Leap into Love – An Excerpt from Marilyn Brant

What better way to celebrate this month of love (especially one with an added Leap Day!) than to have a chance to post a story excerpt for you all & to give away a little something, too! 😛

In honor of the release of the brand new “Emma” movie (finally coming to theaters this Friday in the States!), I thought a share a snippet from my latest novel — a sweet contemporary Emma-inspired romance called The Knight Before Christmas. Obviously, this particular story is geared toward love during the Christmas season, as opposed to this month’s Valentine Fest, but I’m a huge fan of ALL holidays!!

About this novel:  When successful building contractor Austin Knightley returns to his hometown of Crystal Corners, Minnesota, after a decade away, he vows to avoid pampered and popular types like his old high-school crush Emma Westwood—the town’s biggest queen bee and self-appointed matchmaker—only to get swept into a community Christmas project she’s now organizing…

If you haven’t yet read the book, I hope you’ll like this scene from the story!

___
Emma checked the calendar. Friday the thirteenth. Oh, goody.

It was the Yuletide of course, not Halloween, but maybe the date explained why she was having her own personal nightmare before Christmas.

She’d been trying for hours to reach a woodworker, a manager, a receptionist, anybody at Don’s Fine Furnishings—but no one was answering. The voice message was a standard “we’re not available now but will get back to you soon” kind of thing, but they still hadn’t returned her calls from yesterday, let alone her urgent inquiries today.

Her emails had also gone unanswered, which surprised her even more since everyone at the company had replied so promptly to her messages in the past.

Emma wasn’t inclined toward being superstitious, but maybe the bizarre goings-on today were on account of the inauspicious date. All she needed was to cross paths with a black cat or walk under a ladder to cement her bad luck.

Of course, it was too cold outside for the average housecat to be running around, and no one with sense would set up a ladder on an icy sidewalk. So, Emma was fairly confident she wouldn’t come upon any additionally unlucky entities during her morning errands in town.

Until she ran into Austin Knightley.

Literally.

“Oooph,” he said as she slid into him with a thud at the corner of Main Street and Second Avenue.

“Oh! I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed as he steadied her and then quickly stepped away from her body as if she had a virus. “I-I wasn’t looking. My apologies.”

Despite the cold, she could feel her cheeks heating up. How embarrassing. She’d been looking at Santa standing out in front of Nick’s Toy Shoppe and returning his friendly wave when she’d rounded the corner. Of course, of all the people in Crystal Corners she could possibly run into, it just had to be Austin.

Friday the thirteenth strikes again.

“No worries,” he said with a small smile that cracked the otherwise impervious mask of his face. “This jacket is thick enough to protect me from a boulder crashing into me. You didn’t leave a dent.”

Emma swallowed, unable to keep from noticing how well he wore that jacket. Dark gray suited him. “Um, good,” she murmured. Then she paused, waiting for him to comment again. He was studying her strangely, and she couldn’t help but feel he found her wanting somehow.

Eventually, he kind of shook his head, as if dismissing her, and simply said, “Well, have a nice day, Emma,” before he stepped past her and continued on his journey.

She watched him leave and caught sight of the same store Santa waving at Austin—an extra gleam, perhaps, in the older gentleman’s bright eyes.

Austin returned the wave to the man in red, but he didn’t look back at her.

She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding and tried to think through the action plan she had for the rest of the morning.

It was only eleven fifteen but, seriously, could this day get any worse?

******

Austin was pretty sure bad things came in threes…and that had to be triply true on Friday the thirteenth.

First, his dad had taken a spill at physical therapy this morning. He was fine, overall, but a little bruised and in need of an ice pack.

Then, the candidate Austin had been most interested in hiring to manage the Twin Cities branch of his company withdrew his application because he’d accepted a position elsewhere. That left him having to go back to the drawing board and rethink the merits of the remaining applicants.

And, finally, just when he thought the day couldn’t go any further downhill, he’d run smack into Emma Westwood.

A woman who looked absolutely ridiculous on this frigid December morning.

What kind of birdbrain wore a lightweight designer cloak-like thing in the midst of a Minnesotan winter? Or a scarf that thin? (There were weird patterns on it, and he could’ve sworn it had sparkles.) Or “boots,” for want of a better word, with heels that spiked and lacked any real tread? A strong gust of wind could have toppled her over or sent her flying across the road.

But, he had to confess, she made a pretty picture surrounded by the snow-covered evergreen bushes that lined the sidewalk and all of those downtown holiday decorations.

He shook his head. Don’t go there, man, he told himself. It’s not worth it.

Hope you enjoyed the excerpt featuring my modern Emma & Knightley!

About Holiday Man: Shannon Quinn is the small-town girl who runs “Holiday Quinn” — a holiday-themed inn and resort based in scenic Door County, Wisconsin.

One winter evening, during the Valentine’s Day weekend, wealthy Minneapolis businessman, Bram Hartwick, blows into town along with the fast-falling snow. The sparks Bram and Shannon create succeed in heating up the chilly Midwestern night, not to mention plenty of holiday weekends in the year that follows…

But is their relationship only for special occasions, or might it be the elusive everyday love that neither of them thought could be found?

If you’d like to read an excerpt from that book with a Valentine’s Day scene, check it out on my website HERE!!

Are you looking forward to the “Emma” movie or been lucky enough to see it already? And just out of pure curiosity, what is your favorite holiday of the year??? I love lots of them, but my son was born in late November around the U.S. Thanksgiving, so for the past couple of decades that’s been my personal favorite <3.  xox

I am so looking forward to the new movie – though I think 2009 version will always be my favorite (jonny lee miller) I love your covers for all of your books and the Knight Before Christmas looks to be good!

    1. Patricia, thanks so much for your kind comments about my story & book covers! And I very much enjoy Jonny Lee Miller as an actor as well 🙂 .

I have read The Knight before Christmas so would like to read Holiday Man. I have enjoyed many of your books, as you know. My favorite holiday? Hard to say: my second child/daughter was born on Mother’s Day but that date changes from year to year. Both Thanksgiving and Christmas have all my children and grandchildren getting together for a family meal so one of those. Thanksgiving (if I have to select one) as I have so much to be thankful for: the country we live in, my relationship with GOD, family, my material possessions, i.e., a home to live in, warmth, A/C, food, clothing, etc. and for my friends both in the Internet and here in my immediate area. The chemotherapy drug that has kept me alive after a diagnosis of leukemia back in 1996 is a big item I have to give thanks for, also. Thanks for a chance to win one of your stories.

    1. Sheila, I’m really glad to hear that you’ve had access to that wonderfully effective chemotherapy drug! You mentioned so many beautiful things to be grateful for… I have to say, I’ve been counting my blessings a lot lately as well. 🙂 I’m also truly thankful for thoughtful readers (like you!) who’ve taken precious time to read & review my stories over the years!! Thank you so much for that. <3 xox

The new movie adaptation Emma has received rave reviews in England, and I am so looking forward to seeing it when it is released in the States. I think it would be fun to read The Knight before Christmas when the movie is released. You write fascinating and intriguing modern adaptations. Thank you for the excerpts and giveaway.

    1. Oh, Eva, thank you so much for your sweet comments about my modern novels! I appreciate your kind words so much. xox
And I’m glad you’re looking forward to the new Emma movie, too! I’m so excited to finally get to see it soon!! 🙂

I’m looking forward to the new Emma but I’m not sure when it will be showing, here. I’d really like to read the Knight Before Christmas, Marilyn! Thanks for the giveaway and the excerpts.

    1. Hi, Lynn!! And thank you for your lovely comments!
In reading the Emma film release news, it seems it will open in “select” theaters this Friday but more widely in another couple of weeks. Perhaps that will be true in Canada as well…? I hope we’ll both get to see it soon!! xox

I will probably watch the new Emma when it is eventually shown on tv. My favourite version has Kate Beckinsale as Emma.
I don’t really have a favourite national holiday so I would say it’s whenever my daughter and her family can visit from Australia. Alas with the expense now they have their two boys this isn’t as often as we would like. I’m unable to travel so can’t visit them 😱
I have The Knight Before Christmas on my list so I would love a copy of that one.

    1. Glynis, I know just what you mean about it feeling most like a holiday when you can be with your daughter & her family! My son is away at college now, and even a random day in the middle of January or September or something feels like a celebration when he’s home… <3 *hug*
Thanks so much for taking the time to visit me here and comment on my post!

Thank you for sharing both this excerpt and giveaway for The Knight Before Christmas! It is currently on my TBR List and I look forward to reading more of this story in the future. I am curious to see the new Emma movie and am definitely going to be getting out from my library when it is released on DVD. I just re-watched the Emma Mini Series that aired on Masterpiece. Hope you are doing well.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comments, Chelsea!! I’m doing all right (a little chilled, but that typical of February in Chicago, lol), and I hope you’re doing very well also 🙂 . Many thanks for adding The Knight Before Christmas to your TBR List!! I hope you’ll really enjoy the story whenever you read it. xox

What a fun excerpt and giveaway! Emma is my favorite Austen novel and I love reading variations of her story. She’s flawed, and therefore relatable. And she’s redeemed by Knightley’s love by the end of the book. I look forward to reading The Knight Before Christmas. Thank you!

    1. Katie!! 😀 😀 Thank you so, so much for taking the time to stop by, read my excerpt and leave a comment, too! I appreciate that. <3
I love what you said about Emma's character and agree with you on her flaws making her someone we can relate to… xox

I just watched a trailer for the new movie, (which thanks to you, I now know about…I don’t keep up on movies much these days) it looks good. Maybe I’ll try to go see it. Your Knightly book sounds good. I like when there is a tension between Emma and Knightly.

    1. Sarah, thanks for your lovely comments about my story — I appreciate them so much! I’m a Knightley fan & I agree with you. It’s always fun whee there’s conflict in a scene between them!! 🙂

I am looking forward to the new Emma movie … so many people seem to hate Emma and I’ve never understood why!

This looks like a real fun story, Marilyn.

My favourite holidays: when I’m in Romania it’s Easter — the whole country is decorated! When I’m here at home it’s Chanukah (I love the lights).

    1. Janis, thank you very much for your sweet comments about the story!
As for Emma, some people might not be a fan of hers initially, but I think she’s a character that grows on readers upon further reflection (at least that was the case for me!! 🙂 ) And your Romanian Easter sounds just magical… *sigh* I’ll bet it’s beautiful there, xox

I am not familiar with the story of Emma. I thank you for the excerpt. I might get to read a variation of Emma before reading the original (that had been my pattern with the JA books;)

Lovely cover .Thank you for this and the give-away.

    1. Buturot, I’m so glad you like my book cover and the excerpt!
And I love the fact that reading a variation has ignited your interest in reading JA’s originals!! How wonderful 🙂 .

I haven’t seen the new Emma, yet, but I’m looking forward to it. I think my favorite holiday is Halloween. It’s fun without any pressure. Thank you for the chance.

    1. Leeza,
I know just what you mean about Halloween!! It’s exactly as you said — fun but no pressure. Plus there’s SO MUCH chocolate, LOL!! 😀 (My favorite part!) Thanks for stopping by!

can’t wait to read the rest of a Knight Before Christmas! I also am looking forward to the new Emma movie
I love all the holidays. You always know what time of the year it is when you come to my home because I change out decorations for every holiday and even change of seasons! Of course right now I have winter, snow and just put out St. Patrick’s Day. Christmas isn’t my favorite but I have the most for it and it takes almost 2 weeks to decorate the entire house inside and out!

    1. WOW, Jen!! I’m so impressed by the time and effort you put into decorating your home! I used to be an elementary school teacher, and I spent quite a lot of time on classroom decorations and doing various holiday projects with the kids…but it burned me out from doing nearly as much at our house, LOL. I think I spent about 25 minutes (total) decorating for Christmas this year 😀 .
And thank you for your sweet comments about the excerpt!! I really hope you’ll enjoy the rest of the story <3 .

I don’t really look forward to the new Emma movie. Apart from the P&P adaption with Colin Firth I’m often disappointed by attempts to adapt Jane Austen’s books.

My favorite holiday is Easter, because it’s fun to colour the easter eggs together with my son and hide them for him.

I love your excerpt from A Knight before Christmas. It’s definitely on my list when I need a break from E&D and regency era.

I hope readers from foreign countries can take part in the drawing of the giveaway. As it is digital I’m confident.

    1. Sabrina,
YES! This drawing is open internationally!! 😀 And I’m so thrilled you enjoyed the excerpt from the story — thank you!
My son is in college now and, sometimes, we don’t get to see him for very long during the holidays
When he was little, we used to decorate Easter eggs, too, and it was such fun!! Enjoy this wonderful time with your little boy
they grow up way too fast!

Emma has never been my favorite Jane Austen but I’m excited for the movie and your “Knight Before Christmas” intrigues me! My favorite holiday will always be Christmas; the magic in the air, the lights and the special-ness of the season always get me.

    1. Dana, I’m delighted that my Knight novel is intriguing to you — yay!!! 😀 Thank you so much for taking time to read the excerpt & comment!
I love the beauty of Christmas as well…especially the lights & the carols (and the cookies!)

  1. This is a sweet excerpt, Marilyn. I’m thrilled that there is a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. I love all the other Emma movies and mini-series but my favourite has to be Romola Garai’s BBC version. I cannot wait to see the new film but it’s not showing in cinemas near me yet. Hopefully I get to see it soon.

    1. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the excerpt, Luthien!! And I know what you mean about the theaters… It’s very likely that it’ll be difficult for me to find one nearby too, but I’m hoping we’ll both get to see it soon!! 🙂

How did I not know about Knight Before Christmas!? I would love it in digital format – I know I’ll end up buying it on amazon soon. My favourite holiday is not a hallmark occasion, but rather when the clocks go forward and daylight savings starts. I love the extra light in the evenings, and it heralds that Winter is over and Summer is on its way.

    1. Michele, thank you!! Your comment made me smile as I was reading it 🙂 . I love what you said about the spring-ahead period that signals the end of winter & the coming of summer… *happy sigh* I always look forward to that, too!!

  2. It’s officially evening here & time to do the drawing!!
First and foremost, thanks to ALL of you who took the time to comment. I appreciated reading your thoughts so much! 😀
And — just because you all warmed up so many of my (chilly!!) days during this week — I’m going to draw two winning names instead of one!
    They are…
Lynn Folliott (The Knight Before Christmas)
    &
    Sheila Majczan (Holiday Man)
    Congrats, ladies!!!
I’ll message you privately tonight, but if you see this post first, please feel free to contact me with the best email address to send your book prize to you.
Enjoy, and happy weekend to everyone!!
