January Scavenger Hunt #5 by Jack Caldwell

Guess Who from CRESCENT CITY

Hello, everybody. Jack Caldwell here.

For my entry in the Austen Variations Jane in January Scavenger Hunt, I’m going to give you a little test. After all, it’s Friday the Thirteenth! Bruhahaha!

Now, don’t groan—the potential reward is worth it.

As you remember, I wrote a modern, JA-based trilogy about New Orleans and Hurricanes Katrina entitled CRESCENT CITY. As you can guess, this series is very close to my heart. I also have a tendency to mix characters from all of Jane Austen’s novels in my work. So, not only have I used plot lines from Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, and Emma in CRESCENT CITY, I pulled characters from all of Austen’s collected works.

However, not all of Austen’s character names work in South Louisiana. So—I changed them, and not just the last names.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to deduce which Jane Austen characters inspired the following CRESCENT CITY characters.

Simple, right? No, not really. Some of the answers are tricky. And while those who have read CRESCENT CITY will have a leg-up, guessing is encouraged.

I’ll give you the first one, because it’s easy:

CC Character Austen Character Novel
Mari Dashwood Marianne Dashwood S&S
1.     Annie Betancourt
2.    Catherine Bingley
3.    Elizabeth Boudreaux
4.    Dr. Chris Breaux
5.    Gina Darcy
6.    Jan Hill
7.    Dr. George Katz
8.    LTJG Jeremy Price, USGC
9.    Betsy Reynolds
10.  Bryan Thorpe
11.  John Waguespack
12.  Emma Weinberg
13.  LCDR Fred Wentworth, USCG
14.  Gregory “G-Daddy” Wickham

I’ll give you one clue. Each of the following novels have at least one character represented above: Emma, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Pride & Prejudice, and Sense & Sensibility.

Be careful! This list is tricky! Good luck!

Until next time, this has been the Cajun Cheesehead Chronicles.

It takes a real man to write historical romance, so let me tell you a story…

Email sent! I’ve not read your series Jack, so quite a bit of guessing involved there.

  1. You are very tricksy, Mr. Caldwell. I haven’t read this series yet (but I have very much enjoyed your Fighting Men series), but I’ve read enough excerpts to guess at most of ’em.

Thanks for this lovely giveaway! If I figure out a few more, I will e-mail you my semi-educated guesses.

    Warmly,
    Susanne 🙂
