Avoiding ‘Busy Nothings’

Hello, fellow Janeites! My name is Anngela Schroeder, and I am the newest member of Austen Variations.

I’ve been writing in the lovely world of JAFF for five years with six novels and four short stories published and more on the way.

My journey here began before I even realized it. Having three brothers, and no sisters, I was in the mix of competition. If my brothers could do it, I had to do it too: play second base, shoot free-throws, and catch a ‘hail Mary’ for a touchdown. I was constantly setting goals for myself because I wanted purpose and didn’t want to spin my wheels.  Therefore, I  decided to make a list of things to accomplish before I was thirty:

By age 22- Graduate College with my Bachelor’s Degree

By age 25- Graduate with my Master’s Degree

By age 26- Get married

By age- 30- Publish my first book

Everything was right on schedule!

Graduated college with a degree in English Literature– CHECK.

Master’s Degree in Cross-Cultural Education—CHECK.

Met my own Mr. Darcy and got married (a year before my goal)—CHECK

…Then life happened. Babies came, my Mom passed away, and teaching high school became a little overwhelming. Pretty soon, I was almost forty and hadn’t published a novel. I’d had interest from agents and editors, but still couldn’t break into a traditional publishing house. Then one Christmas morning, unbeknownst to me, my life would change forever.

I was a little underwhelmed after opening the Kindle from my husband. He knew I preferred the feel and scent of paper books, and that an e-book was almost sacrilege. Ignoring the fluttering of my heart and having no compassion for my poor nerves, he created my account, added a gift card, and instructed me to go sit down and start reading.

An opportunity to escape for a few hours?

Deal! Typing in “Pride and Prejudice” not only lead me to the obvious book from our dear Jane, but it opened up a door into a world I could only dream about! What were all these titles? Who were all these amazing authors? What was this hidden society of Jane Austen Fan Fiction?

I began my addiction with ‘One Thread Pulled’ by Diana Oaks, and like all drugs, I was hooked! Next came Kara Louise, Joana Starnes and Elizabeth Adams. I couldn’t stop, and often found myself going to bed early just to escape on a new adventure.

It was while reading one night that I thought, “I could do this! Writing about Darcy and Elizabeth would be amazing! Giving them new roads to their happily ever after? DREAM. COME. TRUE.” But, where to begin?

A few weeks later a contest was advertised by Meryton Press for short stories. “A Winter’s Awakening” was penned in a few days, and was sent in with fingers crossed, not imagining I would be one of the winners. I called for Hill to bring my smelling salts when the email came congratulating me! I could finally check published author off my list.

Since then, Jane Austen has taken over my life. I can’t have a conversation or meet someone without identifying them as one of Jane’s characters. From students, colleagues and even people in the checkout line at the grocery store, everyoneis analyzed and found to be either lacking or someone I’d like to have a cuppa with.

In my professional world, I teach Pride and Prejudice to my AP British Lit Seniors. At first, they struggle to find a connection to the story, but soon see their own sarcastic selves in Mr. Bennet.

My Creative Writing Club holds a Jane Austen Ball every year with historically accurate musicians and a caller who both donate their time. The book truly comes alive as my kiddos laugh and stumble their way through the Allemande and Scoth Reel.

In my personal life, I am raising three sons who discuss differences between modern society and those of the Regency period, while still tackling running backs and recovering fumbles. Luckily, my history teaching husband enjoys Jane’s world almost as much as I do, although he’s losing patience with my penchant for new ball gowns.

How do Jane Austen’s works filter into your own everyday life? I can’t wait to hear!

In the past three years I’ve read P and P fanfic daily and sometimes nightly. It’s allowed me to decrease anxiety from a DNA reveal of infidelity to cancer surgery and COVID lockdown in between. I especially like the historically correct ones that not only portray the society correctly, but also portray the main characters accurately. Lizzy has to be witty and intelligent; mature for her age 20. Darcy has to be aloof at first but a warm and generous soul underneath his protective facade. I have enjoyed some modern takes on the story, but in general I prefer the ones set in early 19th century England. I do not like plots with too many overused turns such as kidnappings, injuries, or illnesses. Let the problems be more internal than external.

    1. Thank you, Meg. I’m so grateful JAFF has been a balm to your soul these last few years. I too love a good early 19th century Darcy and Lizzy. Their relationship seems to evolve more naturally to me that way. 🙂

As a retiree I not only read as one way to keep my mind sharp but also have a goal of writing reviews for every story. I read close to 300 books per years so that is a lot of time on my Kindle (PC app as well as the separate Kindle). I also dedicate time daily to exercises due to age and conditions, i.e., open heart surgery, remission from leukemia which makes me feel tired due to chemotherapy, etc. My entire family knows about my love for JA but I cannot seem to get anyone else to read her stories so I turn to the JAFF community on GRs and blog friends. Thanks for sharing your story and your talents with us.

    1. Thank you, Sheila. Your book count is awe inspiring! Also, thank you for including my latest novel, “A Life Worth Choosing” into the list of 300 this year. Your review on Goodreads was so thoughtful. Happy reading. 🙂

And I am so glad you entered that contest at Meryton Press for “Then Comes Winter” anthology because that’s how we first met, and our friendship took off from there! All because of dear Miss Austen.

    1. I count my lucky stars! 🙂

  1. Anngela, I loved learning about how you came to Austenesque fiction! And I especially loved learning more about your wonderful family. I’m so thrilled you’re a part of Austen Variations! And oh, how lucky your AP lit students are, to have you as their guide into the world of Elizabeth and Darcy! Welcome!

    1. Thank you, Christina. So excited to be here! 🙂

Many congratulations on achieving your goals! With such success as well! Amazing.
I first found JAFF 7 years ago and haven’t looked back since. I adore stories about Darcy and Elizabeth and since I retired in 2016 I spend so much more time indulging my obsession!
I do love your stories and the photos you share, I’m so happy that your family supports you in this and I especially loved the photo at Chatsworth.
Good luck in all you do and happy writing.

    1. Thank you, Glynis, for all your support and help, especially with “A Life Worth Choosing.” Chatsworth is my happy place! 🙂

Your discovery of JAFF sounds just like mine. Knowing a sequel was attempted for Gone with the Wind, I wondered if anyone had ever attempted one for P&P. I was amazed at what I found! I haven’t stopped reading since, averaging a book per day. Being mostly homebound, I’m grateful for the discovery. Welcome to AV! I loved A Lie Universally Hidden, A Life Worth Choosing, and The Goodness of Men.

    1. Thank you, Marie. I appreciate your kind words. 🙂 I remember reading Scarlet when I was younger after my mom brought it home from B. Dalton. We definitely are kindred spirits! 🙂

Welcome! Although always being a avid reader, I was introduced to Jane Austen by my wonderful 10th grade brit lit teacher (who had a thing for Shakespeare too) and then had to read everything Austen. I didn’t find JAFF for many years after that when I stumbled upon a book in my library by Abigail Reynolds. Then I found this site 3 years ago and never looked back. Now in my 40’s (do I admit this, jeez time flies!) I devour everything I can and would read more if I could retire now or just not sleep! Some family and friends think I am a bit nuts, but at least my mom and rabbit Missy enjoy our Jane just as much and I can share with them. I too love a “real” paper book over a kindle, but of course enjoy both. My mom can’t use e-readers because screens bother her (medical issue, long story) so we often have 2 copies of everything in print and ebook so we can both enjoy (or so I can have my choice!)

    1. Thank you, Jennifer. And own that 40! It’s the new 20, right? 🙂

What a delightful post. I can relate as I remember my first JAFF and have read literally thousands of JAFF stories on Goodreads. Yeah, it is an addiction. There are several JAFF authors living in my state of KY and Louisville has hosted JAFF events. I’ve not been able to attend but I’m proud of the fact they host occasionally. I love your work and wish you well in your second career. Like Sheila, in a previous comment, I’m also retired and love reading. I’m also a full-time caregiver for my husband. Reading Austen-inspired stories is just the coolest thing to do. Blessings on your future work. Stay safe and healthy.

  4. Glad to see you here at Austen Variations, Anngela 🙂 My introduction to JAFF was almost exactly the same as yours; a kindle as a gift I didn’t really want, and when I went to download my favourite Austen books I found that there were variations, alternate points of view and sequels and my TBR list has never been remotely achievable ever since! I’m looking forward to reading your posts here.
