And now for something completely different…
Happy New Year! I’m starting it off by announcing a new book, A Pinch of Salt, which will be out in early March. (If the name is familiar, it might be because I posted an excerpt from the unedited version a couple of years ago, and some of you may have read seen it on the story boards; I posted it around 2016, if I remember correctly. Both have since been deleted.)
Unlike the other books I’ve published, this one is a modern. It is a Pride and Prejudice-Top Chef/cooking competition mash up, which might sound like an odd combination, but it made perfect sense to me as I was plotting the story. I love to cook, and I have long been a fan of cooking competition shows. Given this, I starting thinking about how some of our favourite characters would act if they were contestants in such a show. The result is A Pinch of Salt. In short, there are ten contestants—naturally including our dear couple, Elizabeth Bennet and ‘Will’ Darcy—and they are forced to spend a lot of time together, some more than others as they are eliminated one by one. Some people form friendships, others create trouble, and there is a lot of talk of food. While there are definitely serious aspects of the book, it is also meant to be somewhat lighthearted.
The book is set in Canada, where I live. The competition itself is filmed in Calgary, Albert.
For those of you who read the story on the boards, I have completely edited it—no surprise—and modified some of the challenges. In doing so, I tried my keep the spirit of the story, especially the essential aspects.
Who are the contestants?
- Elizabeth Bennet
- Charles Bingley
- Sterling Bramwell
- Colin Collins
- Will Darcy
- Anne de Bourgh
- Tom Fitzwilliam
- Caroline Hurst
- Charlotte Lucas
- George Wickham
Will, Sterling, and Tom are related. Sterling is married to Will’s paternal cousin, Rebecca Darcy, and Tom is his cousin on his mother’s side, just as in canon. They are all very good friends. Elizabeth and Charlotte live in the same small town (fictional Meryton, Ontario) and are best friends. It’s possible that Colin is overly enamoured of his boss, Catherine Hunsford, and that Anne has little to say for herself; she is one of Austen’s silent characters, i.e., one who does not actually speak in the novels.
A televised show needs hosts and judges, and for them, I went outside of Austen and to…my cats! I used the names of family cats present and past, as well as those of my daughter’s Guinea pigs. Where possible, some of their traits show up in the book’s characters. I had a lot of fun writing A Pinch of Salt. J
I’ll be back at the start of February to reveal the cover and share an excerpt. A Pinch of Salt will be released on 4 March, and in a post release week, I’ll tell you more about who inspired me when writing the ‘extra’ characters, complete with photos!
I’m so excited to be releasing A Pinch of Salt!
Thanks for reading. Have a wonderful day.

I am so very excited about this! I loved A Pinch of Salt on the boards, and I am looking forward to see what you have changed. I can see that BC might potentially be CC now. I actually watched a few cooking shows because of this story. I have wanted to read it again, and now I know it’s just a couple months away.
Thanks so much for commenting, Robin! I’m excited to be sharing the revised version of this story. 🧑🍳

I *had* to set the story in Canada! 🇨🇦 I hope you enjoy the book. I had a lot of fun writing it! 🙂
Congrats, Lucy! This sounds like such a fun book! I too love cooking competitions. Can’t wait to see your version of ODC in modern-day Canada!

Thank you, Christina, and Happy New Year! 🥳

I’m glad you’re excited! Thanks!😊
You guys keep writing these modern stories. Stop it!?!
I’m sorry… I do not like modern stories. And yet, y’all keep writing them and making me fall in love with the concept. I can’t help myself. Diamond is the worst, and now, you are adding to my frustration at avoiding modern stories.
I love to cook and have been working on mini-tarts for some time. I love seeing beautiful creme topped with fruit and a sprig of mint. They are so pretty. Raspberry mousse topped with fresh raspberries is another favorite at my church. Heavy sigh. I even make the pastry creme myself [French/Italian, chocolate, and even strawberry. It makes a beautiful parfait]. Sooooo, I yield… I want this book. It sounds amazing. I’ve watched several cooking competitions and the angst and anxiety were out the roof. I was nearly chewing my nails and I wasn’t even in the competition. Whew! After reading your comments about your competition, I nearly broke out in a nervous sweat. I’m looking forward to reading this. I wish you the best in the launch of this new work. You know I love your work. Blessings.

I admit, I like a good modern story now and again too. I don’t expect I’ll be writing more (but you never know). A Pinch of Salt is an old one—one of two moderns I posted online years ago. Otherwise, I’m busy writing Regency stories.
Your comment has made me hungry for a fruit tart. Given all the sweets I consumed over the holidays, that is quite the feat! Thanks so much for your support, and bake on! 👩🍳 ❤️
Yay!! As someone who loves cooking, this makes me so excited! I cannot wait 💜 and modern!! Idk how to communicate how excited I am. You are such a talented author and I know this is something that will be good!

Thank you so much! ☺️ I love cooking too.
Oh Lucy, a modern! I love the premise. Can’t wait to read it all!

I’m glad you like the sounds of it! 🤗
I am so excited! I loved reading this story (like all of yours) and can’t wait to get a copy. Sterling is one of my favorite characters in your books.

Hello Maria! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Sterling is one of my faves too! 🥳
Sounds like fun! I do enjoy the modern variations as well. Some are quite inventive. Your idea is completely out of left field and as an owner of several of your books and a fan, I’m pretty sure this story will fit right in with my collection. Think 🤔 I recall some of this on the “boards” of old but it escapes me right now. More coffee, yes please 😃.
Looking forward to the release and congratulations! 🎉

Thanks for your comment, Chris! I did indeed post APoS (unedited) on a story board years ago. I’m glad it sounds appealing to you! 👩🏻🍳
Congratulations, Lucy! I remember this one from a loooong time ago on the storyboards, and I can’t wait to read this new version.
Author
Thank you, Susan! I believe I posted APoS in around 2016–eight years ago! 😳 I hope you like the edited (and more cohesive) version! 🤗
I remember your story and I think I even asked about the recipes you had included and I think you responded they weren’t real dishes. (!!) Looking forward to this!

Hi Kathy! I had a lot of questions about the recipes! I remember people commenting that they were hungry when they were reading the story, and I was too. I might have been inspired to make a dish or two for dinner after writing about it this time too. 🙂
Thanks for commenting. I hope you enjoy the edited version!
