2020 Retrospective
It’s hard not to start this post without using one of the many now-clichés about 2020. It was a tough year for all of us in different ways, and I was glad to see the end of it and cling to the hope/belief that 2021 will be better (eventually). I’ve been reminding myself that there were bright spots to 2020, especially in my author life. That is what this post is about.
I became a published author in March when Being Mrs Darcy was released. I began my time as a JAFF writer on the boards, as many of us did. Being Mrs Darcy was my first full-length Regency story, although not the first piece of JAFF I wrote. I began posting it around six or seven years ago, so it is by no means a new story. I conceived of the plot several years before I began writing it. I’m an avid JAFF reader as well as a writer, and like many of you, I like the ‘forced marriage’ (or early marriage) trope. When I began to play with the idea of Being Mrs Darcy, most of the forced marriage stories I was seeing started after Darcy had developed feelings for Elizabeth, meaning at least one of them was not entirely opposed to the idea of them being together. I wondered what would happen if they were strangers to each other and Darcy remained full of pride. It would make their path to happily ever after more challenging, and I do like a good challenge. 😁
I’ve been absolutely delighted by the reception Being Mrs Darcy received. It’s a little nerve-wracking putting a story out there to the world to be judged, and since it was my first book, I really did not know what to expect. As 2020 was ending, and during this first week of 2021, people have been posting their ‘best of 2020’ lists, and I have been walking around with a grin on my face. In addition to making it onto the lists of individual readers on Facebook, Being Mrs Darcy has been listed on several blogs.
- Austenesque Reviews’ Favorite & Austenesque Reviews’ Reader Choice Favorite (thank you, Meredith!)
- From Pemberley to Milton’s 2020 Favorite Books (thank you, Rita)
- Babbling of a Bookworm’s Picks of the Year (thank you, Ceri)
- Austenprose Top Ten Best Historical Austenesque Novels (thank you, Laurel Ann)
It’s going to be a tough act to follow, and I already have my fingers crossed (figuratively, of course!) that my next book doesn’t disappoint.
I also published a novella in July 2020: Mr Darcy: A Man with a Plan. This was actually the first bit of Regency writing I did. I already had Being Mrs Darcy in mind, but before diving into what I knew would be a long, complicated story, I wanted to write an ‘easier’ Regency to get a feel for the differences compared to writing a modern story. In it, Elizabeth and Darcy meet up soon after the disastrous proposal at Hunsford. Darcy realises he still wants to marry Elizabeth, and—as the title suggests—develops a plan to win her. Realising she so misjudged both Darcy and Wickham, Elizabeth is confused and needs time to feel comfortable with the idea that she could safely allow herself to love Darcy.
On a related but different note, 2020 was also the year I joined Austen Variations. When I was asked if I would like to become part of this awesome group of writers, I was honoured and thrilled. It’s been just over half a year, and I’ve enjoyed being part of the group immensely—from the support we give each other, to the zoom events and sharing various posts with you, including a few vignettes.
2021 Prospective
The big news is that I have another book coming out in early April. It is titled The Recovery of Fitzwilliam Darcy. I won’t say much about it now; you’ll have to come back starting in March for the cover reveal (scheduled for Monday, March 1) and excerpts/extras leading up to the publication. If you follow me on social media, I’ll be posting about it there, too.
I continue to write and add to my list of plot ideas. I can’t say exactly when these stories will be released, but I have every expectation of there being much more to come in 2021 and beyond.

I first read Being Mrs Darcy a few years ago and was so emotional about Elizabeth. I now have the published version and it was one of my favourites. I also have Man With A Plan 🥰.
Congratulations on your success in 2020 and I’m so looking forward to your new book.

Writing some of these stories—and Being Mrs Darcy was one of them—can be a very emotional experience. I’ve made myself cry more than once. 😬 I’m thrilled that you enjoyed both stories. Thank you, Glynis.
Congratulations on the well-deserved praise for Being Mrs. Darcy. I loved both of your releases this year, and confess a soft spot for Sterling. I’m looking forward to reading your future stories.

Thank you, Robin. I have a soft spot for Sterling, too. 🙂
I’m looking forward to your upcoming book, as Being Mrs. Darcy was definitely one of my favorites of 2020. All your talk of lists made me check my subjective rating system (stars assigned right after I finish a book) for the approx. 175 books I read last year. Being Mrs. Darcy was in my top 3 of books released in 2020 and read in 2020.

Wow, that is really so flattering. I am so glad you enjoyed BMD so much. It’s going to be tough to live up to it! Thank you!
well Lucy the news of a new book is a great new year present for me. I enjoy your plotting and have both your published works and look forward to lots more. May your muse continue so I can enjoy them.

Thank you, Terri! My muse has been keeping me on my toes. 🙂
I loved ‘Being Mrs. Darcy’ and look forward to this new launch. What have you done to our Mr. Darcy? Hmmm? Did one of those many plot bunnies in your head do a happy dance in your imagination? I certainly want to read that. LOL!! Blessings in the new year. Everyone stay safe and healthy.

I live to put our dear Darcy and Elizabeth through the emotional wringer. 😂 New plot bunnies make me do a happy dance. Is that good enough? Stay well.
Congratulations Madam, a well-loved book (being Mrs. Darcy). Looking forward to your upcoming books

Thank you so much. 🙂
It was wonderful ‘zooming’ with you and all the others this past weekend. Congratulations on ‘Being Mrs. Darcy’ and receiving so many accolades. I hope to read it this winter and before you release your next book! I did so enjoy ‘A Man With a Plan’. Yes, you have had some wonderful accomplishments and positives in 2020. May 2021 grow to be an even better year!

It was great seeing you last weekend, too, Carole. I’m glad you enjoyed MwaP. Thanks!
I was so pleased when you published BMD. One of the things I loved about the premise is what you’ve highlighted here, the fact that so often in forced marriage scenarios Mr Darcy is madly in love and Lizzy doesn’t like him. Here neither of them wanted to marry and he is resentful, so it’s such a different starting point. I think I might treat myself to a hard copy of it 🙂
I’m really looking forward to your next release. I’ve read it online and it’s a great story!
I loved your story, Being Mrs. Darcy. I read it in both the unpublished and published versions and have gone back and read just certain scenes (after Darcy returns from London and after the story). I have also read your other story and thus will say I look forward to reading your newest story. Good luck with publishing that.
that should say “after the storm”…oops.
Any plans to publish The Course of True Love?

Not at the moment, but it is always in the back of my mind. 🙂 Thanks for asking.
Hi Lucy! I’m a huge fan of your works, and I believe I have read all of them that I could find on AHA or anywhere else! 🙂
I have read that you have removed all your regency era stories as you are publishing them (Can’t wait to read RoFD once you publish it!). I was just wondering if your modern stories have also been removed? Reading Pinch of Salt & it’s sequel from time to time gave me great joy, but I can’t find them on AHA. Plus, CoTL and associated stories were also novels I binged on some weekends 😀
I just wanted to know if they are still available somewhere, or if you have any plans to publish them.
All the best for 2021! You’re an amazing writer and I can’t wait to read more of your work.
Cheers!

Hello!
Thank you so much for your message and kind words. 🙂 I have removed all of my stories from AHA, really because of the unfortunate ongoing plagiarism concerns in our community. At the moment, I am not sure what the future is for my modern stories, but I am flattered that you (and others) are interested in them. Take care,
Lucy
