Jane Austen’s Advent – Day 9

Mince pies, often called Twelfth Pies were an iconic food of the Regency era Christmastide celebrations. I’d love to make up a batch for you and share them over some syllabub, but since even the internet can’t accomplish that, here’s the next best thing–making them together in a virtual period kitchen!

(Just a note, even though the video title is Victorian which was after the Regency, the recipe she’s using and the cooking methods were also used during Austen’s day.)

Thanks Maria. A bit too complicated for me as I don’t like baking (or much cooking since it’s only me)
When my children were little I used to do a lot as mostly I prefer home baked cakes and biscuits to bought ones. I never made mince pies though as I don’t much like them. I certainly don’t like shop bought mince pies as the pastry is far too sweet so I don’t eat them at all.
I have read that they used to contain actual meat but enjoyed seeing them actually being made.

Lovely video, but I’ll leave the work to someone that enjoys baking! A lot of work goes into these little pies and there are a few ingredients that seem to turn off my taste buds to even want a taste.

Having leftover fruit mince from our first batch of Christmas liquor I decided to have a go at making my own mince pies from scratch this year, albeit wthout the meat. I’m no baker but I was delighted with the way they turned out appreciated by the recipients. I might have a go at the Christmas pudding next,

That is a lot of sugar! I wonder if it masks the flavour of the ox tongue…? Thank you for that video!

My mother used to make minced meat pies every Christmas and some times on Thanksgiving but it was a 9″ pie with two crusts and no meat. Lots of minced fruits from a jar labeled for pie baking.

But now with my children grown and just the two of us and me watching my diet due to health issues I have given up desserts almost all together. Only had a sliver of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving.

    Thanks for sharing.

  1. Thanks for the info on the mince pies I seem to remember small pies with groundbeef peas and carrots maybe an offshoot of these in the West Indies We do have a Christmas pudding very much like a rich fruit cake
