. Why did Hobbes want Darcy to see Drew in the more formal setting of the drawing room rather than here? Was something wrong? But Hobbes had known Drew through all those years when Darcy had been off at school and university, so perhaps he was aware of something.

Darcy rose to his feet. “Very well; I will see him there.”

Was that a flicker of relief in the butler’s faded eyes? “Very good, sir.”

As Darcy passed between heavy carved doors of the study, the reason suddenly struck him. It had been his father’s study, of course, and the place that gentleman had always delivered tongue lashings and occasional canings to the children of the house. Darcy recalled all too well a few unpleasant visits there, but Drew, who had always been in trouble for one thing or another, must have many bad memories of it. Yes, much better to meet elsewhere.

And Hobbes had realized it, when Darcy had not. Elizabeth had been right when she accused him of a selfish disdain for the feelings of others.

But he was determined to change, and Drew’s presence here was proof of it. Elizabeth’s refusal had led to his decision to reach out to Drew once more, to offer him the living in Kympton, and to tolerate patiently – or at least with the external appearance of patience – as Drew warily examined his generous offer for potential traps. Elizabeth had taught him that much; he could not assume anyone would trust his motives just because he wished them to do so. His patience had paid off; Drew had, in the end, accepted the living, and now he was back at Pemberley where he belonged.

And there was Drew, standing on the far side of the drawing room, studying a small watercolor on the wall.

“Georgiana painted that last year,” Darcy said. “I thought she caught the autumn colors particularly well.”

Drew started and spun around to face him. “Yes. She appears to have a good eye for the picturesque,” he said stiffly. Always stiffly. Would Drew never trust him? But that would take time, and more patience.

“She does, although she only sees the faults in her paintings.” No. He needed to be warm and approachable. “Welcome. I am glad to see you. Some wine, perhaps?”

Drew’s lips tightened. What had Darcy done wrong now? “No, I thank you, and I will not take up much of your time. I am sorry to trouble you when you have only just arrived.”

“Not at all. I am very pleased to see you. How have you found the parsonage at Kympton? Is it in satisfactory condition?”

Drew plucked at his cuffs, looking uncomfortable. “Yes, very satisfactory, and I thank you again for granting me the living there.”

“You have done me a favor in taking it. I am relieved to have it in reliable hands.”

He plunged on, as if nervous. “But I would not have troubled you on your first night at home, had I not something in particular to tell you, and I wanted you to hear this news from me rather than from someone else.”

Oh, no. That sounded ominous. What sort of trouble had Drew got himself into now? Whatever it was, Darcy had to remain calm. “What sort of news?”

Drew took a deep breath. “I am engaged to be married.”

“Engaged? My congratulations! That is excellent news.” At least he knew how to respond properly to this, even if the thought of Drew being married came as shock. Or perhaps it merely brought home his own failure to become engaged. Elizabeth should be sitting beside him as his wife, and instead he was alone, while Drew was engaged. “May I ask who the fortunate lady is?” Not that he had any particular worries in that regard. When he had made inquiries about Drew’s recent behavior before offering him the living, there had been nothing about petticoat chasing.

“Actually,” Drew said slowly, “I believe you are acquainted with her. Her name is Miss Bennet. Miss Elizabeth Bennet.”

The world froze as the words echoed inside his head. No. It could not be. This was some horrible joke. Or perhaps he had heard wrong. “Miss Elizabeth Bennet of Longbourn?” Astonishingly, his voice still worked.

“The very one.” Drew watched him steadily.

It could not be. Drew, engaged to Elizabeth? Darcy had known that someday she would marry another man, but not so soon. And not Drew! God help him, not Drew. Darcy would have to witness them together again and again, to know she was in Drew’s arms, that she was bearing Drew’s children, not his… He drew in a harsh breath, fighting the urge to clutch at his stomach, to scream at Drew that it was impossible.

But if he raised his voice to Drew, or even criticized him, he would never see his brother again. It had taken all these years to reach the point where Drew would converse with him, much less step over the threshold of Pemberley. He could not lose him now.

And how could he blame Drew for loving Elizabeth, when he himself found her so utterly irresistible? But Elizabeth did not want him. She wanted Drew. Blood pounded in his ears.

Finally Darcy managed to say, “I was unaware she was acquainted with you.”

Drew shrugged. “She never mentioned you to me, either, until after I proposed to her.”

Elizabeth had accepted Drew. Agreed to marry him, after telling Darcy he was the last man in the world she could be prevailed upon to marry. But she had chosen to become Drew’s wife. His chest grew painfully tight. Would he ever be able to draw a full breath again?

He had to say something, all the proper things, even if his world was breaking into tiny pieces. “You are fortunate man. I wish you both happy. When is the wedding?”

“We have not yet set a date. This was only settled two days ago. You are among the first to know.” Drew raised an eyebrow and said deliberately, “Miss Bennet feared you might object to the connection, but I told her I did not need your permission to marry.”

Darcy swallowed hard. Of course he objected. Objecting did not begin to describe his feelings about it. But he said, “I cannot think why. She is a gentleman’s daughter, and thus perfectly suitable.” How could laughing, teasing, witty Elizabeth possibly marry stern, angry Drew? Oh, yes, he objected, and with every bone of his body. But he could never, ever say so.

Drew actually smiled. “Good. I am glad of that.”

Darcy could not imagine ever feeling glad again.

But there was one thing he had to know, one more bit of salt to pour on the jagged open wound in his heart. “I seem to recall hearing her portion was small. Is this a love match, then?”

The lines on Drew’s forehead smoothed. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I love her.”

Well? What do you think? Screams of protest? Rotten vegetables? I’ll be in my bunker under Pemberley! Secret: It’s actually quite a romantic book, once you get past the shock!

Wow, that was quite a blow to poor Darcy! I am looking forward to reading the resolution. Thank you for the excerpt. I will not thank you for the picture of the evil plot bunny. That will likely appear in some bad dreams. 🙂

Taking deep breaths to calm down. Wow, this is bad! What the heck happened in the Darcy family? Does Elizabeth love Drew so much that she would do this, marry the brother of the man that confesses to love her ardently? As bad as she thinks he is, I cannot imagine her to be so cruel. How can Darcy live his life with his sister-in-law, the woman he loves almost next door, married to his brother? This is a situation you would not want for your worse enemy. Darcy Sr does not look so amiable here, what did he do to Drew? Love how Darcy still wants to connect with Drew, even if it gives him more pain. I need to know what happened!

You should have shot that plot bunny in the head and buried it. This will not be my cup of tea. The idea of Darcy getting Elizabeth by either taking her away from his brother or his death and marrying his brother’s widow is a firm no for me. And God help us if Wickham is mixed up in this mess. I don’t have enough anti-depressants for this angst.

Well, that’s certainly interesting. I don’t mind some angst, I don’t even mind if Darcy lost Elizabeth permanently to Colonel Fitzwilliam, but a brother is certainly something else. He doesn’t seem bad guy, so I hope you won’t have him hurt or killed. Maybe he finds his true love elsewhere and releases Elizabeth?

Oh my Ms Reynolds this was truly disheartening. I feel so, sorry for the haughty man (even if he was like the Darcy in the Last Man in the World). Our curiosity is piqued, how will they end up together but still a happy ending for everyone?

Tank you for sharing your upcoming book. We all look forward to ti

I thoroughly enjoy an angst filled novel, but not if they keep making the same mistakes over and over. I much prefer the rolling disasters, a different one each time. Much like our real lives.

    But, bring it on!

Well, since you mention The Last Man in the World, I remember reading it while it was being posted at HG (it was the one that drew me to that site, why is everyone reminding me of those days just now? Jack Caldwell just recalled those days too!). I did think (and comment) that you put Elizabeth through the mill in that one, and still it has become an all-time favourite, even through there have been so many FMS stories, wonderful in their own right too, since then. So – turnabout is fair play, I suppose, Darcy will just have to take it like a man (and become an even better man, if it is possible).
I am a bit cautious because I am really not a love triangle person (one of the plots I avoid like hell is the Darcy/Elizabeth/Colonel Fitz triangle, which is rather similar to this one in dynamics. However, you have put us through so many dastardly plots with very satisfying results, that I am not going to resist this one – resistance is futile anyway). Especially since you gave the assurance of not only a D/E HEA but also not killing people off (I already have a soft spot for this Andrew Darcy in spite of his horrible place in this angle of relationships).
I remember that in another book you had Elizabeth consciously avoid this very situation when she decided to refuse Colonel Fitzwilliam (so as not to put Darcy through the pain of seeing her in his life forever but unattainable). Something must be horribly wrong here that this situation even arose.
I’d love to be a beta/ARC reader if you need one!

I do wonder what could have happened though to make Elizabeth accept Andrew, when she knows he’s the brother of “the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry”? Intrigued, definitely ready to read this book, especially after The Last man in the world and besides I do not believe that it could be so bad, since you did promise us a HEA for Darcy and Elizabeth

Wow….my heart is pounding, just like Darcy’s….and my heart is breaking for him. Poor Darcy, to lose your soul mate to your brother…a brother you are hoping to get close to again…thus shattering your heart into a million pieces. Having to force your feelings down deeply inside, and pretend to be happy for your brother and Elizabeth. Not only will he have to deal with seeing his beloved with another man, but to have that man be his brother…will keep the wound open and raw. Their first meeting since Hunsford will be even more tense. When did Drew and Elizabeth meet – post or pre-Hunsford? Does Drew know that Darcy proposed to Elizabeth? Did he know before he proposed? Did he know before he accepted the living at Kympton? Does Drew truly love Elizabeth? Does Elizabeth truly love Drew? Sibling rivalry has been ratcheted up to enormous levels. What a love triangle! I am so VERY glad that you always have ODC achieve their HEA. My heart aches…when Darcy and Elizabeth come together…how will that impact Darcy’s relationship with Drew (assuming Elizabeth isn’t Drew’s widow when ODC finally comes together). Soooooooo many possibilities… I can’t wait to read this story and see how you are able to have Darcy and Elizabeth reach their HEA!

    Am I a terrible person?
I’ve been waiting for an angsty novel like this for ages. Angst and torment and predicaments…
I believe conflict and problems make a happy ending sweeter so go ahead! Don’t hold anything back!
The Last Man in the World was my favorite –and the first JAFF I’ve ever read– so that plot bunny is definitely my friend.

Now to the story… You sure didn’t pull any punches. Drew is Darcy’s brother and a battered one at that. His character instantly stirs questions (which is good, writing-wise) and sympathy. It needs a master to keep the balance and not disappoint the readers with silly outcomes–like killing him to get him out of the way (I know you said you won’t do that!)
Angst is great but as everything in life there is cheep angst (where main characters are killed, raped, abused, fell victims to pickpockets for no reason that helps the narrative) and there is quality angst. I have every faith you’ll make it work. And I will enjoy it. :-))
What can I say? I’m a terrible person!
    Good luck! Alexandra

Only in their case. Will Drew meet with tragedy and untimely death or a riding accident rendering him impotent? Will Darcy send Drew off somewhere so he can dedicate time to woo her? Will he have him followed to prove his Wickam like ways to Elizabeth? Will Elizabeth’s opinion change and she eventually fall for William but feels trapped with Drew so she gives William her body in a night of passion that leads them to be caught out by Drew? I confess, my mind reels with the possibilities of this novel. Already it reminds me more of some of the original books which are my faves. I love it! No throwing of vegetables on my part. I always like a little trouble for Elizabeth and Darcy before the inevitable love between them. I look forward to the finished product.

OMG my heart dropped into my stomach, and I have tears prickling in my eyes for Darcy. It’s always hard on my emotions when Darcy has to see Elizabeth with other men. I can’t wait to see how they all end up with their happily ever afters.

Well, I’m generally not much for angst, but I do always love your stories, so I guess I’m intrigued. I’m trying to imagine an Elizabeth that would become engaged to Darcy’s brother and then only reveal that she knew Darcy after the engagement. Something is very strange there. Not sure if I’ll be able to handle it, but I do want to know what happens now.

I’d love to read the ARC 😉

I will admit, I almost pushed this aside to read later tonight, but I kept reading anyway. I am not quite sure how I feel about this yet. My heart goes out for Darcy, and I kept waiting for a smirking, evil look to appear on Andrew’s face as Darcy wasn’t looking. You are cruel, baiting us this way and leaving us hanging like that. ; ) Looking forward to reading more.

OMG! oh, my head hurts… I think that was where I hit the floor. OMG! This is horrible, amazing, excruciatingly cruel, and yet, exciting. What have you done? 🍈🍉🍊🍋🍌🍍🥭🍎🍏🍐🍑🍒🍓🍅 Yeah, that’s a lot of fruit, baby.

I must say, that is a fabulous picture of your evil plot bunny. Hilarious, I couldn’t help but laugh… until I started reading this excerpt. OMG! Well, you have a great list of people to choose from for your Beta read. I know many of them and they will do you proud. Good luck in the drawing everyone. I need to go and soak my head now… that bump is not going away anytime soon. I may have a concussion. Is there a doctor in the house? Oh, yeah, you’re a doctor. My eyes are crossed right now so I can’t read any more excerpts. I think I should lie down now.

Blessings on the continued work of this story and happy launch when it is ready. Stay safe and healthy.

OMG! I just realized… if Elizabeth marries Drew, even if he dies… Darcy still cannot marry her because she is considered his sister [though by marriage]. Did I remember that correctly? That concussion has rattled my brain. I think there was a law about that. I’ll have to look that up.

I’m not sure what the rules are, but I recalled reading part of a P&P series a few years ago where Darcy & Elizabeth’s extend family over the years had something of that issue come up where the eldest brother died and the younger brother marries his brother’s wife because he had secretly always loved her.

Here is an interesting rabbit hole that I fell in regarding marrying relations. Thank goodness it was not the warren of TEPB [The Evil Plot Bunny].

          http://jasna.org/publications/persuasions-online/vol36no1/bailey/

Marrying relatives: The list of relations that one could not marry was laid down in the Marriage Act of 1540 and remained in place during the time of Austen.

There is also a reference to relatives of Austen’s who were caught in their attempt to circumvent this legal ruling by marrying in another country.

Oh My Goodness! I can’t wait to read more and find out how Drew and Elizabeth met and started interacting to come to that conclusion for him to propose marriage!

Thank goodness for guaranteed HEA! ❤️ angst filled stories and I 🤚🏻my hand to volunteer to put my name in as a potential reader.

Love your stories. Just curious, one of my favorites “Mr. Darcy’s Enchantment” is an amazing magical crafted retelling- have you considered expanding it into a series?

Wow! Shock and Awe!!!!! Well-written, as usual, with excellent characterizations to set the mood and stage the story in just a short excerpt. Love all your books and this promises to be a doozy. You did promise HEA for Our Dear Couple, so I will have faith, but his is going to be a bumpy ride, I’m sure. Cannot wait to read more. Hurry up, please!

  5. Wow, Abigail. You know how to turn the angst up to eleven!! But with the knowledge that Elizabeth and Darcy will have their HEA, I can handle it. I do love me a good angsty story, as long as the ending is not in doubt.

I’d love to read and review this lovely angst-fest on Goodreads and my blog if I am selected to receive an ARC. Please add my name to the hat. I may also have time for proofreading if that step of the process begins after June 20. (I’m teaching an intense online Shakespeare literary analysis class that I adore but which is both mentally and physically exhausting.)

Thanks for sharing your evil plot bunny with us. I am so excited to see how everything will turn around, especially as this engagement seems to be a love match!! Poor Darcy!!

    Warmly,
    Susanne 🙂

Oh, wow. What have you done, indeed. I could practically hear a sound track as I was reading including a loud DUN! DUN! DUN! I am having difficulty imagining how you will reach the HEA we want and will happily (?!) read the angst to get there. Thanks for sharing, Abigail. I would love to beta/ARC for this story if there is an opportunity.
PS Love the evil plot bunny photo!

Oh my, so many comments already!
I loved “The last man in the world”, because we got so much time spent at Pemberley and a considerable insight into D&E’s married life and their responsibilities as landlords.
    And now a Jessie-Story – I’m game!
Like many others here, I can’t wait to read what will happen next, but I also desperately want to know what happened beforehand for them to get into all this tangled mess. Poor Darcy has to endure so much for our romantic hearts. But you’ll make him happy in the end, you always do 🙂
So a bunker beneath Pemberley it is – why does this appeal to me so much? Is there per chance a secret stairway to the manor house? 😉

Well, I can only hope that either Andrew shamelessly lied – and in that case I’ll throw stones (not at you but at HIM and at Wickham who undoubtedly is involved somewhere in the background) – or Lydia was in “fun”-mood and presented herself to Andrew as her sister whereas the real Lizzy has no idea of such a mess and is busy regretting the manner of her refusal.
Your excerpt seems to show another excellent plot (how could it be otherwise? BUT: Please, no marriage to the wrong brother!).

You got me! I am hooked: shocked, intrigued and curious! How are you going to resolve this? I am eager to see this plot line evolve And look forward to your story. It would be the perfect distraction in these uncertain, angsty times to immerse myself in an uncertain, angsty story of my favorite characters. Stay safe and I send best wishes for your health and writing.

Wow!!! I’m interested in how this could have happened so quickly after Hunsford and how Elizabeth could allow Darcy’s brother to court her after his proposal there. Why would she allow herself to be in this position? I can imagine all types of awkwardness will ensue. And, how will you dispose of the brother that will not cause a deeper breach between and Darcy? Can’t wait to read it.
