“Fitzwilliam Darcy in His Own Words” is Now in Audio!

ATTENTION AUDIOPHILES! I’m so excited to tell you the news: Fitzwilliam Darcy in His Own Words is now available in your favorite format! And the best news is that it’s in the actual voice so many of you have come to recognize as the personification of Mr. Darcy: the voice of the incomparable Harry Frost!

I think Fitzwilliam Darcy in His Own Words is especially suited to audio, too. Since the entire story is told from Darcy’s perspective, as if he were speaking just to you!

Here’s a couple of Harry’s comments about the book:

“I’m having a great time with it. It’s a real pleasure reading what is effectively a monologue in character as
a change to an omniscient third person narrator; it’s much more fun to act… I very much like your Darcy, and I think that’s definitely right.”

The last bit was referring to striking the the right balance between playing Darcy too cold and horridly aloof or too heroically perfect from the start.  I thought about that a lot as I wrote, actually. And it’s a little trickier when he’s telling his own story, because no one can be completely objective about their own thoughts, words, and deeds. He tells us what he believes to be true, presumably, but WE ALL KNOW that he’s sometimes wrong!

These were my instructions to Harry for how I wanted the title  character voiced in Fitzwilliam Darcy in His Own Words:

Although there will be occasions for extremes (Darcy sounding gruff, arrogant, even ridiculous), he should generally be slightly stiff but mostly relatable. He’s flawed and socially awkward, but highly principled and always doing what he (sometimes mistakenly) believes is right. I actually had in mind as I wrote that he might be on the very high-functioning end of the autism scale – just a hint of the guy in “The Rosie Project,” if you’re familiar with it.

(Harry wasn’t, but maybe you are. Great book!)

I hope I struck the right balance writing Darcy. I’m sure you’ll agree that Harry did a great job voicing him and all the other characters too!

So that’s a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at the process of getting an audiobook made – a cooperative effort between author and narrator. Now it’s ready for you. HAPPY LISTENING!

FITWILLIAM DARCY in His Own Words is available through Amazon in paperback, Kindle, KU, and now Audio! In case you missed it, you can read the blurb and the slightly shocking prologue here!

Oh you know I’ve been anxiously awaiting this since I read the book. I just used my last credit to get it! (Ignore the bad rhyming.☺️). Will start listening asa I finish my current read. I know Harry won’t disappoint! Congratulations Shannon!

    Shannon,

This was fascinating to me. I have listened to many audiobooks and I never really thought that the author would have instructions for the reader. It makes total sense, I just never thought about it before. You have enlightened me. Thanks. I am looking forward to reading this one.

    1. Glad you enjoyed this mini-insight into the process, Colleen. I know in some cases the author has little say in the audio production, but I’ve been able to have lots of input – in choosing the narrator, giving instructions, and reviewing the final product before publishing. Hope you enjoy the book!

  2. Your writing and Harry Frost’s voice — so sounds like a great combo! Congrats on the audiobook release, Shannon!

Congrats on your newest release and on scoring with Harry Frost for narration!!! When I saw that Harry would be Darcy (he is) I screamed! Yes, I really did. This woman couldn’t wait so I read the book on Amazon and watched closely for the audio release to drop. Loved the book. Adore Harry’s narration. I’m attempting a s-l-o-w read/listen for the audio version and savoring every little bit.

Thank you so very much for Darcy’s part of the story. Always enjoy reading his version of things and hearing his bantar with his friends. Especially Fitzwilliam. No spoilers so I’ll just send a great big THANK YOU!

    Blessings,
    Chris
