Jane Austen’s Advent – Day 16 – Scenes from Jane’s life

Today we’re celebrating Jane Austen’s birthday by taking you on a virtual tour of some of the special places in her life, and, of course, with a massive giveaway below! We’ve shown you pictures of Jane’s special places many times before, but this time you have the chance to look around, see the surroundings, and walk down the roads Jane Austen walked using Google Streetview. You can choose any of these four locations. Start by clicking on either the picture or the link below it, and then you can move and turn around by clicking and dragging your mouse (or using left and right arrows) anywhere in the image. Happy travels!

Virtual Tour of Jane’s Life

Chawton Cottage (The Jane Austen House Museum)
Jane Austen’s home for the last and most prolific years of her life, July 1809 until May 1817.

4 Sydney Place, Bath – Jane’s first home in Bath, 1802-1805.

Steventon Church (St. Nicholas Church, Steventon)
Jane’s father, George Austen, was rector here. Jane was born in the rectory (now gone) just down the hill and attended this church until 1801.

Jane Austen’s grave in Winchester Cathedral

Do you enjoy these virtual tours? Please let us know so we can plan better for the future!

What a great post. I really enjoyed the tours. I live in the UK so won’t enter the giveaway. The last two e-books I won Amazon.com wouldn’t deliver saying they weren’t available here. Obviously a changed policy as I have had them previously. I don’t have audio books either.
Luckily I have most of the books anyway so not to worry.
I’m So looking forward to the rest of these fabulous posts.

I have toured the grave site when we took a 2 week vacation to Great Britain and Ireland in Spring of 2004. Hard to take in all the history there much less all the famous people buried there. I do like the virtual tours, knowing I will not get there myself. Thank you for sharing. Thank you, Jane, for your sharing of your talents also.

    1. I came up with the idea of virtual tours because I use StreetView all the time as a research tool. There are so many places and details that I could only have seen by going there that I can now see on my computer. It’s not the same as being there, but it’s awfully nice!

I just started joining this group, thank you for the fun activities, upcoming events/books, for offering the discounted books and for sharing these places (I couldn’t) viist.

  3. I so enjoyed seeing the places where Jane lived–and even was buried. So interesting! I like the looks of the pub across the street from her home on Winchester Road! 😉

I suppose that it becomes second nature in Britain to just go about daily life surrounded by places of literary and historical significance! Living in San Diego, we have very little that is truly “old” here; a few Victorian homes date back to the 1880s, but that’s about it. The San Diego Mission, the first church in California, was founded in 1769, and it’s still a functioning church; two of my friends are in the choir. But just living among places of historical and literary significance–what riches!!!

Thank you for this lovely post, Abigail!! And yes, I’m in the US.

Wishing everyone a lovely Advent and a joyous Christmastide!

Great links to Jane’s places. It’s really beautiful how even a static image viewed thousands of miles away from the comfort of my computer still gives me a touch of that wonder and thrill one experiences when actually being in an historical place. I felt a bit of Austen over my shoulder as I looked at these images and it made me smile. So thank you!

  5. These are lovely 360 degree views of wonderful places, which I’ve had the privilege of visiting; I hope those who haven’t, will make it there someday! I’d love to see the inside of her home in Sydney Place next time around, if you can get that; that’s not open to the public, I think, but there must be photos somewhere. You also might want to do inside views of the museum, Chawton House, and the Steventon Church, all of which are lovely.
I’m international, and can receive ebooks (since my amazon account is in the US); I can also receive regular books at my son’s address in the US and will get them eventually. Blessings for a lovely Christmas and Advent to you all!
I don’t know if it’s appropriate to say this here, but I just posted about Austen’s Advent, as it would have been happening in her church, on my blog at brendascox.wordpress.com –if it’s not appropriate to say that here, just remove it, please, moderator. I’m glad for your Advent celebration at this site!
