Are you all looking forward to the royal wedding tomorrow? I have been working hard on my new release which will be available very soon-hurrah! I’m in the finishing stages, so now I can afford to spend some time relaxing in front of the television. I’ll be watching the ceremony – eating and drinking too much, and oohing and aahing over the outfits. Love all the pomp and circumstance. Megan and Harry seem very much in love; she has definitely found her prince charming.
But sadly, in my latest book, Elizabeth Bennet’s fairy-tale has turned into a nightmare, and her happily ever after is in doubt. Have a read of the blurb and the first chapter below.
The Events at Branxbourne
Lady Lambert, or Elizabeth Bennet as she was once known, appears to have made the perfect match. Having refused Mr Darcy’s proposal of marriage at Hunsford, she is now married to a viscount. Yet beneath her fine clothes beats a heart filled with regrets. Dark secrets lurk in every corner of her elegant London townhouse, and while she might have many excellent and numerous carriages at her disposal, they all seem to take her places she does not truly want to go.
Into her, now desolate, existence comes Mr Darcy again, a changed man, a better man, the very best of men, and still very much in love with her. Is it all impossible? She ought to resist him, yet she cannot stay away. Theirs is a dangerous, scandalous love that proves impossible to resist.
In an age when women are owned by their husbands, can a wife escape a man she has come to loathe, and when there is blood on her hands, how will Elizabeth explain herself?
The book will be released on, or soon after the 2nd June and will be up for pre-order on 22nd May, and a short blog tour will begin on the 2nd June 2018.
For now, here’s the first chapter of The Events at Branxbourne…..
Branxbourne House, Nottinghamshire
September 1817
ELIZABETH
Rationality fails me. Everything fails me, even the ability to panic. My mouth opens, my throat and chest contract as if to scream, but no sound comes. Is it any wonder I am numb and my mind empty? This sorry end, I could hardly have predicted; therefore, I know not how to act. Ridiculously, my chief concern is for the fine fabric of this dressing stool. My bloodied hands are gripped around the edges of the seat, no doubt staining it, and while I am sorry to be the cause of its ruination, I cannot move. The stool caught me, afterwards, when I fell back in shock, and I have not moved since.
Yet moments before, my limbs were busy, fast, and furious in their anger, and powerful too. They have managed a murder, taken a life. My husband, my lord, my master—his legs twisted one around the other in an odd manner—lays motionless at my feet.
We are three years married; three years of misery and disharmony. Never attuned to one another, never in step, not until now. Only in this final moment are we together, both so terribly still, so horribly silent.
Dense, crimson blood flows from a cut at the back of his head, working its way through his thinning, blond curls. It is not the bright red, watery blood of an accidental injury—the kind made by a scrape or a fall or the prick of a misplaced sewing needle. This blood will not be easily wiped away nor pressed into nothingness by a wet handkerchief. It is dark, the colour of violence, and there is far too much of it. It has its own peculiar smell—what am I reminded of? Something decaying. Rusted iron, perhaps, or rotting apples?
It runs down the side of his pale face to pool on the highly polished floorboards beneath him. I wish it would stop there but it does not. A small stream begins to form, flows towards my feet, and points me out, accuses me. “There she is. This girl here in the pretty beaded shoes. She is the murderess.”
They are shoes never meant for my ignorant, country feet. I cannot fill them, was not destined for this role. I am no viscountess. I fool no one, least of all myself. Society will be proved right. How they will all crow in triumph and tell one another they are not surprised. This, they will say, is the sort of thing one can expect when a man marries so far beneath him.
It will be printed in every newspaper; the events at Branxbourne will be spoken of at every dinner party for years to come. Future guests here, those far better behaved than I have been, might ask to see this room. For a small tip, the staff will tell them what they saw, embellishing the tale with each recount. “This is where it happened. This is the very room in which Lady Lambert killed her husband—in cold blood; and when they took her away, she was calm, just apologised for getting blood on the dressing stool, as if such a thing mattered. Poor soul had run mad, you see.”
A sound finally escapes me, a laugh, and I suppose I must be hysterical for it is not seemly at such a time, not unless I do want everyone to think me mad. That is not my design; it would not be right. I must keep some of my morals correct. My actions were born not of insanity, only anger.
There is a quiet knock; the door opens and Bassett, my little maid, comes in, her eyes wide with shock as she surveys the scene. “Oh, madam, they’ll hang you.”
She is right, but I am unperturbed at the idea. Hanging is merely falling, after all, and I have been falling for quite some time now. I am heartily sick of the sensation, of hurtling out of control, tumbling deeper and deeper, unable to stop. Something was bound to break at some stage—be it my spirit or my will, perhaps a few bones. So, it is to be my neck that will snap. What of it?
Basset, as sweet and kind a girl as ever there was, is not equal to the scene before her. She wipes her hands on her apron and looks to me, eager for instruction. When I have none to give and only offer her a dumb shake of my head, she is panicked. “I’ll fetch Mr Darcy, shall I? ’Appens he’ll know what to do.”
I remain silent as she scurries off, telling me not to move before she shuts the door behind her. As if it were possible for me to move! I am nothing but a statue in this very grand room with its beautifully turned furniture, expensive art, rich materials, and elaborately painted ceiling.
Yes, Bassett will ask him, and Mr Darcy will come. He will take masterful command; he will have a plan. Though he is the reason I began falling in the first place. Would I be sitting here with blood on my hands if Mr Darcy had not re-entered my life? Most likely I would still be in Hanover Square—alone but not a murderess, hopeless but not about to hang, desolate but not disgraced.
Mr Darcy was my downfall, yet he was well worth it. I would do it all again. To have felt the strength of his unyielding love, I will willingly hang. How can I fear Hell, when I live there already, and I will not miss Heaven, for I have felt that too. Heaven is him.
Really hope you enjoyed this teaser chapter – come over to JustJane1813.com on 22nd May for the cover reveal and some competition fun.

Geez, I do not know what to think. I do hope Lizzy can prove self defense or something other than cold blood. I never read anything with a plot like this before. I hope this is a bad dream on her part. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for reading, Donna. I do like to mix it up and have each book different from the other. It’s a wild ride for Darcy and Elizabeth this time out, but I hope you will give it a go.
I am so excited to hear that. Your books are 2 of my very favorite JA variations. I love your portrayals of Elizabeth’s wit and the dialogue. Keep up the good work – don’t compromise your standards – there are a lot of mediocre JA variations but yours are excellent.
Thank you for the kind words and for stopping by to read the extract. I really hope you will like this book
Oh heavens! I started reading and thought no, this isn’t for me. How could Elizabeth marry someone else after Hunsford?
But by the end of the excerpt? Wow!
What is Darcy doing there? And are they really having an affair? (well I must admit I would definitely be tempted!)
I know there will be a happy ending Caitlin because you would never write a D&E book without one, but I really don’t see how you manage it this time.
Can’t wait to find out. 🙂
Thanks Glynis. Yes, I know a lot of people will be put off reading because Elizabeth is married at the start of the story, but it concentrates very much on Darcy and Elizabeth, I promise.
I hope you will give it a go.. cheers
Married, but quite recently widowed!
Haha! Yes, very recently
Oh my!
I do not read books where one of ODC was married to another person before. I cannot bring my romantic self to believe there once was another person in their life. So upon reading the blurb my cursor hovered over the goodreads shortcut button to mark the book accordingly never to be read when I read the first line of the fist chapter. And then the second. I became anxious and read on and on. Finishing the last line there was a deep sigh (huh, that was me?) … and the deep wish for Mr. Darcy to save me – er, her. Her.
Nevertheless, I pressed the button and marked it – to be preordered and read as soon as possible. Can’t wait to be saved!
Thank you, Eru. I know there are a lot of people who feel the way you do, but I hope readers will take a chance on this book, because it is a story about love succeeding against all the odds.
I’m rubbing my hands in antecipation. Looks like very paixonate , even with the dead body. He’ll problably deserve it for making Elisabeth miserable.
Thank you, Carla. Really hope you enjoy this story. He does deserve his grisly end.
OMG! They can’t hang our Elizabeth… Wow… what a hole you have dug for her. Surely, it has to be an accident. I can’t breathe. Dang… you didn’t pull any punches on the hook… what a start… you pulled me in from the start. This has to be the most dramatic beginning I’ve ever read. Girl… what were you drinking when you wrote this? It must have been double shots or high octane of some kind. Well I guess there is no course but to blast forward and hope and pray for a HEA. I’ll just have to gird up my loins for the ANGST and suffer through. Thanks for sharing.
Gird your loins, cross your fingers, and have faith in the power of Darcy and Elizabeth. Drinking while writing? Me? Never…well, maybe the occasional snifter. I hope you will read and enjoy. Cheers.
Wow hopefully Mr Darcy knows what to do.
Mr Darcy always knows what to do! Having said that she is in a bit of a pickle. I hope you’ll give this book a go, Nancy and thanks for reading the excerpt.
OMG! I can’t wait to read more and find out everything that happened. Of course it is not my favorite thing when either Darcy or Elizabeth is married to another. But that never took away my enjoyment of a story as long as it is well written and they do get together at the end (or hopefully some time before the end, hehe). I’m afraid there will be lots of angst before they get together, but I am still looking forward to more. It sounds so different from any other of your previous books!
Daniela, thanks for stopping by to read. Yes, it is different to my other books, particularly as written in first person. It’s told completely through the eyes of Darcy and Elizabeth and focuses only on them.
Such an intriguing beginning to your new book! Can’t wait to read the rest of the story. I love all of your books and maybe this one will be the best of all.
Thanks Joan for the kind words. I love this story, I has been in my head for years, so it’s wonderful to be able to share it at last.
Let me see if I’ve got the facts straight…..Lizzy has killed her husband….her maid is assuring her Mr Darcy will come up her aid…..she has no love for her husband, doesn’t regret killing him as life with him was hell….especially now that she’s witnessed Heaven in the arms of another…..
How are you going to rectify this situation,Caitlin???
A HEA for ODC??
How is one to be manufactured???
I can’t begin to imagine but am very intrigued at the extenuating circumstances at play, which forced Lizzy’s hand to commit the unthinkable! Well done!! You’ve certainly succeeded in grabbing our attention, leaving us shocked and curious in equal measure!!
Yes, Mary, exactly right. I’m glad you enjoyed this first chapter. My challenge was to put Elizabeth in the worst situation ever and then try and get her out of it.
Thanks and I hope you enjoy the rest of the book…
OMG!!!! Love it!! Wow!!! The angst!!! I will be purchasing this book!!! I love all of your books. Now, I have requested my family to leave me be for my birthday (June 7th) so, I can read!!!!! Excellent.
Thanks Shelley, my birthday is in June too, and like you, I’d love to spend it reading. I really hope you’ll enjoy this book. It’s a rollercoaster, I think.
Words fail me…what an absolutely ‘outside of the box’ premise that I can’t wait to read!!!! Then again, anything you write I will read for I know it will be brilliant! Oh Darcy you certainly have your work cut out for you to save your Elizabeth!
Carole, thanks so much. Yes, it is ‘out of the box’. I hope it will not put people off. Thanks so much for reading this excerpt and I hope you will enjoy the whole story.
The only marriage I won’t read it one between Wickham and Elizabeth. I have even read one in which Elizabeth is a widow after being married to Collins. Your name alone will have me reading this, dear author. I am sure you will somehow give us a HEA…I trust you. And I do love angst…so…bring it on.
Dear Sheila. There’s lots of lovely angst. How wonderful that you trust me. I will try my best not to let you down.
Wow. What an intriguing idea! Elizabeth, unhappily married, and then Darcy comes back into her life. An absolutely brilliant premise, Caitlin!!!
Thank you for sharing this opening scene with us!! Powerful!!! Elizabeth’s thoughts here are so dire yet happy beneath it all as Mr. Darcy is fetched.
Can’t wait to see what happens next!!
Warmly,
Susanne 🙂
Thanks Susanne. It’s a tangled, complicated story, which I hope you’ll enjoy.
WOW! what a beginning! That viscount must have been a wicked man to cause our Lizzy to commit murder- or perhaps it a dream? Lizzy is a passionate woman but certainly she could have thought of another way! Being Darcy’s mistress would have been a possibility in the Regency even for a married woman. Perhaps the viscount was so possessive he wouldn’t let her out of his clutches even for a few moments? Or he abused her often physically as well as emotionally?
Meg, I cannot say too much without spoiling it for you. I hope you’ll pick up a copy and read the rest. Elizabeth has a rough old time of it, but Mr Darcy is close at hand.
Wow! What a fantastic opening! Cannot wait to read this, have loved all your previous books and this is a great scene. How did Elizabeth come to this and what of her relationship with Darcy? Can’t wait to discover the answers and eagerly awaiting the release of this book.
Thanks so much, I hope you will like this one just as much. Mr Darcy is very constant in his devotion to Elizabeth.
WOW! Now my mind is wondering as to what happened those first three years of marriage that lead to this scene. Questions will be answered and I know Fitzwilliam Darcy will have an answer and solution and if not he will call upon Colonel Fitzwilliam for helping him solve the problem. I hope all ends in favor of Darcy and Elizabeth find the love they both deserve.
I can’t wait to read this novel and no I didn’t get turned off by her being married to someone other than Darcy.
Best wishes with the novel and can’t wait to pre-order it.
MaryAnn. The colonel does play a part in this, as does his son’s nursery maid – also called Mary Ann! Hope you love it.
Wow, this is most certainly a fascinating beginning for ODC. I am wondering what happened to Elizabeth wanting to marry for love?
I am glad Darcy is as attentive in his love as ever. Elizabeth will most definitely need his help, support, and love.
Thanks for the excerpt. June feels a long way off after getting drawn into this story. Is going on the TBR pile.
Hi Patty, thanks for stopping by to read the excerpt. I really hope you enjoy the story. I think anyone who loves a constant Darcy will like this.
Caitlin, I love your writing. This is exactly the stuff I love to read, things I cannot envision. That’s why I leave it to the professionals, these wild spins. Can’t wait to read. Hopefully this is all a misunderstanding or, at the very least, wholly justified on Lizzy’s part. Defending herself from violence? Lizzy cannot hang! Darcy to the rescue!
Thanks Jami. It is not an easy book to read at times, Elizabeth and Darcy are put through the ringer, but I hope you will like it.
Intersting story line. Looking forward to its release
Thank you. I hope you will like it
Oh dear. High angst, indeed!
I have read and loved all your previous books, but if you don’t think it too much of a spoiler, I’d like to know whether Darcy and Elizabeth actually commit adultery in this book. I don’t mind a previous marriage, I can endure the angst of being in love with each other while hopelessly married to another, but I draw a line at acting on this love and desire. If you don’t like making a public statement about it, are you willing to at least privately clarify this for an anxious reader?
Hi Agnes. What I will say is that Darcy and Lizzy are forced to ponder such questions as ‘what constitutes adultery’ They have to consider and reconsider their beliefs and morals. Both of them are principled individuals, yet they are in love.
I don’t want to spoil the story, so will say nothing further. I understand people’s attachment to these characters and hope this is a sensitive portrayal.
Ooooh, Wheeeee! I need to read this one! Great first chapter. Talking about grabbing the reader’s attention! Best wishes and hope this does supper well.
Of course, I meant super well, but supper sounds good, too!
Thanks Barbara, supper does sound good too!
This gets me every single time!! I just can’t wait to read other readers’ thoughts on this heartbreaking story!!
I have not been able to get this out of my mind. In so many Perry Mason shows, the person close to the scene did not commit the murder, even sometimes when the accused thinks so. There can be an unseen third party. Elizabeth sonds shocked at herself. It sounds like a violent situation of more than just Elizabeth. Please prove she is not a muderess.
I am afraid I can say no more about Elizabeth being a murderess without spoiling the story. Thanks so much for stopping by to read this, Donna. I hope you get a chance to read the whole story
That beginning has me hooked! Really looking forward to reading this one!
Thanks Lori. I hope you enjoy it.
Somehow, I missed seeing the email for this and have come across from Claudine’s blog to read this before reading the excerpt there. Oh my giddy aunt! Now that’s what I call a hook for an opening! How can one not want to read the rest to find out out you’ve written your way (and Elizabeth’s) out of this, Caitlin. I have every confidence that you’ve managed it exceptionally well. I don’t have a problem with either Darcy or Elizabeth having been married previously and by the time this story starts, Elizabeth is, obviously, decidedly NOT married any more. At least by then, she’s come to realise that Darcy is exactly the right man for her.
Off back to Claudine’s blog now!
Caitlin, as you know, I loved your excerpt on Just Jane, but this opening chapter has made me absolutely impatient for this book! June 2nd cannot come soon enough. 🙂
Totally lost for words! Don’t like stories where ODC were married before to others, but do love when things work out to bring them together. Hanging ODG doesn’t seem to be a way to do this however. Cannot wait to read about Darcy’s plan to eliminate this problem they’re facing.
Wow this is such a gripping opening to the story! I want to know how it continues. Did Elizabeth really kill her husband or is she dazed and confused and just thinks she did when really she didn’t? So many questions! Hope it doesn’t end too badly for her. I’m a stickler for a happy ending!
Thanks Elaine. Now, you know I cant say too much without giving the story away. I hope you get a chance to read it soon
No, I’m sure you can’t lol. But I downloaded it today so I guess I’ll find out! 😀
Such a compelling and disturbing start! Where can we read the rest? I’ve looked on Amazon but it appears this book has been removed. Can’t wait to dig into this intriguing scenario and see what you have in mind for ODC!
