Freebies, ‘Coming Soon’ & A Scatterbrained Mamma

Are mothers in Jane Austen good or bad?

Good morning!

Thanks for stopping by for a chat today.

I think you’ve already guessed which scatter-brained mamma I’m thinking of.

Poor Mrs Bennet! In a time when no one had any understanding of genetics, it was regarded as the woman’s fault, and she was seen as having failed her husband, if she did not provide him with a son and heir.

And then there is Mr Collins and the entail, and a husband who would not exert himself for the good of the family, and often amuses himself at her expense.

In many ways, I think Mr Bennet does little to deserve Elizabeth’s affection, but that’s a different story. It’s her mother who tries to ensure that the girls have some security, even if she’s a nightmare in the ways she goes about it, and her concern for their welfare is mixed with a hefty dose of selfishness, and she mortifies her sensible daughters every time she opens her mouth.

As it happens, Mrs Bennet opens her mouth an awful lot in my upcoming book.

Here’s a little taster:

Excerpt from Chapter 12

“Ah, Lizzy! I was just coming up to speak with you. This way, come. Come into my chamber, we have much to discuss. You too, Jane. You always give good counsel. Now then, Hill and I have just had a good rummage through the pantry, the larder, the meat safe and the cellar to see what could be done about tomorrow’s dinner. Mercy me, I did not imagine that Mr Darcy would return so soon! The shock I had when I came home and found him in the parlour! All I could think of was the ox cheek! There was no time to rustle up anything better, not at half an hour’s notice, and there I was, struck dumb, with this spinning in my head: how am I to ask Mr Darcy to sit down to ox cheek and dumplings? I thought I should faint dead away when your father invited him to stay for dinner, with nary a notion of consulting me beforehand! Praise be, Mr Darcy had the goodness to refuse. I expect he saw me blanch. Oh, girls, this is the mark of good breeding: a gentleman from the highest circles never puts his hostess on the spot! Well, there we are. With any luck, by tomorrow night I will have done better than ox cheek. Thank goodness, we still have a good supply of fine wines, port and brandy, cheeses, dates and candied pineapple, for I shall not spend another farthing at Valpy’s. It will be inconvenient to send John further afield, but so be it. Never again shall that woman have my custom! Nor shall I waste my breath speaking of her and her confounded shop. Let us concern ourselves with things of significance. So, tomorrow’s dinner: there will be a saddle of lamb, and partridges, and venison – is Mr Darcy fond of venison, Lizzy, do you know? And what sort of fish does he favour? Oh, no matter,” she said with a wide flourish of her hand when Elizabeth could not oblige with an answer to either question. “We shan’t be able to procure it for tomorrow anyway. John brought back some carp this morning. I hope Mr Darcy is not averse to carp, if it is properly dressed. Though goodness knows if Hill can prepare it to his satisfaction. I suppose he has two or three French cooks at least.”

‘Heavens, never mind his cooks!’ Elizabeth thought with growing impatience. Yet, mindful as ever of what was owed one’s parents, she kept herself in check and evenly said, “You keep an excellent table, Mamma. No one can find fault with it, however many French cooks they might have. But pray let us set aside tomorrow’s dinner for the moment. There is something that Jane and I think you should know.”

If you’d like to know a few things too, here they come:

The title: Twists of Fate

Coming in July (fingers crossed!)

The (possibly final) blurb: What if Mr Collins were to shock Elizabeth with his base conduct at the time of his proposal, thus sending her dashing out of her house, and into the arms of Mr Darcy? What if that encounter was witnessed, and impropriety was assumed? Evil rumours, an early marriage, a dreadful misunderstanding, an old secret, and good intentions gone awry. What if the ‘I do’ is not the end, but the start of the adventure?

So, it’s a marriage of necessity, but not exactly forced. By the time they get to the ‘I do,’ Mr. Darcy is exceedingly pleased (of course 😀 ), and Elizabeth’s qualms are quickly vanishing;

Elizabeth sees Wickham for what he is very early in the story;

Darcy gets the wrong end of the stick big time and makes a BIG DEAL of it. So there is angst (of course there’s angst 😀 ), but it’s mixed with plenty of besottedness (I LOVE your word, Glynis! It’s absolutely perfect for Mr and Mrs Darcy!);

There’s a good chance that the old secret and 1-2 other things will land me in the village stocks, to be pelted with fruit & veg; (No turnips, please!!!)

Excerpts, giveaways, and the cover reveal coming soon (from 17 June).

Which brings me to the Freebies:

Some of my older covers have had a makeover, and I’m really pleased with the way they turned out. The same goes for the new sample videos, especially this one:

(I absolutely adore this Colonel Fitzwilliam, by the way. Talk about rugged manliness & not as handsome as Darcy but WOW!!)

To celebrate the new covers, The Falmouth Connection and The Unthinkable Triangle can be downloaded for FREE from the start of today, Mon 24 May till midnight PDT on Wed 26 May. Please follow the links below. (The promotion runs in Pacific Daylight Time, so it kicks in 3 hrs after this post goes live).

Thanks for reading and see you on 17 June!

I agree with your assessment of Mrs. Bennet, and you have captured her essence in that excerpt. I am excited to learn you have a new book coming soon. Very generous of you to give away these two books. I already own both because I love them, but I let my sister know so she will try your books, too.

    1. I’m so glad you liked my take on Mrs B’s babble, T C, and that you’re looking forward to my new book! Thanks for stopping by today, and for recommending The Falmouth Connection and The Unthinkable Triangle to your sister! I’m so happy you loved them!

    Can’t wait! Sounds delish!

    1. Awww, Christina, thanks so much!!

  1. I completely agree with your assessment of Mrs Bennet. When I first read the book as a teen I got on board with Lizzy’s mortification with her mother but on further rereads I started to feel for Mrs B’s situation and I am quite fond of her now. I am sure after her marriage, without the daily mortifications Lizzy would be quite fond of her too 🙂

    1. I’m so glad you agree, Ceri! LOL I love this, and never thought of it from this angle. Same here, I read P&P in my teens and felt for Lizzy, and now I feel for Mrs Bennet :)).

It must be such a roller-coaster of a relationship! Lizzy’s clever, she must grasp that the fun parent isn’t necessarily the best parent, and she must be fond of her mother and feeling guilty about mixed feelings like ‘I love you, but you drive me nuts!!’

Thanks for the exert looks like fun.
Thank you for the free books too very generous but I own them already and treasure your stories the triangle is a particular favorite. I will pre order the new one when I can cheers t

    1. Thanks, Terri! I’m so glad that the Triangle is a favourite, and that you’re looking forward to the new book! Sorry about the inconvenience, but I’m not sure I’ll put it on pre-order. The pre-order setup needs the book to be left alone for a set time before the release date, and I’m a compulsive last-minute tweaker. But, all going well, I hope I can release it around mid-July. All the best and thanks for reading!

Can’t wait to read what you’ve prepared for us!
A good dose of Starnes’ angst makes real Life sweeter.
Counting the days till the cover reveal…

    1. Thanks SO much, Alexandra, for all the encouragement, the artistic flair, the espressos and everything else!!!

Did Mrs B pause at all during that conversation
And what about the angst in this new story, high/low/medium??? My heart is all a flutter. I must read more!

    Can’t wait !

    1. “Did Mrs B pause at all during that conversation”
😀 😀 😀 Davida, I’m guessing not. I wonder if she ever stops to draw breath 😀

The angst level – I’d say low to medium, but what do I know? 😀 I might be tempted to class it as low-angst because I know what’s happening. But it’s safe to say that it’s definitely less angst than in the Unthinkable Triangle, Mr B’s Dutiful Daughter or The Journey Home to Pemberley.

Thank you, I’m so glad you’re looking forward to more. Several long excerpts coming up! No Mrs B, just D&E D&E D&E. Hope you’ll like the snippets, and the full story too. Take care and thanks for reading!

Poor Mrs Bennet! Trying to compete with non existent French chefs! Myself I wouldn’t have minded the stew and dumplings 😉.
I’m afraid it may be only your gratitude for my gift of besottedness for your use that will save you from the turnips! Hopefully the angst levels won’t be more than I can bear?
At least Elizabeth isn’t totally taken in by wicked Wickham and is definitely more receptive to her husband when they marry?
I’m amazed that you’re publishing a new book already without me knowing anything about it and I’m really looking forward to it! 🥰
I have all your books but anyone who doesn’t have these should definitely take advantage!

    1. Thanks for checking out the post, Glynis, and for this lovely chat!

LOL I wouldn’t mind the stew and dumplings either.

My gratitude for your gift of besottedness is HUGE, but I’ll be sure to wear a helmet in case of turnips :D. I think the angst level is well within the legal limits, but I can’t wait to hear what you think!

You know what, I think you might warm up to wicked Wicky in this one :))). He’s a total pain, but he has his uses. Darcy has reasons to be grateful (the ‘Thank goodness it was a turnip and not a pumpkin’ kind of grateful, but still 😉 )

Thanks for reading, take good care of yourself and see you at Pemberley soon!!

the Falmouth Connection and The Unthinkable Triangle are favorites of mine! Looking forward to this new story.

    1. I’m so happy you enjoyed them, Theresa! I hope you’ll like this one too. Thanks for reading and all the best!

  2. Loved this excerpt, Joana! (And what a crafty place to end it, leaving us wondering just what Jane and Elizabeth have to share with their mother!) Though I’m not generally a fan of Mrs. Bennet’s methods, I have great admiration for her lung capacity, for to say that many words without pause is a true feat! Congratulations on your upcoming release, and how kind of you to giveaway your two newly-adorned books!

    1. Thanks so much, Christina, for reading this and stopping for a chat!

LOL so true, Mrs B’s methods are appalling, but she wins some brownie points for her lung capacity 😀

Thank you for gifting us with your wonderful books! I fell in love with your writing from the very first pages of ‘A Remedy Against Sin’, and the treats kept coming!

All the best and lots of inspiration!

I confess, I’m curious about Valpy’s. I am looking forward to your new book, Joana. Thank you for sharing the bit on Mrs. Bennet, and good luck with the release.

    1. Thanks so much, Robin, for your kind wishes, and also your keen eye and your curiosity :)). I was wondering if I should have said something about Valpy’s. How about ‘gossip’ & ‘clowder of cats’? 😉
      Too much?
      Too little?

As “annoying” as Mrs B is – I agree it is out of concern for her daughters. I very much look forward to this new book – as all of yours. I am anxious to see your cover choice as well. Thanks for the freebies – I still needed the “Triangle”.

    1. I’m so glad you like my books, Mary! Thank you!!
I hope you’ll like this one too (and the cover 🙂 )
All the best and thanks for reading!

I’m glad it’s coming soon! Can’t wait. This excerpt showing Mrs Bennet in a dither over the dinner she serves Mr Darcy is not only entertaining, but is spot on as far as a possible conversation Mrs Bennet might have had behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I’m so glad you think it’s a good likeness, Meg :))) She’s such fun to write!
Thanks for reading this, and I hope you’ll like the rest of the story too!

Yay, so excited for another novel from you! You’ve captured Mrs. Bennet’s character spot on. She gets on my nerves but I do understand where she’s coming from and why her anxiety & nerves get to her. Can’t wait to read your upcoming novel!

“The Unthinkable Triangle” is still the most heart wrenching plot to date fir me and I’ve read so many similar plots.

    1. Thank you, Dung! I’m so glad you thought Mrs B was spot-on, and that you’re looking forward to my next! I hope you’ll like it!

And huge thanks for having a soft spot for the Unthinkable Triangle. It’s scary and heart-wrenching, but I must admit it’s one of my favourite book babies :))

Take care, all the best, and I hope you’re thinking of coming back to the UK someday soon!

Great excerpt Joana and a perfect example of Mrs Bennet’s way of speaking.
Knowing your books I’m not surprised Darcy will get it wrong, you just can’t help yourself torturing the poor guy 😈
Looking forward to to a new book from you. ❤️

    1. LOL Kate, I really can’t help myself. I keep wondering why, but I haven’t managed to find the right answer yet 😀.
I’m so glad you think I struck the right note with Mrs Bennet. I hope you’ll like the full story. All the best and thanks for reading!

  3. Did Mrs. Bennet draw breath at all during this speech? No wonder she gets light-headed and needs her salts so frequently!! LOL!! 😀

    1. PS Thank you for the books, Joana!! I have many of your books, but not these two. 😀 And the excerpt was amazing!! 😀

      1. LOL I dread to think just how much of the Bennets’ income is spent on Mrs Bennet’s smelling salts 😀😀
I’m so glad you liked the excerpt and that you downloaded the books! Hope you’ll like them too. Thanks for reading and for stopping by for a chat!

Ohhh, I love the sound of it all! Looking forward to reading it! I adore stories that have ODC coming together early. I hope the angst doesn’t kill me .

    1. Thank you, Marie! I’m so glad you’re fond of stories where D & E come together early! So am I, I must admit. It’s so lovely to imagine them having an earlier start on fixing whatever needs fixing in their relationship, especially when they’re thrown together 24/7 and they have to find a way to live together and work things out. And preferably not let dastardly Wickham get in the way (he bores me silly with his antics 😀 ).

I hope the angst is manageable. There’s far less of it than in my other early-marriage scenario (Mr Bennet’s Dutiful Daughter) and definitely less than in the scary Triangle 😉 or in the Journey Home to Pemberley.

All the best, thanks for reading and I hope you’ll like it.

I do love all your stories and so am looking forward to this newest one. Mrs. Bennet always sets a good table so that was as expected. The blurb makes this story also sound intriguing and I do love angst. She runs into his arms…must have been running very quickly so as to end up in an embrace which was considered a compromise. Thank you for sharing here and for your generosity in giving away copies of two of your stories.

    1. Thanks so much for your wonderful words about my books, Sheila! I’m so happy you loved them. And your love of angst is sweet music to my ears 🙂 😉

Hmmm, I hope it’s not a (big) spoiler if I say that the running into his arms is metaphorical, at least at first. But I thought I’d finally have some fun with a compromise scenario and a clowder of cats thinking that they’re putting Lizzy in her place, but are in fact paving her way to happiness.

Thanks for reading, dear Sheila, and all the best!

Ooooh, a new Joana Starnes book! Hmmmm…I have the feeling that Mrs. Bennet “open[ing] her mouth an awful lot” might give ME a case of her nerves, but large doses of Elizabeth and Darcy’s mutual besottedness will help cure it, I’m sure. Looking forward to reading it, as always!

    1. LOL Debbie, I hope it helps if I say that Mrs B’s mouthiness comes in bursts, in between doses of Elizabeth and Darcy’s mutual besottedness and some angst into the bargain 😉 . Thanks so much for this and sorry I didn’t see it in time! I thought that was it for comments to this post. Hope you’re having a lovely time in the sunshine. It’s chucking it down here again as per 😀
