Hi, all! I’m Jennifer Altman and I am thrilled to be joining the team here at Austen Variations!
For those of you who haven’t come into contact with me somewhere in cyberspace, I’m relatively new to the Austenesque universe, having published my debut novel To Conquer Pride this past November.
To tell the truth, sometimes it’s still hard to believe that I’ve crossed that invisible line between “JAFF reader” and “JAFF author.” Six months ago, I was on the outside looking in. Now, somehow, I’m on the inside looking out. It’s surreal to think that I’m suddenly keeping company with so many of the talented authors who introduced me to the genre and whose creative, captivating stories inspired me to write my own.
So… how did all this happen?
I think the best way to describe myself when it comes to both writing and Jane Austen is: late bloomer.
Like many of you, my first introduction to Austen came through the 1995 BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice. Oddly enough, I can’t remember actually watching that series for the first time… it’s as if it’s always been a part of my DNA. But I do know that it was this movie adaptation that inspired me to begin reading Austen’s works. I have since read all of her completed novels (and seen countless film adaptations of each), but somehow, it still wasn’t enough. I always wanted MORE.
Then, one day about six years ago I was browsing through a bookstore and stumbled across a sequel to Pride and Prejudice.
Curious, I opened the cover and started reading… and was immediately hooked. Needless to say, I purchased that book, and then continued to snap up everything I could find that was related to P&P. The day I went to the Kindle store and typed in “Pride and Prejudice variations,” I felt like I’d won the lottery! It wasn’t long before I was devouring Austen-related novels at the rate of a couple of books per week—and I don’t see myself stopping any time soon.
Interestingly enough, my pursuit of publication didn’t start with Jane Austen related fiction, at least not initially.
Unlike many authors, I was never someone who dreamed of becoming a writer – any more than I dreamed of becoming an astronaut or a neurosurgeon or a fashion designer. I had always been a great reader, and I could string a sentence together, but I never thought I had what it took to actually write a novel. However, around the same time I was discovering Austenesque fiction, I was hit with the idea for a children’s book and decided to give writing a go. One year later, I had the draft for a middle-grade novel, and about four years after that, I was in the query trenches submitting it to literary agents. I guess all I’ll say about that experience is that querying is not for the faint of heart, and my writing aspirations might have died then and there if it wasn’t for a lovely author who was mentoring me at the time. After listening to me whine about my rejections, she told me that the best thing I could do was to write something new. “Don’t even think about publication; just write something that makes you happy. Something that’s solely for you.”
And suddenly, I knew exactly what it was I wanted to write. A few years later, To Conquer Pride was born. And while I’m still hoping to go back to writing for children someday, for now I’m having too much fun in Austen’s world, so I think I’ll stay here a while longer if people will have me.
Lightening Round:
- Favorite Jane Austen novel: Pride and Prejudice, with Emma coming in a close second.
- Favorite Austen film adaptation: 1995 BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice.
- Number of years reading JAFF: Six.
- Number of years writing: Nine.
- Number of books written: Three. (In addition to To Conquer Pride, I’ve written one picture book and one middle-grade novel, both unpublished).
- Number of years it took to write my debut: Three. (Yes, I’m slow).
- Currently working on: Another P&P variation.
- Favorite genre to read (besides JAFF): I read pretty widely, but lately I’ve been hooked on historical romance.
- Interests besides reading and writing: Film, food, theater, travel, historic houses, period dramas, and all things British.
Thanks for stopping by to learn a bit about me and my path to publication. I look forward to sharing more about writing, Austenesque fiction, and other random ramblings in future posts. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!

Loved “To Conquer Pride”! So happy you crossed the Bar and looking forward to the next novel soon, please.
Thank you so much, Cheryl! I’m writing as fast as I can! 🙂
I really enjoyed reading your personal JAFF history, Jennifer. Really proud on your behalf that you made that ‘cross-over’ to becoming a writer. I have your book in my TBR list to read soon. Wishing you all the best, with this success of this book and with the book you are working on. That’s exciting.
Thank you, Michelle! And thank you for your interest in To Conquer Pride! I hope you enjoy the book whenever you get to read. 🙂
Hi Jennifer I must second Cheryl’s comments another novel please . I am always looking for another favorite author I particularly like to read books again. Welcome to the site it is endlessly entertaining.
Hahaha! Thank you, Terri! I’m doing my best, but I’m still rather slow, I’m afraid. But I know the feeling. I always wish my favorite authors would write faster! 🙂
FYI, I did just release To Conquer Pride in audiobook form, and my narrator (Stevie Zimmerman) did such a fantastic job! Even if you’ve already read the print version, I highly recommend the audio. Stevie truly brings the story and characters to life in a whole new way.
Congratulations on joining the lovely folk here at Austen Variations, Jennifer! This was the first Austenesque site I discovered back in 2014, just after they’d launched. As you know, I love your debut novel. I’m thrilled to hear that you’re working on another.
Thank you, Anji! You were one of my earliest readers (I think you might have been second only to Joana). 🙂
Thanks for all of your support (and for helping to catch all of my glaring Americanisms). The book wouldn’t have been the same without your help.
Have a fabulous time in the world of JAFF, Jennifer, and congrats on joining Austen Variations, it’s wonderful to see you here!
I loved ‘To Conquer Pride’ and can’t wait for your next.
Write, write, write and give us more sweet moments with Darcy and Elizabeth!
Thank you, Joana! TCP might never have been published if it wasn’t for your support and encouragement. Thank you for being my unofficial JAFF guru, a fantastic mentor, and an even better friend. <3
So excited to be following in your footsteps in all things Austen. 🙂
It was a delight from the word go & from the first email, Jennifer. Loved chatting to you about TCP and everything and it’s wonderful to be your friend. Have a great time writing JAFF, and best of luck!!
Congratulations on being at Austen Variations. I will have to read To Conquer Pride. It is on my very long TBR.
Thank you so much, Debbie! I hope you enjoy the book. FYI, I just released it in audiobook if you like that format. My narrator did an amazing job!
I have read and enjoyed To Conquer Pride. Congratulations on joining the authors here and good luck with your writing.
Thank you so much, Sheila!
Jennifer, I think we are sisters that were somehow separated at birth!!
Like you, I came to writing in my later years and even though my husband had said for YEARS I should write a book, I thought he was crazy. Like you, I came across a P&P variation in a book store and devoured that trilogy like a kid with candy at Hallowe’en. And, like you, when I stumbled across the genre #JAFF – I fell in love. Also, like you, I’m a slow writer. Others can bang out a novel or two (or three, or four) in a year, but one a year is about all I can handle.
Congratulations for joining the Austen Variations team. Congratulations on the publication of your debut #JAFF novel and best wishes for continued success.
Soul sisters! 🙂 Thank you so much, Sue! And LOL about banging out several books a year. I’d be thrilled to be able to bang out one! My first novel took me 5 years (mostly because I was clueless and needed to learn craft from the ground up), and my second took 3 years… So, at least I’m moving in the right direction!
Thanks Jennifer for sharing your writing journey. My introduction to JA was also the 95 production and it continues to be my favorite. Hundreds of fanfics later, I’m attempting to write my own. Undoubtedly I’ll self publish and skip the trauma of rejection for I really write for my own pleasure. Best wishes for your continued success!
Thank you so much, Meg! And congratulations on your own WIP. I mostly wrote To Conquer Pride to entertain myself. I got to a point where my favorite authors weren’t producing novels fast enough, LOL! I wasn’t even sure I’d try to publish it, but I had some lovely people encourage me and I’m so glad I took the plunge. Looking forward to reading your book one day. 🙂
So excited you are here! We are going to have obscene amounts of fun 😍. Congratulations on the new audiobook and I can’t wait to see what you are cooking next!
Thank you, Nicole! I’m very excited to be here! And the audiobook probably wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for you. 🙂 I hope you enjoy it when you finally get a chance to listen.
I can’t wait to listen to it! It will be my treat to myself after Nefarious is off my desk 🥰
Delighted to have you join us here! Your story in discovering Jane Austen is very similar to mine! You’ll be a great addition here!
Thank you! I think many people have similar stories. 🙂 So happy I eventually discovered both JA and JAFF, even though it took me a while.
Welcome, Jennifer! Thrilled to have you with us!
Thank you so much. Leslie! I’m thrilled to be here!
Congratulations and I am thrilled to see you here at Austen Variations! I loved ‘To Conquer Pride’ and look forward to your next book. Yes, I was sunk, hook, line and sinker after watching the 1995 adaptation too! I have never looked back!
Thank you so much, Carole! I’m so happy you enjoyed the book. I’m looking forward to my next book too… I just wish someone else would do the work of getting it out of my head and onto the page, LOL!
Welcome, Jennifer! It’s delightful to have you here and to hear your story!
Thank you, Abigail! Your books were some of the first Austenesque variations I read and one of the reasons I became addicted to the genre. Funny story: I still remember when Alone with Mr. Darcy came out… I think I had finished my first draft of TCP (or I was still working on it). When I saw the premise for AWMD (trapped in a cottage during a blizzard), I was like: “Oh, no! Now nobody will want to read mine because she’ll do it so much better.” LOL! I’m glad I pressed on anyway. 🙂
It’s lovely to see you in the Austen Variations line up Jennifer. I loved To Conquer Pride so I’m happy you decided to leap from reader to writer!
So many people have been inspired by the 1995 series and by the 2005 film. These are my two favourite versions which I watch as often as possible.
There are so many people using the names Darcy and Elizabeth just to sell books so it makes it even harder for new authors who actually know the characters they are writing about and take the trouble to make them authentic. Congratulations on your success!
I am looking forward to your new book.
Thank you so much, Glynis! I really appreciate the kind words. And I’m very glad I decided to take the leap from reader to writer as well. 🙂
Delightful post. Congratulations and best wishes for your continued success!
Thank you! 🙂
Congratulations and welcome to the group. Looking forward to your stories.
Thank so much, Jen! 🙂
Welcome, Jennifer!
I enjoyed learning about your journey and found many similarities to my own (didn’t expect to end up a novelist, first drawn to JA by P&P ’95, wrote my first novel just for my own enjoyment as your friend advised, etc.). I’m glad to have you with us here at Austen Variations, and look forward to working with you on our shared passion!
We’re practically twins! 🙂
So glad you’re writing and reading in the Austenesque world, Jennifer! You mentioned enjoying historical romances. Do you have a favorite you’d recommend?
Delightful post!
Thank you, Christina!
Regarding HR recommendations… how much time do you have? 🙂 Do you already read in the genre? I’m actually fairly new to it myself (I like to say JAFF was the gateway drug to HR for me). Two authors I really love are Tessa Dare (who actually got her start writing JAFF) and Lisa Kleypas. I definitely have favorite books by each, but both are consistently strong. But if you are just starting in the genre, the book I always recommend (because I think it is just about perfection, at least in my opinion) is Sara MacLean’s Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake. Honestly, I don’t think it gets any better than that. I know everyone has different tastes, but I feel like if you don’t like that book, you just don’t like historical romance. 🙂
How does one obtain your book?
Author
Hi Pamela,
The Kindle edition, paperback, and audiobook are all available through Amazon. The ebook is also available through Barnes and Noble (Nook), Apple, Kobo, and pretty much anywhere else ebooks are sold. 🙂 The audiobook is also available through Audible and iTunes. Just search the title: To Conquer Pride. 🙂
Thanks for your interest!
Jennifer
Welcome! To both this blog and the land of authors. Making the switch is a little surreal at first, but then it’s the best ride of your life. 🙂
Thanks, Elizabeth! I’m having a great time so far. 🙂
It’s lovely to meet you, Jennifer!! I hope to read your debut novel and more of your work as you write and publish more. 🙂
Eons ago, I worked for a major publishing company (as a lowly bookshop clerk), and seeing the beautiful children’s books in progress, especially the incredible original artwork, inspired me.
I hope to also write JAFF after years of reading it and writing some fairly popular fanfics in an entirely different fandom which are posted on FF.net and Wattpad. I started writing fanfic because I loved the characters in a wildly popular book/movie series, but I didn’t care for the writing and definitely didn’t like the plot. Once I have more time, I hope to settle in and commit my JAFF plot ideas to paper/screen.
Thanks for this wonderful introduction, Jennifer!! And welcome to Austen Variations!! 😀
Warmly,
Susanne 🙂
Thanks so much, Susanne! I hope you enjoy the book if/when you get to read. 🙂 I actually just released the audiobook as well, if that’s something that’s of interest to you. My narrator did a phenomenal job with it.
Best of luck with your own writing! My advice is to just dive in if you have something you want to write. Don’t wait for the perfect time, because there probably will never be a perfect time. 🙂 Even if you only write a handful of sentences a day, you will eventually have a book. Just keep going.
Thanks again for the warm welcome!
Best,
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer. I don’t usually read blogs as I don’t really ‘get’ them, but when I saw you had joined Austen variations, I clicked on the link. I’m sure (I hope) you’ll remember me from comments I have made on some of your posts and the review s I have left for To Conquer Pride: lately for the wonderful audio version of this amazing book.
Your story regarding your history with JAFF and anything relating to JA rings lots of bells with me, except the stories I have written over the years have never gotten to the stage of completion, and I certainly have never thought about publication in the world of ebooks; I wouldn’t even know how to get started with that process, even if I had a finished product.
Anyway, just wanted to touch base with you again; I really enjoyed reading your contribution to Austenvariations and am proud to categorise myself as one of your biggest fans…perhaps the biggest. 😁🤗
Hi Lesley!
Of course I remember you! Believe me, I don’t have so many “fans” that I could forget any of them, LOL! Thank you so much for your kind words, and for your lovely review of the audiobook for To Conquer Pride. It was the very first one. 🙂 I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Stevie really did a wonderful job. I thought it was going to be weird listening to my own words read aloud but Stevie really brought the story to life in a whole new way. I’m also so glad you popped over to the blog to say hello. Regarding your own writing, I say: Go for it! I didn’t know if I could do it either when I first started, but you never know unless you try. If you think you have an idea for a story, just start writing and see what happens. There’s plenty of time to figure out the publishing bit later on. 🙂
Best of luck with everything, and please stay in touch! I’ll be blogging here about once per month, so I hope you’ll continue to drop in to read my posts.
Best,
Jennifer
